The AT&T Williams team would see their drivers finish in fifth and tenth in the opening Friday parctice session for the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix. Rubens Barrichello would finish ahead of team-mate Nico Hulkenberg. This would be a positive start with both Williams cars in the top ten but the worrying thing for all the teams, not just Williams, was the pace of the Red Bull cars.

 Hungarian GP Friday 1st Practice

After a frustrating German Grand Prix the previous weekend the AT&T Williams team would move to Hungary for the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix. The team would bring further updates for the FW32 while Bridgestone would bring the medium and super soft compounds this weekend. The start of the opening Friday practice would see Di Resta, replacing Liuzzi at Force India, followed by Sutil, Yamamoto, and Buemi would take to the track for their installation laps. Williams driver Nico Hulkenberg would also come out and pit after one lap. More drivers would take to the track including the second Williams of Rubens Barrichello. The only drivers yet to come out were Hamilton and Kovalainen. For Felipe Massa this would see him return to the circuit where last year he had the terrible accident that nearly ended his career.

HulkenbergRubens would complete a double installation lap prior to pitting. With ten minutes of the session run we still had yet to see either Hamilton or Kovalainen take to the track. Kovalainen would finally come out for his lap. The first driver to return to the track was Rosberg followed by Nico. Rosberg would pit after having complete six installation laps without setting a time, while Hamilton and Schumacher left the pits. Massa was also out on the circuit as shortly after Schumacher would also pit. Nico had completed four laps without setting a time. Massa would set the first time with a 1m:38.521. Sutil was next back out and would quickly set a time of 1m:26.143 while Nico would pit having not set a time. Massa would pit leaving just Sutil out on the track.

But Nico would quickly return to the track joined by Yamamoto, again taking over the HRT drive from Chandhok. Sutil would pit as Button took to the track. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: "This morning we are a little bit limited because we only have one set of the hard tyres and you have to be a bit careful with as the circuit is bit dusty." Senna was next out while Nico would pit again. Yamamoto would set a time of 1m:32.583 to go second, but some 6.4 seconds off Sutil's time. Nico would again return to the track while Yamamoto improved with a 1m:30.253. Senna was third with a 1m:31.649. Alguersuari and Schumacher would take to the track while Nico continued to complete several pitlane length and time loss tests in his Williams, with his car running a sensor package of its right hand side. Senna would lower his time with a 1m:29.210 while Yamamoto would set a 1m:30.049.

Nico would again pit having completed nine laps without setting a time. Alguersuari was now second with a 1m:28.802 as Petrov and Webber came out for their next runs, while Schumacher had pitted. With just under an hour remaining Webber would set his first time going fastest with a 1m:24.856. Alguersuari had improved his time with a 1m:26.439 and on his next lap would set a 1m:24.962 to move into second. Senna was fourth behind Sutil while the next car to come out was that of De la Rosa. Webber would also improve on his next lap and lowers his time to 1m:23.396. Vettel and Kobayashi would also take to the track and on his first lap Vettel would set a 1m:23.317 while Webber had improved his time again with a 1m:22.990 to remain fastest. Petrov was seventh with a 1m:32.812 while De la Rosa jumped up to fourth with a time of 1m:25.091. On his next lap Petrov was up to fifth followed by Sutil and Kobayashi.

Webber would again lower his time with a 1m:22.060, while De la Rosa moved into third, 1m:24.320. Buemi and Rosberg were also now out on the track while both Red Bull cars had improved with Webber setting a 1m:21.710 while Vettel set a 1m:22.133. They remained first and second with De la Rosa in third. More drivers started to come out including Rubens. Alonso, Kubica, Glock, and Button. Rosberg was now in sixth with a 1m:25.721. Webber would pit while Buemi was up to eighth, 1m:26.004. Schumacher's first lap would see him in third, 1m:23.617, while Petrov would move up to fourth, 1m:23.845. Nico was still in his pit, most likely as the Williams team collected the data from his car. Rubens would set a time which would see him twelfth, 1m:26.592, while De la Rosa moved back into third, 1m:23.212.

Rosberg was now fourth from Schumacher, Petrov, Alguersuari, Alonso, Rubens, and Buemi in tenth. Rubens had improved his position with a time of 1m:24.163. Nico was now out on the track with forty five minutes left in the session. Rosberg was now in third, 1m:22.921, while Kubica was up to fifth. Vettel was on a quick lap seeing him go fastest with a 1m:21.275, to be 0.435 ahead of Webber. Hamilton was now out on the track as Schumacher took third from Rosberg, 1m:22.792. Nico had yet to set a time while Rubens would move up to seventh with a 1m:23.460. He would be pushed down the order as Kubica moved up to third and Alonso fifth. Rubens was now tenth. Vettel would pit with the order being Vettel from Webber, Kubica, Schumacher, Alonso, Rosberg, De la Rosa, Kobayashi, Massa, and Rubens. Nico's first time would see him in fifteenth but he would improve to be in twelfth with a 1m:23.718.

On his next lap Rubens would improve to now be third with a 1m:22.601, but this would be short lived as Kubica moved ahead of him with a 1m:22.228. Forty minutes remaining as the track had cleared as drivers returned to their pits to assess their first runs. Rubens would pit while Nico was on a better lap and would move up to eighth with a time of 1m:23.030. Webber would return to the circuit while Nico would pit. Of the top ten only Webber was out on the track. The Lotus cars of Trulli and Kovalainen were in sixteenth and seventeenth. Di Resta and Button had yet to set a time while Kovalainen would move ahead of Trulli. There were only four cars on the track with thirty five minutes remaining. Webber was on a quick lap and would move ahead of Vettel with a 1m:21.177. Trulli had again moved ahead of Kovalainen but they remained in sixteenth and seventeenth.

Vettel would join Webber as Webber improved with a 1m:21.106 while Vettel's time was a 1m:21.275. Sutil was now down in fifteenth, 1m:23.928, while Button took to the track. Rubens would also come out as Sutil set a 1m:23.003 to be in eighth. Rubens was still in fourth as Nico ninth. Button was up to seventeenth, 1m:24.451, to be one place behind Hamilton. Webber would pit while more drivers came out as Button moved up to fourth, 1m:22.444, seeing Rubens in fifth. Nico was now tenth while Vettel had made a small improvement with a 1m:21.216, but remained second. Rubens would pit while Petrov would spin his car at the final corner. He would continue after doing a risky move in backing his car across the racing line. Nico was back out while Vettel had moved ahead of Webber with a 1m:20.976. Vettel and Button would pit while team-mate Hamilton was down in eighteenth.

Rosberg would improve to move into sixth, 1m:22.789, to be ahead of Schumacher, Alonso, Sutil and Massa in tenth. Rubens continued to put in a longer run while Nico would find some time in his first sector and would finish his lap moving up to ninth, 1m:22.966. Fifteen minutes remaining and the Red Bull cars were still well ahead of the rest of the field. Third placed Kubica was 1.252 seconds behind Vettel. Rubens would finally pit having completed twenty laps while Nico had complete d twenty two laps. Kubica would improve slightly with a 1m:22.072, but was still 1.096 behind the quickest time. Nico had also pitted. De la Rosa was now up to sixth with a 1m:22.764 seeing Nico drop to tenth.

Webber was back out on the track joined shortly after by team-mate Vettel. Ten minutes remaining and of the top ten we only had the two Red Bull's out on the track. Next to come out were the two Mercedes cars. We also had both McLaren cars take to the track while Di Resta was up to fourteenth, 1m:23.601. More drivers took to the track as the final seven minutes counted down. Rubens would come back out while Nico remained in the pits. Several drivers were able to set personal bests for the first sector but were not able to continued this pace across the whole lap. With three minutes remaining Kubica, Nico and Di Grassi were still in their pits. Nico would come back out with just minutes to spare joined by Kubica.

We now had Sutil and Trulli in their pits as the session came to an end with no real change to the order. Vettel was still fastest from Webber, Kubica, Button, Rubens, De la Rosa, Alonso, Rosberg, Schumacher, and Nico in tenth. Rubens and Nico would fail to improve on their times but the session would again see the Williams team with both cars in the top ten in what was a positive start for the Williams team for the weekend. But the worrying thing for all the teams not just Williams was the pace of the Red Bull cars.
