The second day of testing for the AT&T Williams team at Jerez would again see the team having to contend with technical issues with the FW33 and later in the day Pastor Maldonado would crash heavily ending his day and leaving a very damaged FW33. But at least the team did complete thirty seven laps in the day.

JEREZ TEST DAY
TWO
FRIDAY 11 FEBRUARY, 2011
Driver Pastor Maldonado
Chassis / engine FW33-01 / CA320
Location Jerez de la Frontera 4.428km
Objectives Setup work and long runs
Weather Dry and sunny all day
Ambient & track temps 20șC / 25șC
On the second
day of the AT&T Williams teams Jerez test Pastor Maldonado would continue
behind the wheel and would take to the track to complete his installation
lap. His first runs would see him set a 1m:24.227 but he would improve with
a 1m:22.887. This was a good start from Pastor after the difficulties he had
on the first day of testing.
Pastor would pit after completing a six-lap run which saw his times mostly
between 1m22.5s and 1m23.0s. In his first forty five minutes of running
Pastor would be third having completed nine laps. At this time Webber was
fastest with a 1m:21.613. Pastor would drop to fourth with a 1m:22.591.
Pastor would return to the track for a four-lap run, finishing some way off
his earlier pace with his time in the mid 1m25s. Pastor would drop to
seventh. He would return to his pit having dropped to eighth after
completing thirty one laps. Fastest was Schumacher with a 1m:20.352 followed
by Massa and Webber. By Midday Alguersuari had move dup the order to be
third with a 1m:21.506s.
By 1:30PM Pastor was still in his pit. It was later confirmed that the team
had a KERS battery warning requiring the team to do a full battery strip to
check that the system was all OK. Pastor would return after some four hours
but it would all go wrong with Pastor having a big crash at Turn four
hitting the wall damaging his front wing, rear wing, and left suspension.
The car had broken to the right and went in front end first. His car was
looking very second hand as Pastor got out of his car moving behind the
barriers. That would be the end of Pastor's day.
Now it would be
down to the Williams mechanics to repair the FW33 in preparation for the
third day of testing.
Sam Michael,
Technical Director: Today started well, then late morning we had a warning
message on the KERS battery. That required us to strip the battery to check
if there was a problem or if we just had a sensor error - fortunately it was
the latter. It cost us 3œ hours though. Despite that, we made some really
useful progress understanding the car's aero characteristics with the setup
changes we ran in the morning. We started this afternoon with a long run but
went off at T4, the high speed left hander.
Pastor
Maldonado: Yesterday we were aero testing so werent focusing too much on
out right lap times. This morning we covered good mileage testing different
things on the car. After a bit of time in the garage so the team could check
the KERS, I went back out later this afternoon. We were just starting a race
simulation when a couple of laps in I lost the car at T4 which put me out
for the rest of the day.
AT&T Williams
will be back on track tomorrow, Saturday 12 February, with Rubens
Barrichello driving for the third day of the test.
