Pastor Maldonado

The final practice session for the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix would see both AT&T Williams F1 drivers finish outside the top ten. Pastor Maldonado would reverse the trend set in the earlier sessions by finishing this time ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello. Pastor was 11th and Rubens 16th. Not the result the team would have been looking for.

Saturday practice would see if the AT&T Williams team had made any progress after their Friday results. Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado would finish Friday in tenth and twelfth so would they be able to see both cars in the top ten in the lead up to qualifying. The hour long session would commence with a rush of drivers coming out, lead by Glock. For the Williams team Pastor would take to the track first followed shortly after by Rubens. Just as quickly the drivers would return to their pits. The first time of the session was set by Rosberg with a 1m:16.977. For Webber his session was affected by a KERS battery problem with his car pulled apart as the mechanics tried to fix the problem.

Rosberg had improved with a 1m:15.034 while team-mate Schumacher was second with a time of 1m:22.535. Rosberg had pitted while Kobayashi moved into second with a time of 1m:21.106. Schumacher had improved with a 1m:21.137. Kobayashi was still second but had set a 1m:18.674 as Kovalainen moved into third from Karthikeyan, Schumacher, and Liuzzi in sixth. But drivers would start to go quicker with Heidfeld moving into second with a 1m:16.419. Button was fourth but this would become fifth as Petrov moved into second with a 1m:16.019. But Button would take second with a 1m:15.208. Pastor was down in sixth with a1m:16.880. Rubens was now in eleventh with a time of 1m:19.329. Rosberg was still fastest from Button, Petrov, Heidfeld, Kobayashi, Pastor, Massa, Alguersuari, and Rubens now in tenth with a time of 1m:17.181.

Vettel would move to be near the top of the times with a 1m:15.304 to be third. Button would go fastest with a time of 1m:14.942. Alonso was now fourth and Massa fifth. Pastor had dropped to seventh and Rubens eleventh as Button pitted. Rosberg was out on the track this time on the option tyre. He would set a 1m:14.180 to go fastest. But Vettel would move ahead with a 1m:14.162 to take the top spot. Massa would move ahead of Alonso to now be in third. Alonso was now fourth from Button, Heidfeld, Petrov, Pastor, Rubens, and Kobayashi in tenth. Rubens had set an improved time of 1m:16.443. Hamilton was now ninth splitting the Williams pair. Rosberg would put in another quick lap with a 1m:13.919 to again be fastest.

Hamilton would improve to be sixth, 1m:15.174, while Buemi would move into ninth. Pastor and Rubens were now in tenth and eleventh. With thirty minutes remaining the track had become fairly quite with only a handful of drivers on the track. Alonso was back in third with a 1m:14.319. Webber had still yet to come out while Hamilton would find time to now be fourth, 1m:14.795. Di Resta was now eighth, 1m:15.942. Sutil would move up to twelfth as Rubens returned to the track. Rubens was currently in thirteenth and Pastor eleventh. More drivers were returning to the track including Rosberg, Heidfeld, Petrov, Sutil, Rubens, Trulli, and Kovalainen. Sutil was now in tenth, 1m:16.055, as we now had both Button and Vettel return to the track.

Sutil would again improve moving up to eighth, 1m:15.865. Pastor had also returned to the track as both Force India cars pitted. Schumacher would jump up to seventh, 1m:15.327. Pastor was now thirteenth and Rubens fifteenth. Rubens had pitted after running wide at Turn eight. Rubens had been on the softer tyre while Pastor moved up to twelfth with a 1m:16.062. On the option tyre Alonso would set a 1m:14.319 but remained in third. Pastor would pit as Massa moved into third, 1m:14.078. But Alonso was on a quicker lap setting a 1m:13.919 to set the same time as Rosberg to be second. Vettel was now third and in the pits. Massa was now fourth from Hamilton and Button. Massa would find time to be third with a 1m:13.956. Rubens was back out on the track with twelve minutes remaining.

It was looking more and more likely that Webber would not come out as Rubens, on the super soft tyre, would fail to improve his time. Alonso would go fastest with a 1m:13.701, after having put in around seven laps on the super soft tyre. Alonso would pit as Rubens looked to improve on his fifteenth. But he would abort his lap and return to the pits. Pastor was back out on the track with seven minutes remaining. Di Resta was now in eighth, 1m:15.653, as the track became very busy with the drivers looking to complete practice qualifying runs. Rubens would quickly return to the track as Schumacher moved up to fifth, 1m:14.488. Everyone except Webber was now out on the track, with four minutes left in the session.

Massa would pit as Vettel was on a quick lap setting a new fastest time with a 1m:13.381. Button was up to fifth, 1m:14.335, as Pastor continued on an improved lap. Pastor would move up to tenth, 1m:15.312, but this would become eleventh as Sutil moved into ninth. With the end of the session we would have the Sauber of de la Rosa parked across the track after hitting the wall and spinning back across the track. De la Rosa would get out of the car with this crash not having any impact on the session. Vettel would remain fastest from Alonso, Rosberg, Massa, Button, Hamilton, Schumacher, Petrov, Sutil, and Di Resta in tenth. For Williams Pastor would finish in eleventh and Rubens sixteenth. Not the result the team would be looking for prior to qualifying.
