After the second FRiday practice session the AT&T Williams F1 team would see drivers Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado finish in 15th and 17th. The team continued with their update evaluation. But there was still a long way to go in terms of getting additional performance from the FW33. Both Rubens and Pastor continued to be several seconds off the pace. It would all come down to how they would fare come Saturday practice and qualifying.

With the conditions remaining dry in the lead up to the second Friday practice session the AT&T Williams F1 team would be looking to further evaluate the updates that they had brought to Germany. With the start of the session it would be Pastor Maldonado who would take to the track first for the AT&T Williams F1 team. Team-mate Rubens Barrichello would also come out shortly after. The first time would be set by Perez with a lap of 1m:42.634, but quickly other drivers would go faster with Alguersuari, 1m:36.498, and Kovalainen going faster. Pastor's first time was a 1m:45.249 to see him ninth. The track was very busy with only a handful of cars in the pits.

Rubens had pitted after one lap while Pastor would improve to be third, 1m:38.227, but he would drop down to fifth as other drivers went faster. Alonso was now fastest with a 1m:32.990, while Rubens had returned to the track. Alguersuari was second from Kobayashi, Perez, and Rosberg. But Hamilton and Vettel would move into second and third, while Heidfeld was now fourth. Pastor had dropped to ninth while Rubens had yet to set
a time. Ricciardo would pull of the track with his engine smoking. Pastor was now in eleventh while Rubens first time was a 1m:42.963 to see him twentieth. For the Williams team this session would see further aero comparisons as well as longer runs.

Vettel was now second with a 1m:33.951 while Sutil was up to fifth. This would become sixth as Webber moved up to second with a 1m:33.642. Massa was up to fourth while for the Williams team Pastor had pitted while Rubens was twenty second. Rubens would be out on the prime tyre and would improve his time with a 1m:37.728 to be thirteenth. Di Resta was now in ninth, 1m:36.514, while at the front Alonso, Webber, and Vettel had all pitted. Rubens would pit with eighteen minutes of the session completed. Kobayashi would jump up to
sixth, 1m:35.009, as we watched Sutil spin harmlessly at the chicane. Perez would also improve to be eighth, 1m:35.370, running on the softer tyre as Alonso returned to the track. Pastor would return to the track, running on the prime tyre. Rubens and Pastor were now fourteenth and fifteenth with an hour and five minutes remaining.

Petrov was now in fifth, 1m:34.265, running on the softer tyre followed by Hamilton and Perez. Pastor would move ahead of Rubens, 1m:37.653, with Pastor now fifteenth and Rubens sixteenth. Rubens had also left the pits as Petrov improved to be fourth, 1m:33.956. Second placed Webber was also back out joined by Vettel. Massa was back out on Pirelli's development soft tyre. Rubens would improve his time with a 1m:37.386, seeing him now fifteenth. Pastor had dropped to seventeenth. Massa was on a quick lap setting a 1m:32.772 to be fastest. Rubens had pitted again while Massa continued to push going even faster with a 1m:32.466. Rubens was now sixteenth and Pastor seventeenth. Pastor would return to the pits after a big lockup of the left front tyre at the final chicane. This would see Pastor take to the grass and return to the pits, joining Massa who had also pitted.

Fifty minutes of the session remaining and Massa was fastest from Alonso, Webber, Vettel, Petrov, Hamilton, Kobayashi, Perez, Heidfeld, and Sutil in tenth. Rubens would come back out followed by Alonso who was out on the option tyre. Alguersuari would move up to seventh, 1m:34.487. Pastor had joined Rubens out on the track. Rubens would have an off running across the grass but he was able to continue around to the pits. Rubens was
on the prime tyre while Pastor was on the option tyre. Pastor was on an improved lap finishing with a 1m:35.002 to now be tenth. At the front Alonso had moved ahead of team-mate Massa to be fastest, 1m:31.879. Hamilton would also improve, on the option tyre, moving up to third with a 1m:32.724. Rubens was now seventeenth and still in his pit.

Massa would set a 1m:32.354 while Alonso would go faster in sector one but would take to the gravel at the Turn seven hairpin. He would make his way out as Schumacher moved up to third, 1m:32.411, running on the option tyre. Pastor had pitted while Rubens was back out with fifty two minutes of the session completed. On the softer tyre it was now Webber's turn to go fastest with a lap of 1m:31.770. Di Resta was now sixth, 1m:33.299, also on the soft tyre. Team-mate Sutil would take this spot with a 1m:33.211 to see the Force India cars sixth and seventh. Rubens was now in thirteenth, 1m:34.989, while Pastor had dropped to fourteenth. Webber continued to show pace going faster in the final sector. Rosberg would also find time on the softer tyre moving up to fifth, 1m:32.557. Vettel was currently in tenth.

Vettel was out on the softer tyre as Heidfeld moved up to eleventh, 1m:33.905. Vettel's first lap on the softer tyre would not see him improve but he kept on it finishing his next lap with a 1m:32.084 to now be third. He had set the fastest time in the final sector. Rosberg would have a big moment taking a high-speed run across the gravel at the Schumacher S. He would return to the track without any damage and was able to continue. Button was down in seventeenth but like others would be out on the soft tyre and would improve to be ninth, 1m:33.225. Rubens and Pastor were now in fourteenth and seventeenth. Webber had improved his quickest time with a 1m:31.711 prior to pitting. Rubens was now back out with twenty three minutes remaining. Alonso was also out on the track joined a few minutes later by Webber.

Button would pit while Hamilton came back out. Pastor would also return to the track seeing the track now fairly busy with twenty minutes left in the session. Rubens would complete a pit-lane run through test as we also saw Massa back out. With fifteen minutes remaining Webber was fastest from Alonso, Vettel, Massa, Schumacher, Rosberg, Hamilton, Petrov, Sutil, and Button now in tenth. It was reported that Button had a problem with his car relating to a new exhaust system that would not see him come back out. Both Rubens and Pastor were circulating around the track with both drivers having completed over twenty five laps. There were now only four drivers in the pits, two of them with car problems. Vettel was back out on the softer tyre running a longer un evaluation of these tyres. The times were in the 1m:37s as they carried out their evaluations.

Alonso would pit briefly taking on the prime tyre while Heidfeld was up to ninth, 1m:33.098. Rubens and Pastor had now both completed over thirty laps with five minutes remaining. The final minutes would count down with Rubens and Pastor still in fourteenth and seventeenth. The session would come to an end with no change in the order. For the Williams team Rubens and Pastor would remain in fourteenth and seventeenth. It was very much a session that saw the team continue with their update evaluation. But there is still a long way to go in terms of getting additional performance from the FW33. Both Rubens and Pastor continued to be several seconds off the pace but there was over half a second separating the pair. It would all come down to how they would fare come Saturday practice as to whether they have any prospect of achieving a good result in qualifying.
