Pastor on the grid

The results of the 2011 German Grand Prix  for the AT&T Williams F1 team would see one car retire while the other would finish down in a disappointing fourteenth. Pastor Maldonado would make it to the finish while Rubens Barrichello would retire in his pit. Despite the efforts of the Williams team both Rubens and Pastor still lacked the pace that would see them in a position to score points regularly.

After qualifying for the 2011 German Grand Prix it was announced that Buemi had been sent to the rear of the grid for a fuel irregularity. This would not affect the start positions for the AT&T Williams F1 drivers as Buemi had qualified in sixteenth. Pastor Maldonado and Rubens Barrichello would start from thirteenth and fourteenth. The weather had seen rain prior to the start with still very cold conditions. The rain was expected to return at some stage during the race leading to very changeable conditions. As the drivers went out onto the grid the track was drying but light rain would start to fall. Rubens would remain in his car
with an umbrella over him. The big question was what tyres to start the race on as the rain continued to fall.

For the start of the race the DRS would be disabled given the wet conditions. Slick tyres would be the choice of the drivers as they moved off on their parade lap for the sixty lap race. If the rain got worse on this lap we may see cars take to the pit lane for a change of tyres. They would form up and with the start of the race we would see Hamilton taking the lead from Webber and Alonso going into Turn one. Vettel was fourth from Rosberg, Massa, Sutil, and Petrov. Di Resta would spin at Turn three as Vettel tried to pass Alonso. He would not make the pass stick and by the end of lap one Hamilton was leading by 1.2 seconds. Rubens had made up several places running in eleventh while Pastor was in thirteenth.

Heidfeld had lost a lot of places dropping to the rear of the field joining Di Resta. Lap two and Alonso would make a mistake allowing Vettel to pass him. The DRS was now enabled while Button was now in tenth. Lap three and Hamilton was leading by 1.9 seconds from Webber, Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg, and Massa. Lap four and a new fastest lap from Webber, 1m:38.189, to close by one tenth on Hamilton. Rubens had dropped to twelfth with Pastor one place behind. Alonso was having problems running wide at Turn three. Heidfeld was now up to eighteenth while at the front Webber had closed in onto Hamilton. Massa was told by his engineer to get past Rosberg or it will ruin his race.

Lap six and Webber was now 1.0 seconds behind Hamilton while Vettel was now 2.0 seconds behind his team-mate. Alonso was attacking Alonso going down into Turn one with Rosberg now five seconds behind the Ferrari. Rubens was dropping away from Kobayashi with Pastor closing into Rubens. Lap eight and Alonso would pass Vettel going into Turn one to take third. Alonso was now 2.7 seconds behind Webber as on lap nine Perez
would pit from nineteenth after an off-track moment. Lap nine and Alonso would set a 1m:37.847 as he closed in onto Webber. Rubens was now 3.8 seconds behind Kobayashi while for Vettel his race would go wrong when he ran off the track after a spin at Turn ten after putting his right tyres onto the white line, seeing Rosberg and Massa close right up to him. Lap eleven and Buemi would pit from seventeenth.

Massa would finally pass Rosberg at Turn one taking fifth place. Hamilton was now leading by just 0.1 seconds after lap twelve. Buemi's pit stop was as a result of making contact with Heidfeld going into the final chicane. Heidfeld's car was launched into the air ending up in the gravel ending his race. Lap thirteen and Hamilton was leading by 0.5 seconds from Webber, Alonso, Vettel, Massa, Rosberg, Sutil, Schumacher, Petrov, and Button. Hamilton would make a mistake going into the final corner allowing Webber to pass Hamilton but the McLaren driver would get back past Webber as they went down the straight. Lap fifteen and
Webber and Rosberg would both pit seeing Alonso move up to second. Webber would come back out behind Sutil but he would get past to be fifth.

Schumacher and Pastor would pit on lap sixteen. Hamilton and Alonso would both pit one lap later on lap seventeen. They would come back out with Massa and Webber coming down the straight. On lap sixteen Webber was fastest with a lap of 1m:37.003. Vettel had also pitted joined by Rubens from fourteenth. Button was attacking Petrov as on lap eighteen Massa would pit while in the pits Rubens had been stopped for a considerable time. He would be shown as retired in his pit. It was confirmed that it was an oil leak
problem. With Massa pitting Webber was back in front with Hamilton second and Alonso third. Alonso was attacking Hamilton going into Turn one. Massa was down in eighth with Vettel behind him. This was effectively fifth place with several cars in front of them yet to pit.

Webber and Hamilton would trade fastest laps but at the end of lap twenty Webber was leading by 1.1 seconds. Kobayashi would pit from eleventh on lap twenty one. A 1m:36.551 from Webber to see his lead now 1.3 seconds. Sutil was in fourth from Button, Massa, Petrov, Vettel, Rosberg, and Schumacher in tenth. For Williams Pastor was in thirteenth 1.4 seconds behind Di Resta. Sutil would finally pit on lap twenty three while at the end of the lap Webber would set a new fastest lap with a 1m:36.380. Petrov would pit on lap
twenty four joined by Alguersuari and Di Resta. Pastor was now right behind Kobayashi as on lap twenty five Button would pit from fifth returning in eighth. Schumacher would pit after running wide and putting his wheels on the white line. He was still ninth while Pastor was now in eleventh.

Lap twenty six and Webber was leading by 1.3 seconds over Hamilton. Alonso was 1.4 seconds behind Hamilton with Massa 22.7 seconds behind his team-mate. Vettel was now fifth from Rosberg, Sutil, Button, Schumacher, and Kobayashi in tenth. Vettel's engineer would come on his radio saying that there may be a problem with the rear brakes. At the front Hamilton and Alonso would start to find a few tenths with Hamilton now 0.8
behind Webber after lap twenty nine. Alonso was 0.7 seconds behind Hamilton. Lap thirty one Webber would pit again seeing Hamilton take the lead. Pastor was now 3.4 seconds behind Kobayashi as Hamilton would also pit one lap later matching Webber. Hamilton was able to come out just in front of Webber going into the first corner. Webber would try to get back past but Hamilton would not having anything to do with it seeing Webber
running wide at Turn two. Alonso was now leading but he would also pit on lap thirty three.

Perez was closing in onto Pastor while at the front Alonso would come out in front of Hamilton but Hamilton would get past his going around the outside at Turn two. Alonso was now second and Webber third. Hamilton was now 2.4 seconds ahead of Alonso after lap thirty four. The next lap and the lead was out to 2.7 seconds with Webber losing time to Alonso, the gap now 2.5 seconds after a mistake from Webber at the final chicane.
Button would pit from eighth on lap thirty six retiring in his pit with a hydraulic problem. Pastor would make his second stop on the same lap. Rosberg would pit on lap thirty seven while team-mate Schumacher would pit the next lap. Lap forty and Hamilton was now leading by 2.8 seconds from Alonso with Webber 4.6 seconds behind the Ferrari.

Lap forty one and Vettel would pit from fifth. Rosberg would pass Kobayashi going into Turn one seeing Rosberg seventh. Massa would pit from fourth on lap forty two coming out just in front of Vettel. Pastor was now one lap down and 15.6 seconds behind thirteenth place Di Resta. Perez would pit from eleventh on lap forty three as Vettel would take to the escape road going into the final chicane. Vettel would continue still behind Massa. Lap forty five and Hamilton's lead was now 3.1 seconds over Alonso. Webber was 5.1 seconds behind the Ferrari. Massa was fourth from Vettel, Sutil, Rosberg, Kobayashi, Petrov, and Schumacher
in tenth. Now the question was as to when the teams would bring their cars in for their final stop to take on the medium tyre given that this tyre could be a second per lap slower. Lap forty eight and Petrov would pit from tenth taking on the medium tyre.

Barrichello

Vettel would continue to chase Massa as on lap forty nine Sutil would pit from sixth. Kobayashi would also come in from ninth as Hamilton still led from Alonso, Webber, Massa and Vettel as they started the final ten laps of the race. The gap between the top three was remaining fairly constant as on lap fifty two Hamilton would pit from the lead taking on the harder tyres. Alonso was now leading from Webber while Di Resta would pit from ninth on lap fifty three. Alonso would pit on lap fifty four taking on the hard tyre returning back
out behind Hamilton. Rosberg would pit from sixth also taking on his medium tyre. Webber was now leading by 12.7 seconds over Hamilton but Hamilton was finding some pace on the harder tyre. Webber was also having to find his way past traffic and it was now working out for him. Webber would finally pit on lap fifty seven seeing Hamilton take over the lead. Alonso was back in second with Webber third.

Massa was still fourth from Vettel, Sutil, and Schumacher. Schumacher would pit on lap fifty eight returning in eighth. Pastor was still in a lonely fourteenth as the race drew to a close. Hamilton would start his final lap as we would see both Massa and Vettel pit taking on their medium tyres for just one lap. Vettel would come back out in front of Massa after a quick stop. Hamilton would finish his lap taking victory in the 2011 German Grand Prix. Alonso was second with Webber third. Vettel would finish in fourth from Massa, Sutil, Rosberg, Schumacher, Kobayashi, and Petrov in tenth. For the Williams team they would see one car retire while the other was down in a disappointing fourteenth. Despite the efforts of the Williams team both Rubens and Pastor still lacked the pace that would see them in a position to score points regularly.
