Hungarian GP : Williams drivers still off the pace in FP2

The second Friday practice session for the 2011 Hungarian GP both AT&T Williams F1 drivers still struggled to find pace from the FW33. Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado would finish in thirteenth and fifteenth. There was little to be seen to show that the FW33 had any pace. Now it would come down to whether they can find any improvements overnight to drag the FW33 up the times. A difficult time for all those at Williams.

Barrichello

After the opening Friday practice for the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix both Williams F1 drivers were down the times with Rubens Barrichello in fourteenth and Pastor Maldonado eighteenth. The second practice session would commence with Alguersuari first out joined by Ricciardo and both Virgin cars. More drivers started to come out including both Lotus cars, Perez, Petrov, Pastor, and Heidfeld. Rubens would come out early as the clouds grew heavier around the circuit. Alguersuari would set a 1m:27.596. Buemi was out on the super soft tyre as Trulli moved into second with a 1m:27.857 followed by Kovalainen. Perez would go fastest with a 1m:25.881 while Heidfeld was now second, 1m:26.566.

Pastor was down in eighth with lap time of 1m:31.031. Petrov was up to fifth with Glock sixth. Pastor was now eleventh and Rubens first lap was a 1m:34.528 to be thirteenth. Petrov would go fastest with a 1m:25.560 as we now had Hamilton out on the track. he was joined by Massa, Button, Vettel, Webber, and Rosberg. Pastor was now third, 1m:25.971, while Rubens would go second with a 1m:25.805. But this would become fifth as Perez went fastest, 1m:24.679, from Di Resta, Petrov, and Heidfeld. But Hamilton would move
to the top of the times with a lap of 1m:23.593. But just as quickly Massa would go fastest with a 1m:22.928, running on the prime tyre. Rubens was now seventh while Pastor was ninth, 1m:25.971. Rubens would say that he had picked up rear grip but still suffered from understeer.

Di Resta would improve his time, 1m:24.203, but remained third. Now it was Vettel's turn to be fastest setting a 1m:22.666. Massa was second from Hamilton, Button, Di Resta, Perez, Sutil, Kobayashi, Petrov, and Buemi in tenth. Rubens had dropped to twelfth and Pastor thirteenth. Button would go fastest with a lap of 1m:22.536 but was passed by Alonso with a 1m:22.297. Webber was in sixth, 1m:23.616, as Rubens and Pastor dropped down to fourteenth and fifteenth. Vettel would improve to be second, 1m:22.392, while Massa would
spin going into Turn twelve. Button would continue to lower the quickest time setting a 1m:22.091. Alonso was now second followed by Vettel, Massa, Hamilton, and Webber in sixth. Pastor would pit as Alguersuari would move up to seventh with a time of 1m:24.182.

Rosberg was out on the track but down in seventeenth. Alonso would find a few tenths to set a 1m:22.154 while on his next lap would set a 1m:22.070. Di Resta and Perez were in eighth and ninth. Rubens was back out on the track, currently in fifteenth. Pastor was now sixteenth with both drivers over 3.5 seconds off the pace. Alonso had pitted while Hamilton was back out as it was confirmed that Rubens was running with the new rear wing. Only the two Torro Rosso cars had used the super soft tyres with the rest still on the soft
prime tyre. Button was also back out on the track joined by Pastor who was running with the older rear bodywork. Rubens would set a 1m:25.303 to be fourteenth pitting shortly after. Sutil was up to tenth, 1m:24.753, while Hamilton had pitted. The top five were all back in the pits with fifty five minutes remaining.

Massa was now back out running on the super soft tyres. Alonso would join him as Massa started a quick lap, going fastest in sector one. Massa would spoil his lap running wide at Turn nine. Pastor would pit saying that he had a puncture on the left rear. Alonso was also on the super soft tyres and was on a very quick lap going fastest in the sector one ad two. He would set a personal best in the final sector to set a 1m:21.259. Button was still second with Massa third. Vettel had returned to the track while for Williams Rubens was back out on the track. With the times falling at the front Rubens had dropped to fifteenth and Pastor
sixteenth. Both drivers were now over four seconds off the pace, a huge margin. But behind the Williams pair was the cars of Mercedes with Rosberg and Schumacher in seventeenth and eighteenth. Alonso had pitted as Perez moved up to seventh with a time of 1m:23.399. Alguersuari was in eighth with forty two minutes remaining in the session.

Button and Hamilton would come back out running on the super soft tyre. Button would go fastest in sector one. He would finish with a 1m:21.322 to be just behind Alonso. Team-mate Hamilton would move to the top of the times with a 1m:21.018 while Webber would set a 1m:21.508 to be fourth. He was also on the super soft tyre as both Williams cars came back out. Pastor was out on the super soft tyre and would jump up the times from seventeenth to now be in eighth with a lap of 1m:24.181. Despite this move up the order Pastor was
still over three seconds off the pace. Rubens was also on the super soft tyre and he would set a 1m:23.679 to take eighth. Rubens was four tenths ahead of Pastor as Alonso again came out on the option tyre. Massa was also out but running on the prime tyre. Kobayashi was now seventh, 1m:23.030, with Rubens and Pastor now ninth and tenth.

Rosberg would also make good use of the option tyre to move up to sixth with a 1m:22.121. Vettel was now seventh followed by Di Resta. Di Resta had set a 1m:22.835 as Vettel was out on the option tyre. Vettel was on a quick lap but it was not the fastest. He would only set a 1m:21.549 to be fifth. Both Alonso and Massa had been running through the pit lane as the last thirty minutes of the session commenced. Schumacher would move up to eighth using the option tyre, 1m:22.440. Button would return to the track while for Williams both
cars were back in their pits. Both Ferrari's continued to circulate around the track as Webber came back out. After a time back in their pits both Williams cars would come back out with twenty minutes left in the session. Webber was on the option tyre but conducting a longer run. The drivers were out collecting data in regard to their tyres. Rubens, Pastor and Hamilton were also on the super soft tyre.

With fifteen minutes remaining the track was now very busy with Vettel also coming back out also on the super soft tyre. Alonso would pit while Rubens and Pastor had dropped to thirteenth and fifteenth. Alonso would return to the track running on the prime tyres. With ten minutes remaining Hamilton was still fastest from Alonso, Button, Webber, Vettel, Massa, Rosberg, Schumacher, Di Resta, and Sutil tenth. Massa would pit switching from the prime to the option tyre. With the drivers on longer runs there was little change in positions with only Alguersuari and D'Ambrosio in the pits. As the final minutes counted down there was a
real mix of times coming from the various drivers. Pastor would suffer one lockup of his front left wheel putting a big flat spot on it. Rubens would pit as the session came to an end.

With the end of the session the top ten would remain the same and for Williams Rubens and Pastor were still in thirteenth and fifteenth. There was little to be seen to show that the FW33 had any pace. They were again struggling to find any pace during the session. Now it would come down to whether they can find any improvements overnight to drag the FW33 up the times. A difficult time for all those at Williams.
