 Ten grid penalty for Maldonado

AT&T Williams F1 driver Pastor Maldonado will be forced to use his ninth engine of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and as a result he will suffer a ten place grid penalty.

The Williams team announced that due to the damage that his engine suffered in India because, as a result of a gearbox failure, Pastor will be unable to use that engine for the races in Abu Dhabi. The Williams team would then be forced to use a ninth engine for Pastor, and with teams limited to eight engines per season this will see the ten-place grid penalty.

Team-mate Rubens Barrichello will be using his eighth engine of the season in Abu Dhabi.

Not good news. Abu Dhabi is just a procession - probably the worst race on the calendar. Hardly worth turning up.

They will probably have double DRS zones so Alonso doesent get held up by Petrov again, it will have to go some to be as boring as the India race turned out to be.

I think Maldonado shouldn't bother to do a single qualifying lap, maybe only a couple of runs on the harder tyre. Save all the 3 sets of option tyres for the race, anyway he will start last, so...

Thank goodness we're getting sodden rid of Cosworth

I had no idea we were so marginal. There must be some of the eight left with less k's on the clock. Or is there still a degradation issue?

Edit to add: We had four DNFs at the beginning of the season. Surely we should have engine life to spare???

I had a feeling it was majorly overrevved in that gearbox fail. Oooops!

evidently it wasn't the engine that failed, it was the magnificent WSG. so all the cosworth detractors might like to post an apology.

Indeed - that one was quite obvious sad smiley

change, change, CLUNK, gearbox seems to select a good couple of gears too low, engine soars cleanly up to...ooooh...i guess about 21000rpm?!?

The advantage of WSG is when that happens, it is so small it gives the pistons a direct exit route from block to trackside...

you may just be right MHF. rumour has it that maldo will start 27th on the abu dhabi grid if he takes the ten place penalty.

the best rumour i have heard is that both barra and maldo are out and fisi and ralf are coming to take their places.
