In what would be a rain affected session the Williams F1 team would see their drivers finish fifth and thirteenth in the second practice session for the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix. Pastor Maldonado would lead team-mate Bruno Senna in a session that saw both drivers using intermediate tyres late in the session.
Monaco GP Thursday 2nd
Practice
The start of the
second Thursday practice session at Monaco would see heavy dark clouds
heading towards the circuit. There would be a rush of drivers coming out
with Bruno Senna being the first of the Williams F1 cars out on the track.
Kobayashi was first out with the soft tyre been the tyre of choice early in
the session. Pastor would take to the track as announcements were made that
rain was expected. The times would come quickly with Perez fastest with a
1m:18.800 from Kobayashi, Di Resta, Hulkenberg, Glock, Vergne, Ricciardo,
Button, Hamilton, and Raikkonen in tenth. Bruno was eleventh with a
1m:29.867 while at the front Kobayashi was now fastest with a 1m:17.504 with
Di Resta now second.
The times would change rapidly with Schumacher fastest with a 1m:17.349 but
Button would move ahead with a 1m:17.095. Hamilton was second but had
dropped to third, 1m:17.375. Pastor would improve to be ninth with a
1m:18.305. Bruno was currently thirteenth with a 1m:19.105. Alonso would
jump to the top of the times with a 1m:16.944. The only driver yet to set a
time was Kovalainen. Di Resta was now fifth from Kobayashi but we would have
Webber move up to fourth with a 1m:17.148. Schumacher was now fifth and
Hamilton sixth. Pastor would find time setting a 1m:16.820 to be second.
Bruno had pitted and was in eleventh with a 1m:17.655. Grosjean would take
second from Pastor with a 1m:16.739 while Pastor had pitted after a six lap
run.
Button would go fastest with a 1m:15.746, using the super soft tyre. Other
drivers were coming out on the softer tyre as Massa moved up to fourth,
1m:16.750. Pastor was now fifth as Pastor also come out on the super soft
tyre. Bruno was still in his pit as the rain started to fall and the track
was declared wet. As a result the track would empty quickly as the drivers
returned to their pits. Petrov would be last to come back in. The rain was
expected to last twenty minutes and twenty minutes later we would have Glock
come out on the soft tyres. He would be joined by Alonso and Raikkonen as
the drivers started to explore the changed track conditions. Pastor would
also come out but they would return with the rain continuing to fall.
Drivers would start to come out on intermediates including both Torro Rosso
cars, Kobayashi, Pic and Glock.
Both Bruno and Pastor would head out onto track for Williams. Both were on
intermediates Bruno would have a moment making a mistake at the chicane,
then heading down the escape road at the Mirabeau on his next lap. Pastor
would follow suit also taking to the escape road at Mirabeau. He was also
able to continue. We also had both Ferrari's out on the track along with Webber,
Kobayashi, Perez, Petrov, and Kovalainen. Both Williams drivers had pitted while for Red Bull Vettel had
also come out. Perez would also take to the escape road at Mirabeau but was
able to continue. As the session drew to a close the rain had started to
fall a bit heavier with the times well off those set earlier in the session.
Webber would set a 1m:34.062 on the intermediates.
Webber would improve with a 1m:31.77 while Massa would lock up at Mirabeau
seeing him having to stop and back up to continue. Both Williams drivers
were back out with seven minutes remaining. The track was now quite busy as
more drivers came out. Kovalainen would join the group of drivers running
down the escape road at Mirabeau. Except he was not able to continue as he could not reverse his car and his car was
lifted away. In certain parts of the track a dry line was starting to appear
as more cars ran on the track. As the session ended Bruno would pit. So with
the end of the session Pastor was fifth while Bruno had improved to be
thirteenth in their dry weather times.
With the possibility of rain occurring on Saturday this wet track running was of value to the teams as
they prepare for qualifying. The weather forecasts had rain falling during
qualifying. Drivers would take the opportunity to practice starts on the
grid. For Williams based on this early running they are looking quite competitive in the
lead-up to the Saturday practice and qualifying. But with variable weather
conditions the times that may be set could be very much a lottery with it
been a case of getting it right at the times when the track is at it best.
