The opening Friday practice session for the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix would see Williams F1 drivers Valtteri Bottas and Pastor Maldonado finish in ninth and eleventh. Valtteri would be replaced by regular driver Bruno Senna. The first session had seen only the medium tyre being used but in the second ninety minute session it was expected that the soft tyre would be used. The sun was again shining as practice got underway with Bruno coming out first for Williams, shortly after followed by Pastor. First to come out were the Marussia cars with Glock leading.

Glock would set a 1m:33.339 on his first lap. Pic would go faster with a 1m:32.688. Bruno would start his timed lap and would finish with a 1m:27.605 to be fastest. Kovalainen was now second as Pastor went quickest with a 1m:27.518. Ricciardo was in fourth as Rosberg went fastest with a 1m:26.689 as Bruno improved to be second, 1m:27.031. Vergne would move ahead of Bruno as Kobayashi went fastest with a 1m:25.365 and Ricciardo moved into second. Grosjean would take the quickest time with a 1m:24.110 as Button went second. Lotus team-mate Raikkonen would go fastest with a 1m:22.950 and Kobayashi again second, 1m:23.929. Pastor was now second with a 1m:24.588 and Bruno ninth with a 1m:25.070. Grosjean would pit after leaving the track damaging his front wing.

Rosberg was now fourth and Button fifth followed by Massa. Hulkenberg would move ahead of Pastor to be seventh seeing Pastor eighth. Bruno was now down in eleventh. Di Resta was now ninth and Ricciardo tenth. On his next lap
Pastor would improve to be fourth with a time of 1m:24.151. Bruno had pitted as Button moved up to second with a 1m:23.558. Vettel would go ninth quickest on his first lap, 1m:24.608. Hulkenberg would jump up to fifth with a lap time of 1m:24.116. Button would set a new fastest first sector while Hamilton was on a lap seeing him move up into third with a 1m:23.924. Alonso would move up to second, 1m:23.300, but Button would move ahead with a 1m:22.963 to be second. Raikkonen was still fastest from Button, Alonso, Massa, and Hamilton. Schumacher would move up ahead of Hamilton with a 1m:23.317. Pastor had dropped to tenth and Bruno seventeenth. Both Williams drivers were back in their pits as Vettel moved up to sixth, 1m:23.713.

Red Bull team-mate Webber was now ninth, 1m:24.093, while back at the front Alonso was fastest with a 1m:22.899. Hamilton would also improve to be fourth, 1m:22.990, as Bruno came back out after doing a first six lap run. Massa would move ahead of Alonso with a 1m:22.831. On his first lap back out Bruno would set a 1m:24.064 to be ninth. Pastor was also back out as Bruno found a few tenths with a 1m:23.875 to be eighth. Grosjean was back out running on the soft tyre. Even with the soft tyre Grosjean could only manage ninth, 1m:23.881. Still running on the medium tyre Pastor was out continuing on setup work as well as tyre evaluations. Bruno was on an improved lap setting a 1m:23.219 to be sixth. More drivers were coming out on the soft tyres including Kobayashi and Ricciardo. Bruno would pit having completed his run. Pastor continued to put in additional laps as Button came back out on the soft tyre.

The next run for Bruno would be on the soft tyres after having set some good times on the medium tyre. Pastor would pit while we would see both Ferrari's out on the track followed by Bruno. It was planned that Pastor would also take on the soft tyre for his next run. After a few laps Button would begin to go quickly going fastest in sector one. Bruno was still in sixth and Pastor thirteenth. Button would complete his lap going fastest with a 1m:22.747. Bruno would set a personal best in sector one but would lose time in the middle sector. Vettel and Webber were in eighth and ninth. Rosberg would jump up to sixth, 1m:23.164 as Pastor took to the track. On the soft tyre Pastor would set a personal best in sector one and two. Pastor would finish with a 1m:23.337 to be tenth. Vettel had moved up to sixth with a time of 1m:23.078, running on the medium tyre with Bruno now eighth. Raikkonen would improve to be second, 1m:22.770, as Alonso also found time to be fastest with a 1m:22.582.

Button was second from Raikkonen, Massa, Hamilton, Vettel, Rosberg, Bruno, Schumacher, and Grosjean in tenth. Pastor was down in eleventh as Hamilton was out on the soft tyre setting a new fastest first sector but he would back off in the final sector. Raikkonen would go fastest with a 1m:22.180 with Alonso now second. For Bruno he would move up to third with a 1m:22.659. But Massa would move ahead with a 1m:22.653. Hamilton's next lap would see him now second with a lap of 1m:22.427. Bruno had dropped to fifth with Pastor down in twelfth. Pastor was still out on the soft tyre doing a longer run as Hamilton and Massa both were on quick laps. Massa would go second with a 1m:22.417 as Hamilton went fastest with a 1m:21.995. Bruno would also improve to move back up to third with a lap time of 1m:22.253.

There were a few drops of rain after clouds had come over seeing Bruno pit along with Pastor. The track would go fairly quite as drivers returned to their pits. The rain was now falling quite heavily with Hamilton fastest from Raikkonen, Bruno, Massa, Alonso, Button, Di Resta, Vettel, Grosjean, Schumacher, Rosberg, and Pastor in twelfth. With thirty eight minutes remaining the track was now empty as the rain started to fall heavily. Vergne and Schumacher would both come back out with Vergne on the full wet and Schumacher the intermediate. Vergne would not complete the lap returning to his pit. Schumacher would continue but he would lose the rear and lock the front and would go off into the barrier at Turn eleven. He would take the front wing off went he went into the barrier. He would get out of his damaged car as the rain continued to fall. Kobayashi had also come out running on the wet tyre, followed by Glock. Vettel would also come out running on the intermediates.

Bruno had also left his pit running on the full wets. Button was going to go out but he would stop at the end of the pit lane seeing his mechanics run down to retrieve him. Bruno was told to pit with just under twenty minutes remaining. Vettel had only completed one lap prior to pitting. Both Ferrari's had also come out followed by Button. The reason for Button's return to the pits was due to the team feeling that there may have been something left on the car. Bruno was back in his pit as we had Hulkenberg also out on the track. Massa was on the full wets and Alonso the intermediates. Both Ferrari's and Button would pit with fifteen minutes left in the session. Petrov was out on the track running wide at Turn four. The track was now drying out with the intermediates proving to be the more suitable tyre. Bruno would return to the track along with Rosberg.

With nine minutes remaining the track was getting busy with Pastor also coming out. There were still a few puddles on the track one of which nearly caught Bruno out running wide at Turn eleven. He would find his way back onto the track having missed the barrier. First and second, Hamilton and Raikkonen, remained in their pits but with seven laps Raikkonen would come out. Both McLaren's remained in their pits as the session drew to a close. Vettel had come out on intermediates but would run wide at Turn six returning to his pit. Both Bruno and Pastor continued out on the track trying to get use to the conditions. The session would end with Hamilton still fastest from Raikkonen, Bruno, Massa, Alonso, Button, Di Resta, Vettel, Grosjean, and Schumacher in tenth. Pastor was down in twelfth.

A somewhat frustrating way to end the session with the Williams F1 team losing dry track time not getting any longer runs on the soft tyre. But this session had seen a strong performance from Bruno being in third. This is an encouraging change in form as it has normally been Pastor leading Bruno in the first day. Now it was down to Bruno to continue this good form come Saturday practice and qualifying.
