The second Friday practice at Suzuka would commence with Vergne again first to come out. For the Williams F1 team Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas had finished the first session in tenth and eighteenth. For the second session Bruno Senna would return replacing Valtteri. Bruno would be the first out followed shortly after by Pastor. It was reported that Rosberg's problem was engine related seeing the Mercedes team forced to make an engine change on Rosberg's car. For those out on the track hard tyres were the choice as the drivers started timed laps. Vergne would set a 1m:36.287 but he was passed by Perez with a 1m:35.374. Grosjean would go fastest with a 1m:34.514 while Bruno was currently fifth with a time of 1m:37.282. Pastor would have a moment seeing his car run over the kerb seeing his lap time a 1m:47.918.

Di Resta would have a bigger moment crashing his car into the tyre barrier at the Spoon curve with his car badly damaged. He had put his car onto the grass and dirt seeing his car spin into the barrier. This would see the session red flagged. Grosjean was still fastest from Vettel with a 1m:35.127, followed by Perez, Vergne, Ricciardo, Bruno, Petrov, Glock, Karthikeyan, Pic, De la Rosa, Kovalainen, and Pastor in thirteenth. As the Force India was craned away there was a lot of damage to the front of his car. The session would restart with just over an hour and fifteen minutes remaining. Bruno would come out early followed by a rush of drivers with both McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull cars out on the track. Pastor was still in his pit while both Mercedes cars were still being worked on, Rosberg's an engine change and Schumacher's setup changes.

Alonso would go fastest with a 1m:34.287 and Webber now third followed by Kobayashi and Button. Vettel was now seventh seeing Bruno drop to eleventh. Hamilton would also go faster moving into second with a 1m:34.398. Grosjean was now third as Massa moved into seventh with a time of 1m:34.964. Pastor was now down in nineteenth and out on the track. Vettel would also improve to be third with a time of 1m:34.481. Hulkenberg was now sixth, 1m:34.853, as Alonso went fastest in sectors one and three but did not improve his lap time. Perez was now up to tenth, 1m:34.974. Webber would move ahead of Grosjean with a 1m:34.509 to be fourth. Alonso had pitted as Hamilton improved his time with a 1m:34.304 but remained second.

Pastor had found pace seeing him move up to twelfth with a 1m:36.039. His next lap would also see him improve with a 1m:35.381 to now be eleventh. Bruno was fifteenth but his next lap would see him move up to eleventh with a time of 1m:35.379. This would see Pastor twelfth as at the front Button would go fastest with a 1m:34.150 with Webber now second, 1m:34.188. Bruno had pitted as Grosjean was on a quick lap going fastest in sector's one and two. He would finish his lap with a 1m:34.259 to be third. After their first runs drivers would start to pit leaving just a handful of drivers still out, one being Pastor. Petrov was out on the track and was the first to try the soft Pirelli tyre. Alonso and Vettel were back out with Vettel going fastest with a time of 1m:34.080. With fifty five minutes remaining Vettel was fastest from Button, Webber, Grosjean, Alonso, Hamilton, Perez, Massa, Hulkenberg, and Kobayashi in tenth.

Pastor had pitted while Bruno came back out as Vettel went faster with a 1m:33.961. More drivers were back out on the track while for Mercedes they were still working on their cars, neither of which had set a time. Kobayashi was on the soft tyre and on a quick lap. He would finish his lap with a 1m:33.983 to be second. He was 0.022 behind Vettel but Vettel's time was set on the hard tyre. Pastor was again out on the track as Button was on the soft tyre seeing him go fastest in sector one and two. Bruno and Pastor were now down in thirteenth and fourteenth. Button would complete his lap setting a 1m:33.349 to be 0.612 ahead of Vettel. Grosjean was also on the soft tyre joined by Pastor, Perez, and several other drivers. Pastor would improve to be eighth with a 1m:34.300. Grosjean would complete his lap setting a 1m:33.107 to be fastest. Bruno was now in fifteenth as Massa moved up to third, 1m:33.614.

Both Mercedes cars were now out on the track with Schumacher now fourteenth, 1m:35.201. Bruno had pitted again with forty five minutes remaining. Schumacher would improve to now be eleventh, 1m:34.610. After a quick stop Bruno would return to the track but he would pit again shortly after. Vettel was out on the soft tyre and would set a 1m:32.836 to again be quickest. Forty minutes remaining and it was Vettel fastest from Grosjean, Button, Massa, Perez, Kobayashi, Webber, Alonso, Pastor, and Hamilton tenth. Alonso was on a quicker lap going fastest in sector one running on the soft tyre. His lap would see him move into second with a 1m:33.093. Both Williams cars were back in their pits as Perez, on the soft tyre, would have a moment running wide at the Spoon curve. At this stage of practice the teams would normally be looking at the performance of the two tyre types with different fuel loads.

Hamilton was on the soft tyre going fastest in sector one and two. He would finish with a 1m:32.707. Hulkenberg would also make use of the soft tyre going third with a 1m:32.987. Webber was also on a quick lap going fastest with a 1m:32.493. Schumacher would also improve to be eighth, 1m:33.750. Pastor was now twelfth and Bruno fifteenth Bruno would leave his pit coming out on the soft tyre. The team was also testing a new front nose as Bruno set a 1m:33.604 to be eighteenth. Pastor was now thirteenth and also out on the track with just under thirty minutes remaining. Unlike Bruno he was still on the hard tyre for this run. Rosberg would set a 1m:34.254 to be thirteenth. Bruno would find time going fastest in sector three. He would set a 1m:33.499 but remained in eighth. More drivers were returning to the track including both Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari cars.

Bruno was still eighth and had pitted as Bruno continued his longer run. Button was out on the hard tyre while Hamilton was staying with the soft. With fifteen minutes of the session remaining Bruno was back out while for Mercedes their day would offer more misfortune as Schumacher would go off at the Spoon curve after putting his wheels onto the grass seeing his car spin and crash into the barrier. Like Di Resta's cars Schumacher's had suffered a lot of front end damage. Pastor had pitted with ten minutes remaining with jus a few drivers still in their pits. Many drivers were reporting blistering on their tyres. Pastor would swap to the soft tyre after his hard tyre run. Bruno continued his run on the soft tyre with six minutes remaining.

Webber was still fastest from Hamilton, Vettel, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Grosjean, Button, Bruno, Massa, and Schumacher tenth. Pastor would return to the track as the final minutes counted down. After a major problem with his KERS Raikkonen was able to get back out onto the track, running on the soft tyre. He was down in fourteenth with Pastor fifteenth. With everyone, minus Di Resta and Schumacher, back out on the track the session would come to a close with the drivers again been allowed to complete practice starts from the grid. Petrov would spin at the first corner after losing his rear wing. The rear wing had suffered a mounting point failure as Petrov got out of his car which was in the gravel at the first corner. With the end of the session Bruno would finish well ahead of team-mate Bruno with Bruno eighth and Pastor fifteenth. A reversal of the situation in Free Practice one where Pastor had led Valtteri.
