Williams
defends Bottas practice decision
The recent
announcement from the Williams F1 promoting Valtteri Bottas as one of the
teams 2013 drivers has
seen the team defend their decision that saw Valtteri take over from Bruno
Senna during Friday practice sessions at many of the 2012 Grand Prix. But
Bruno would claim that the loss of the track time was hindering his driving.
But in the light
of the switch to Valtteri for the 2013 season it seems to vindicate their
decision to give him track time in 2012. But if Bruno had more track time
would have he performed better.
In discussions with Autosport.com
Williams Chief Operations Engineer Mark Gillan put forward the view that
having Valtteri run on the Friday's was certainly beneficial to the team.
As for whether Bruno's poor form during the season may have being
contributed to by his loss of track time on Friday. Gillan replied: "It's a good question. It's one that we
will look at in depth.
"It's a balancing act. It's something that we all knew at the beginning of
the season and we did our best to mitigate Bruno missing FP1 and did our
best to learn from Valtteri.
"Each driver has different feedback. Bruno is different to Pastor, Valtteri
is very different to Bruno and Pastor, and we've learned from that a lot.
"Valtteri benefited tremendously from it. We have got a lot from the third
driver as well."
"With Valtteri being in the simulator a lot, it's important that he's had
track time so that our virtual simulation package can be pushed forward,"
Gillan added.
In further news regarding Valtteri he is backed by Antti
Aarnio-Wihuri, whose company Wirhuri is a global industry and trade
conglomerate.
Aarnio-Wihuri is quoted sa saying “I have a personal acquaintance
with Frank Williams, which played a role.
“On next year’s car we will have big ads. We are talking about substantial
sums, but not tens of millions, as has been mentioned for some of the other
[F1] drivers.
“We hope to get back the money we have invested through the advertising.”
