In what must have been a frustrating and disappointing race the Williams F1 team they would see Valtteri Bottas finish in a distant 14th in the 2013 Australian GP. Team-mate Pastor Maldonado would retire having spun at Turn one putting his car into the gravel.
Australian GP Race Review
After a
difficult qualifying where the Williams F1 team would see their drivers
finish in sixteenth and seventeenth with Valtteri Bottas ahead of team-mate
Pastor Maldonado, the team would prepare for the start of the 2013
Australian Grand Prix. The weather conditions had improved with the sun out
but it was still overcast. The Williams team was hoping to finish the race
scoring points. On pole was Vettel followed by Webber, Hamilton, Massa,
Alonso, Rosberg, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Di Resta, and Button tenth. Hulkenberg
would not start the race with fuel systems issues. The top ten drivers would
all be starting on the super soft tyre which may see drivers make early pit
stops. There would be two DRS zones for the race as the grid
emptied.
The grid would
move off with Valtteri on the super soft tyre and Pastor the medium.
Williams was splitting their strategy for this race. Also on the medium tyre
were Perez and Ricciardo. The grid would form up and the lights would go out
and it would be Vettel leading with Massa up to second. A poor start from
Webber while for Williams Valtteri was fourteenth and Pastor fifteenth.
Alonso was now third from Hamilton and Raikkonen. Valtteri had passed Verge
to now be thirteenth. Webber was in seventh behind Rosberg. Raikkonen had
passed Hamilton for fourth with Sutil on the mediums in tenth. Pastor had
dropped to seventeenth while on lap five Button would pit taking on medium
tyres. On this lap Valtteri and Pastor were now fourteenth and fifteenth. At
the front Massa was closing in onto Vettel as on lap six Webber would pit
along with Grosjean, and Gutierrez for Sauber.
Valtteri would pit on lap seven joined by Chilton for Marussia. Vettel would pit on lap eight taking on
medium tyres and a front wing adjustment. Vettel would come back out behind
Pastor who was running tenth. Lap nine and Massa would pit for mediums
joined by Di Resta. Vettel had passed Pastor while Massa came back out
behind the Williams. With the stops Sutil is up to fifth with Perez sixth,
Vergne seventh, Vettel comes through in eighth, Maldonado ninth and Massa
tenth. Alonso and Raikkonen would pit on lap ten. Pastor would take to the
grass at Turn one. Pastor would pit on lap eleven taking on another set of
medium tyres dropping to seventeenth Hamilton was now leading from Rosberg,
Sutil, Vettel, Massa, and Perez. Valtteri was now sixteenth and not looking like they would move forward from the lower order
positions. Hamilton would pit on lap fourteen while team-mate Rosberg would
pit the next lap.
Ricciardo would
make his first stop pitting from fourteenth on lap sixteen. Perez would also
pit on lap seventeen taking on super softs while at the front Sutil was now
leading but yet to stop. Vettel was second followed by Massa, Alonso,
Raikkonen, Hamilton, Rosberg, Button, Webber, and Di Resta tenth. Valtteri
and Bottas were fifteenth and sixteenth. Webber would pit again on lap
nineteen taking on medium tyres rejoining in seventeenth. He would split the two Williams drivers as Grosjean pitted
on lap twenty. Alonso would pit also taking on medium tyres, joined by
Button. Sutil would pit from the lead on lap twenty one with Vettel
following him in. Alonso would pass Sutil at Turn one as the Force India
came out of the pits. Massa was now leading from Raikkonen and Hamilton.
Vettel would pass Sutil under braking while on lap twenty four Massa would pit. Raikkonen was now leading
from Hamilton and Rosberg. Valtteri was now fifteenth and Pastor was down in
sixteenth. But Valtteri would pit on lap twenty five following Vergne in.
But Pastor his race would end when he found himself going backwards and into
the gravel. Reports had Pastor putting a wheel off onto the grass causing
his spin. Rosberg would pull off the track at Turn four to retire with a
technical issue. Valtteri was now in seventeenth but he would move up the
order as other drivers pitted to be fourteenth. There were now a few spots
of rain on the circuit as Raikkonen led from Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel,
Sutil, Massa, Di Resta, Webber, Ricciardo, and Button tenth. Alonso was now
attacking second placed Hamilton and the Ferrari would finally get past as
Hamilton dived into the pits returning in seventh.
Lap thirty seven
and Massa would pit from fourth coming back out in sixth. At the front
Alonso was leading from Sutil and Vettel. Vettel would pit on lap thirty
eight coming back out behind Hamilton. Button and Grosjean would pit from
eleventh and twelfth on lap thirty nine. Webber would also pit followed
Alonso pitting from the lead to return in third. Sutil was now leading again
from Raikkonen and Alonso, as Ricciardo retired in his pit. Valtteri had also pitted again as on lap forty
two Perez would pit. Webber would pass Di Resta for eighth as on lap forty
three Hamilton would pit coming back out in sixth. Raikkonen would move
ahead of Sutil with Alonso third but closing in onto the Force India. Webber
would pass Vergne for seventh while for Williams Valtteri was fourteenth and
one lap down. Vergne would pit on lap forty six as Alonso continued to attacking
Sutil passing him at Turn three.
Sutil would pit
on lap forty seven taking on the super soft tyres. Lap fifty and Raikkonen
was leading by 7.6 seconds from Alonso, Vettel, Massa, Sutil, Hamilton,
Webber, Di Resta, Button, and Grosjean in tenth. Hamilton would pass Sutil
as the Force India struggled on its super soft tyres. lap fifty three and
Raikkonen continued to lead Alonso by 6.7 seconds with Vettel third.
Valtteri was still fourteenth as the race drew to a close. On lap fifty six Raikkonen would set a new fastest lap
telling Alonso that he was in control as the started his final lap. He would
complete the lap taking victory in the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. Alonso
was a distant second from Vettel, Massa, Hamilton, Webber, Sutil, Di Resta,
Button, and Grosjean in tenth. For Williams it must have been a frustrating
race with only one car finishing and that was well down the order. But at least Valtteri had completed his first race
without incident.
