Australian GP: Positive start for Williams F1 in FP1

The opening Friday practice for the 2014 Australian GP would see a positive start for Williams Martini Racing with team drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa finishing 3rd and 4th.

The opening Friday practice for the 2014 Australian Grand Prix the start of a new era in Formula One with the cars returning to using turbocharged 1.6 litre engines using hybrid systems. For the Williams F1 team it would be a new year with the team now know as Williams Martini Racing and with Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas their drivers. On the tyre front Pirelli was supply their medium and soft tyres for the event as the first session got underway.

It would be Alonso out first followed by Magnussen in his McLaren, followed by a rush of cars coming out for their installation laps. For the first driver to have a problem with his car was Hamilton with smoke coming from the rear seeing him stop out on the track on his first lap. Ricciardo would be the first driver to set a time with a 1m:37.290 followed by a 1m:37.762 from Magnussen. More drivers would set times as others improved with Valtteri moving into second for Williams. But it would be Alonso would go fastest with a 1m:33.127 but Rosberg would set a 1m:32.784 to be fastest.

But Alonso would respond with a 1m:32.588 to again be quickest as the first thirty minutes of the session was completed. All the drivers were out on the medium tyre with Valtteri currently in eighth having completed six laps. Both Raikkonen and Button had pitted with issues but Button would return his problems fixed. Button was third with a 1m:32.893. Ricciardo was fourth followed by Vergne, Hulkenberg, Magnussen and Valtteri. Button would go fastest in the first sector and would complete his lap setting a new quickest time with a 1m:32.357. Felipe had yet to take to the track with forty five minutes remaining.

Felipe would make his first appearance as Ricciardo set a 1m:32.599 to be third. Raikkonen was back out on the track and would move up to be fifth, 1m:33.345. For Hamilton his problem was a oil pressure alarm that had shut down his engine. As the session progressed Alonso would go fastest with a 1m:31.840 while both Williams drivers were out with Valtteri improving to be sixth, 0.960 seconds behind Alonso. With twenty minutes remaining Button was second followed by Felipe with a time of 1m:32.431 and Valtteri with a 1m:32.584. Valtteri had completed fiften laps on his medium tyres. Fifth was Ricciardo followed by Rosberg, Magnussen, Vettel, Raikkonen, and Vergne tenth. Valtteri had been asked to cool his rear brakes as the temperatures were too high.

With the final fifteen minutes the track was very busy with nine of the top en were all out on the track including both Williams cars. Six rivers had yet to set times including both Caterham's. Button would also pit with both Williams cars only completing two stints out on the track, with Valtteri having completed twenty laps and Felipe thirteen. Vettel was back out on the track while Lotus was having a struggle with Maldonado coming out only to run off the track and return to his pit. Neither Lotus had set a time as the session drew to a close.

Both Williams drivers were on longer runs with it looking like they were setting quicker laps followed by a slower one to possibly cool things down. Valtteri would go fastest in the middle sector but would finish with a 1m:32.929 on that lap. Both Williams drivers would continue this stint as the session drew to a close. With the end of the session Valtteri had been able to move ahead of his team-mate seeing Valtteri and Felipe would finish in an encouraging third and fourth with times of 1m:32.403 and 1m:32.431. Fastest was still Alonso with Button second. Fifth was Ricciardo followed by Rosberg, Vettel, Magnussen, Raikkonen, and Vergne in tenth.
