With the start of the opening Friday practice session for the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix would see Alonso out onto the track first followed by a large number of drivers all coming out for their installation laps. For the Williams Martini team Valtteri Bottas would come out first followed shortly after by team-mate Felipe Massa. Drivers were carrying logos on their helmets in remembrance of those on flight MH370. Both Williams drivers would pit after just one lap with just Vettel yet to appear. Everyone was on the hard tyre with the option tyre this weekend being the medium Pirelli tyre. Pirelli was supplying an extra set of hard tyres but they must be returned after the first thirty minutes of the session. Vettel would finally come out as Rosberg reported that he had a problem with his car entering the pit lane that nearly saw him spin. Vettel would pit leaving the track empty.

Several drivers would return to the track including both Williams cars, Ericsson, Gutierrez, and Chilton. With fifteen minutes of the session completed Gutierrez would set a 1m:45.851 but Valtteri would go fastest with a 1m:44.359. Felipe's first lap was a 1m:45.114 to be second. Chilton was fourth with a 1m:48.021. Ericsson would set a slow 1m:53.968. Valtteri would improve with a 1m:43.193 as Felipe set an improved 1m:44.601. We now had Alonso, Button, and Vergne out on the track as Alonso set a 1m:42.930 to be quickest. Valtteri was now second and Button third, 1m:44.078. Sutil was now sixth followed by Gutierrez, Ericsson, and Chilton. Button was now fastest with a 1m:42.531. The McLaren was running updates including a new front nose. Alonso would return to the top of the times with a 1m:41.923. Vergne was now third, 1m:42.782, but this would become fourth as Magnussen moved up to second, 1m:42.053.

Alonso would pit with Valtteri now fifth and Felipe eighth. Now we had Rosberg in third, 1m:42.089, followed by Button and Hamilton. Hulkenberg was now seventh and Sutil eighth. Valtteri had dropped to ninth and Felipe twelfth. Drivers would start to pit as the first half and hour of the session was completed and the drivers would have to return their extra set of tyres. Grosjean would stop his car at Turn nine, continuing
the Lotus teams difficult time. His car would be pushed off the track as Grosjean caught a lift back to the pits. Valtteri had completed ten laps in his first run with the track now empty. Neither of the Red Bull cars had set a time, joined by Kvyat, Perez, and both Lotus cars. Kvyat was back out on the track and would set a 1m:43.841 to be twelfth seeing Felipe now thirteenth. Kvyat's next lap was a 1m:43.082 to now be seventh. Other drivers would start to come back out with forty five minutes remaining in the session.

The track would again become very busy as Vergne went fastest with a 1m:41.402 but Magnussen would go quicker with a 1m:41.274. Felipe was back on the track for Williams while Valtteri remained in his pit. Valtteri and Felipe were now thirteenth and fifteenth. Raikkonen was now third, 1m:41.512. Alonso was now fourth followed by Rosberg, Button, Ricciardo, and Hamilton in eighth. Magnussen would stop his car at the entrance to the pit saying that his car lost power and he had switched off the engine. Vettel was now thirteenth as Ricciardo moved in front of Button to be sixth. Rosberg would go fastest in sector one as Raikkonen went fastest with a 1m:40.843 only to be passed by Hamilton with a 1m:40.723. Rosberg was now third, 1m:41.028, and Button fourth. Felipe would improve with a 1m:41.686 to be eighth. Replays would show Valtteri getting into his car using a box as the car was still up on stands.

Hamilton would improve with a 1m:40.691 as Valtteri was finally able to return to the track with just under half an hour remaining. Felipe had spun at Turn eight but was able to continue. Valtteri was able to improve setting a 1m:41.830 to be tenth to be just behind Felipe in eighth. The track was now fairly quite with only a handful of cars on the track. Maldonado would come out for his first run with twenty minutes remaining. Felipe would pit as Maldonado's car would start to smoke with the team telling him to switch off the car. He would return to his pit lane without having set a time being pushed back by his mechanics to his garage. Hulkenberg was now eighth while team-mate Perez still had yet to set a time with a major issue with his car. Magnussen was able to return to the track as Valtteri pitted. Felipe and Valtteri were now ninth and tenth. Vettel was now seventh and Ricciardo twelfth.

Grosjean's car would be repaired and he would return but he would pit before setting a time with six minutes remaining. Both Williams cars were back out on the track with both drivers now having completed twenty two laps as the final minutes of the session counted down. Alonso was down in eleventh as the session came to an end. Hamilton was fastest from Raikkonen, Rosberg, Button, Magnussen, Verge, Vettel, Hulkenberg, Felipe, and Valtteri tenth. Apart from spin from Felipe the Williams Martini team would have a positive start to their weekend in a session that saw many teams continue to struggle with their new systems on their cars. The Williams team would complete practice pit stops as their cars returned to their garages.
