Qualifying for the 2014 Bahrain GP would see Williams Martini drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa finish in 4th and 8th. Both drivers were comfortably into the final period of qualifying, having set the same time. But Valtteri was able to pull out an advantage in the final period over Felipe finishing a few places ahead. But both drivers will start one place ahead of their qualifying positions due to penalties being hand out to other drivers.

After a very strong final practice for the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix the Williams Martini team would be looking forward to qualifying. Based o their practice times qualifying should be a session that will see both Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa make it into the final period. With the track lights on, with qualifying starting at 6PM, the first eighteen minute period would commence. The temperature was now lower than the final practice so quicker times were expected. Ricciardo would receive a ten place grid penalty for an unsafe release in Malaysia. Gutierrez was first out running on the medium tyre. Both Perez and Hulkenberg would also come out joined b y both Torro Rosso cars. Grosjean was out running on the soft tyre such was their lack of pace leading into qualifying.

Ricciardo was next out as Gutierrez set a 1m:38.521 to be quickest, if only for a brief time. Both Ferrari's were out along with the Caterham's, Maldonado, and Rosberg. Hulkenberg would go fastest with a 1m:36.883 followed by Grosjean, 1m:37.400, Kvyat, Perez and Vergne. Gutierrez would pit as more drivers came out. Hamilton and Button were out with only the Lotus and Caterham cars running on the soft tyre. A 1m:36.676 from Ricciardo with Raikkonen now fifth, 1m:37.898. Alonso was now second, 1m:36.729, with Hulkenberg third and back in his pit. Rosberg would go fastest with a 1m:35.439 but Hamilton would move ahead with a 1m:35.323. Button was now sixth with the Williams drivers yet to come out with eight and a half minutes remaining.

Vettel was in seventh, 1m:37.154, followed by Grosjean and Magnussen. Kvyat was now tenth as Sutil using the soft tyre was now fifth with a time of 1m:36.840. Gutierrez was back out on the soft tyre and would move into third with a 1m:36.567. Valtteri was out for his first run with both coming out on the soft tyre. This was to be expected given that they will most likely only do one run in the opening period. For Williams Rod Smedley was out on the Williams pit lane stand watching over proceedings. Valtteri would go fastest in sector one but was beaten by Hulkenberg. Valtteri continued his pace in the second sector while Felipe was 0.3 slower than Valtteri in sector one. Valtteri would end his lap setting a 1m:34.934 to go fastest but quickly Hulkenberg would go quicker with a 1m:34.874. Valtteri was now second as Felipe moved into third, 1m:35.085. But Perez would go third with a time of 1m:34.998.

Both Hamilton and Rosberg had pitted and were currently fifth and sixth as Valtteri pitted as the period drew to a close. Vettel was now seventh but as Raikkonen moved up to fifth and Kvyat seventh Vettel would drop to ninth. Both Williams drivers would pit as the period ended. Alonso would move up to sixth, 1m:35.251, while Magnussen set a 1m:35.288 to be seventh. Kvyat was now ninth while at the rear of the field Grosjean would make it into the second period finishing sixteenth, 1m:36.654. The top ten was Hulkenberg from Valtteri, Perez, Felipe, Raikkonen, Alonso, Magnussen, Hamilton, Kvyat, and Rosberg. Those not making the cut were Maldonado, Sutil, Kobayashi, Bianchi, Ericsson, and Chilton.

Prior to the start of the second period it was announced that an investigation would take place in regard to an incident involving Sutil and Grosjean. The second fifteen minute period would get underway with all sixteen drivers waiting in their pits but with thirteen minutes remaining we would have Hulkenberg, Valtteri and Felipe also coming out. Both Williams drivers had come out on the medium tyre but as more drivers came out they would all be on the soft tyre. This included Raikkonen, Alonso, Hamilton, Rosberg, Ricciardo, and Gutierrez. Valtteri would go fastest in sector one but was passed by Hulkenberg. A 1m:36.070 from Valtteri to be quickest but Hulkenberg would go quicker with a 1m:35.682. Raikkonen would go fastest but he would be quickly beaten with Hamilton setting the quickest time with a 1m:33.708, followed by Ricciardo and Alonso.

But Rosberg would go quicker with a 1m:33.708. Raikkonen was now fifth followed by Hulkenberg and Kvyat. But Magnussen was now fifth, 1m:34.904, with Felipe now tenth and Valtteri twelfth. Button would go fourth, 1m:34.714. Both Williams drivers had pitted while Vettel and Grosjean had yet to appear. Now we had Valtteri coming out on the soft tyre with four minutes remaining. Felipe was also back out with both Williams drivers on the new soft tyre. Vettel and Grosjean would both come out also on the soft tyre. The top six were still in their pits but all but the Mercedes cars would also come back out. Vettel would set a 1m:34.985 to be eighth. Valtteri would set a 1m:34.842 to be sixth. Felipe would pretty much match his team-mate setting a 1m:34.842 also. Perez would go sixth and Magnussen ninth and Raikkonen tenth. This would see Vettel drop to eleventh and out of qualifying. Vergne was thirteenth but Kvyat would take this spot.

With the end of the period it was Rosberg from Hamilton, Ricciardo, Button, Alonso, Perez, Valtteri, Felipe, Magnussen, and Raikkonen. Not making the cut were Vettel, Hulkenberg, Kvyat, Vergne, Gutierrez and Grosjean. For the Williams team both drivers had made it into the final period with Valtteri and Felipe seventh and eighth. Both drivers had set the same time of 1m:34.842.

With both Williams cars into the final period the twelve minute period would commence with little activity from the teams. With just over ten minutes remaining Valtteri would be first out followed by Felipe. Perez would also come out all on the option tyre. Both Williams drivers were on new soft tyres as more drivers left the pit lane, including Rosberg, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Alonso, and Magnussen. Only Button and Raikkonen had yet to come out as Valtteri started his flying lap. Button was now out on the track as other drivers started their timed laps. Valtteri would go fastest with a 1m:34.247 with Felipe setting a 1m:34.511 to be second. Perez was now second with Felipe third. Rosberg would go quicker with a 1m:33.185. Hamilton could only manage a 1m:33.464 to be second. Valtteri was now third followed by Perez, Felipe, Ricciardo, Magnussen, Alonso, with Button yet to set a time.

Both Williams drivers would pit as Button setting a 1m:35.166 to be sixth. Raikkonen was yet to set a time, with everyone except Button back in their garages. The teams had an extra soft tyre but would have to hand it back at the end of the period. After their stops all ten cars were back out on the track with two minutes remaining. Everyone was out on new soft tyres as Raikkonen started his lap and would finish it with a 1m:34.368 to be fifth. Hamilton would make a mistake ending his chances to take pole seeing Rosberg pit. Ricciardo would move to third and Valtteri fourth. But Ricciardo would have to drop ten places. Perez was fifth followed by Raikkonen, Button, Felipe, Magnussen, and Alonso. So the Williams drivers will start Sunday's race from third and seventh. This would be a repeat of Valtteri's best starting position from the 2013 Canadian GP. Rosberg would take pole from Hamilton and Ricciardo.

A great result for the Williams team but it was a bit disappointing not to see Felipe closer to his team-mate given that they had set equal times in the second period. Despite this the Williams team has another great opportunity to score further poins as well as even considering the possibility of a podium finish.
