June 7 2014

Qualifying for the 2014 Canadian GP would see the Williams Martini team produce on their best qualifying efforts for many years. The team would see Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa finish the session in 4th and 5th. A great result that was well deserved given their pace in the lead-up to qualifying..

After a strong final practice session for the Williams Martini team, with Felipe Massa finishing second and Valtteri Bottas, there was every chance that the Williams team could see both drivers close to the front after qualifying for the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix. With the sun still shinning the opening eighteen minute period would commence with Gutierrez not taking part after his accident in final practice session. For Williams Valtteri would come out first with Felipe also coming out. Ericsson would come out on the super soft tyre knowing that there was little point in using the soft tyre. More drivers would come out including Hamilton, Rosberg, Vergne, Kvyat, Hulkenberg, Magnussen, Grosjean, and Maldonado.

Valtteri would set a 1m:18.270 to be quickest but Felipe would set a 1m:17.728 to be a half second faster. Perez was now third from Grosjean, and Hulkenberg. But Magnussen would move up to fourth as Valtteri set a 1m:17.696 to be quickest from Felipe. Hulkenberg was now third with only two drivers yet to come out. Rosberg would set a 1m:16.690 to be quickest with Magnussen second with a 1m:17.587. Valtteri's next lap was a 1m:17.134 to again be second. A 1m:16.962 from Felipe to move ahead of Valtteri with Magnussen now fourth. Button was fifth from Alonso, Perez, Bianchi, Hulkenberg, and Maldonado. Bianchi was on the option tyre. Hamilton would move to the top of the times with a 1m:16.438.

Valtteri and Felipe were now third and fourth from Magnussen and Button. Rosberg would pit as Hamilton went fastest in sector one and two. Valtteri had also pitted while Felipe had set a 1m:16.666 to move ahead of his team-mate. Hamilton would complete his lap with a 1m:15.750. Felipe would also pit with seven minutes remaining. The order was Hamilton, Rosberg, Felipe, Valtteri, Button, Ricciardo, Vettel, Vergne, Magnussen, and Alonso tenth. Both Force India cars were out on the super soft tyre joined by Raikkonen who was in twelfth. Vergne would move up to eighth using the option tyre. Button would also use the option tyre to move into fifth, 1m:17.352. Hulkenberg would take this spot using the super soft tyre also. With two minutes remaining Magnussen would move into second with a time of 1m:16.446.

Vettel was told that he was not going out again as Button moved into fourth, 1m:16.631. As the period came to a close Maldonado would pull off the track at Turn three ending his qualifying. But the period would truly come to an end when Ericsson crashed his car at Turn nine. He would spin his car seeing it go backwards into the wall. So those not making it into the second period would be Maldonado, Chilton, Bianchi, Kobayashi, Ericsson, and Gutierrez who did not start the period. The top ten would finish with Hamilton fastest from Magnussen, Rosberg, Button, Felipe, Valtteri, Hulkenberg, Kvyat, Alonso, and Raikkonen tenth. For Williams neither driver had to use a set of option tyres having set times on the soft tyre that easily saw them into the second period.

The second fifteen minute period would commence with Sutil out first. Valtteri was out early going straight onto the option tyre. Felipe was also on the super soft tyre along with everyone else coming out. With four minutes completed there was only ten drivers on the track. A 1m:15.924 for Valtteri seeing him fastest from Hulkenberg and Kvyat. Felipe was able to set a time to be ahead of Valtteri with a 1m:15.733 to be quickest. Vergne was now third with only the McLaren's yet to come out. Sutil was in seventh but had pitted as Raikkonen went third. But he was beaten by team-mate Alonso with a 1m:16.131. So we had a Williams one-two followed by Alonso, Hulkenberg, Raikkonen, Vergne, Vettel, Kvyat, Perez, and Grosjean.

Both Ferrari's had pitted as Ricciardo moved into fourth, 1m:16.186. Rosberg running on the option tyre would set a 1m:15.832 to be second behind Felipe. Team-mate Hamilton would move into third, 1m:15.882, with Valtteri now fourth. Six minutes remaining and Button was now seventh, 1m:16.214, and Magnussen in ninth with a 1m:16.310. So Felipe was still fastest from the Mercedes pair. Hulkenberg would return to the track followed by both Williams cars. Perez would improve but could only manage twelfth as Vettel came back out, currently in thirteenth. The track would quickly fill as the final minutes commenced with only Alonso still in the pits.

Valtteri would improve his time setting a 1m:15.806 to be second. Raikkonen was now eighth as Ricciardo went fastest in sector one. But Rosberg would take this from the Red Bull driver. With the end of the period Vettel would go fifth, 1m:16.109. Valtteri had pitted as Hamilton went fastest in the opening two sectors. Felipe would pit as Rosberg went fastest, 1m:15.289, but Hamilton would take this spot with a 1m:15.054. Both Williams drivers would make it through into the final period but they were seven tenths of the pace of the Mercedes cars. Those not making the cut were Hulkenberg, Magnussen, Perez, Grosjean, Kvyat, and Sutil. The top ten was Hamilton, Rosberg, Felipe, Valtteri, Ricciardo, Vettel, Alonso, Button, Raikkonen, and Vergne.

Valtteri felt that traffic on his out-lap took the heat out of tyres and that was enough to cost him a shot at staying ahead of Vettel. Massa managed to split the Mercedes in final practice but would only be fifth. He said: "I'm quite happy with the car we have. I'm not happy with the position - it was definitely possible to have been third."

Bottas

The twelve minute final period would commence with no one rushing out onto the track. Valtteri would be first out running on new option tyres. Both Mercedes cars would come out joined by Alonso. Button was next out followed by others except for Raikkonen. A 1m:15.550 from Valtteri seeing him three tenths faster than he managed in Q2. Both Mercedes cars were swapping fastest sector times as Rosberg set a 1m:14.946 to go fastest. Hamilton would set a 1m:15.014 to be second with Valtteri now third. Valtteri would pit as Felipe went fourth with a 1m:15.621. Vettel was now fifth ahead of Alonso, Vergne, and Button.

Ricciardo would move ahead of Vettel with a 1m:15.636 to be fifth and Vettel sixth. Both Williams drivers were now back in their pits. Raikkonen would finally come out for his only run on a new set of option tyres. Vettel was next back out followed by both Mercedes, Valtteri, Alonso, Vergne, and Felipe. All ten cars were now out on the track as Raikkonen moved into eighth, 1m:16.214. Rosberg was on his next lap with Hamilton behind him on the track. Hamilton would go fastest in sector one and Rosberg fastest in sector two. Vettel would go third as Rosberg set a 1m:14.874 to be quickest Ricciardo was now fifth as Hamilton finished his lap with a 1m:14.953 to only manage second. For Williams Valtteri and Felipe would finish fourth and fifth.

The top ten was Rosberg followed by Hamilton, Vettel, Valtteri, Felipe, Ricciardo, Alonso, Vergne, Button, and tenth was Raikkonen. For Williams Valtteri was able to finish ahead of Felipe when it mattered in the final period. It was a great result for the Williams team to have both their drivers in the top ten and close to the front. Sundays race was even more encouraging for the Williams team given their competitive longer runs during Friday practice.
