In what was an overall uneventful session the Williams Martini team would see their drivers Felipe Massa and Suzie Wolff finish in 11th and 15th after the opening Friday practice session for the 2014 German GP. The only small issue was a sensor related one that saw Suzie forced to drive slowly back to the pits where the issue was quickly fixed. Valtteri Bottas will return in the second Friday session.
German GP Friday 1st
Practice
On a sunny day
the Williams Martini team would prepare Suzie Wolff who was replacing
Valtteri Bottas for the first of the Friday practice sessions for the 2014
German Grand Prix. Joining her would be Felipe Massa while at Sauber Van der
Gar was taking over from Gutierrez. On the technical front the big unknown
was the fact that the teams had been forced to remove the FRIC suspensions
systems as the FIA had viewed that they could be illegal. This system was designed to link
the front and rear suspensions to make the car more stable. The ninety
minute session would commence with Suzie first out shortly after followed by
Felipe for their installation laps. Suzie would report to the team that she
had a problem with the up shifts. She was told to stay in the gear she had
selected and was now crawling back to the pits.
Felipe would complete his lap and would pit as more drivers came out. Suzie
would report that there was an error light on her dash. The last driver to
come out would be Vettel as Suzie continued her slow trip back to the pits.
On the tyre front Pirelli had brought their soft and super soft tyres for
the weekend. Suzie would get back to her garage where the team would start
to try and determine the nature of the problem. She would stay in her car as
the mechanics worked. The Williams team would report that they thought they
had identified the problem. Ericsson would be the first to
return to the track joined by Kobayashi. Ericsson would set a 1m:28.480 as
Magnussen also came out. Both Marussia cars were also out on the track as
Suzie left her garage having had her issue sorted out. A 1m:25.401 from
Ericsson but Kobayashi would go faster with a 1m:24.466.
Both McLaren's were now out on the track while the second Williams would
come out. We also had both Torro Rosso's out on the track as Magnussen set a
1m:22.888 to be quickest. We now had both Mercedes cars out on the track as
Van der Gar set a 1m:22.679 to move ahead of Magnussen. Suzie would go ahead
of the Sauber to be quickest with a 1m:22.471. Both Red Bull cars were out
for their first runs as Magnussen set a 1m:20.471 to be quickest with Felipe
now second with a time of 1m:21.031. Button was third followed by Suzie,
Perez, and Van der Gar in sixth. Suzie would improve with a 1m:21.378 as
Hamilton moved up to be seventh, 1m:22.688. Both Ferrari's were out also
Kvyat would move up to be fifth, 1m:21.619, as Button went second as
Ricciardo fifth. Felipe would pit after his first run with Perez now fourth. Raikkonen was told to pit as there was a problem with
his water pump. Felipe was now third and Suzie sixth. Alonso had yet to set
a time but his first lap would see a 1m:20.653 to be third.
Suzie had dropped to be ninth and Felipe fifth. Rosberg would go quickest
with a 1m:20.337 with Vettel now fourth, 1m:20.650. Vettel would improve
with a 1m:20.295 to be quickest followed by Rosberg and Magnussen. Alonso
was now fourth with Sutil seventh and Vergne eighth. Perez and Hulkenberg
were tenth and eleventh with Suzie back in her pit with just over an hour
remaining. Rosberg was on a quicker lap with Ricciardo now fourth. Rosberg
would pit with the track now empty. The drivers had all pitted to return
their extra set of soft tyres after the first half hour. Chilton would come out and set a 1m:23.652 to be twentieth. Kobayashi would
be next out while for Williams Felipe and Suzie were ninth and twelfth.
Raikkonen had yet to set a time as the team tried to fix his pump issue.
Ericsson and Kvyat would come back out followed by Vergne and Vettel. Kvyat
would improve to be third with a 1m:20.425. Grosjean was also back out with
just over forty minutes remaining. Bianchi and Raikkonen were also back out
joined by Button and Hulkenberg.
Ricciardo was next out as Vergne moved up to be eighth, 1m:20.622. Rosberg
and Magnussen had also returned to the track as Raikkonen moved up to be
fourth with a 1m:20.454. Button would go fastest with a 1m:20.087 followed
by Vettel and Rosberg. But Ricciardo would also improve to be quickest with
a 1m:19.697 Hamilton was down in nineteenth as Kvyat pitted. Neither of the
Williams cars had come back out Felipe and Suzie were fourteenth and fifteenth. Rosberg would
go quicker with a 1m:19.276 with Hamilton now second with a 1m:19.615.
Grosjean would have to pit with an issue with his DRS that would see the
team have to change his rear wing. A 1m:19.545 from Hamilton to remain
second as Rosberg went fastest in sector one. He would finish his lap with a
1m:19.131 to be quickest by four tenths. Alonso was now fourth with a
1m:19.831. With an hour completed the order was Rosberg from Hamilton,
Ricciardo, Alonso, Button, Vettel, Magnussen, Raikkonen, Kvyat and Vergne
tenth.
Both Williams cars were now back out for their second runs with Hamilton
setting a 1m:19.196 still in second with Alonso now third, 1m:19.423. Felipe
was Suzie had set a 1m:20.849 and a 1m:20.983 but Suzie would improve
slightly with a 1m:20.769 to be fourteenth. Felipe was now sixteenth but on
his next lap he would set a 1m:20.542 to be tenth. Suzie was now fifteenth
while Sutil went tenth with a 1m:20.505. Felipe would run wide at Turn one but would continue. He was not
the only driver to run wide with Rosberg having gone off the track at
various corners. There were only four cars on the track but this would
become two as both Williams cars pitted. Felipe had reported understeer with
his car that saw him pit for changes to be made with twenty minutes
remaining. With fifteen minutes remaining cars would start to come back out
for their final runs with nine of the top ten back out on the track. It was
expected that both Williams cars would also come back out as Hamilton
pitted. Felipe was back out for his last run with little to be expected in
terms of times given that he was on used soft tyres.
Suzie was also out for her final run currently just 0.227 behind Felipe.
Alonso would also pit briefly with Button also coming in. Button would
become the only driver in the pits as the final five minutes commenced. The
final minutes would count down as Felipe improved his first sector time but
would remain eleventh. Drivers would start to return to their pits as the
session drew to a close. With the end of the session the Williams pair of
Felipe Massa and Suzie Wolff would finish in eleventh and fifteenth. For
Suzie it was later revealed that here earlier problem had been a sensor
issue. Apart from this it was an uneventful session for the Williams team as
they worked through their schedule.
