Italian GP: Williams Martini 3rd & 4th in FP3

The final practice session for the 2014 Italian Grand Prix would see the Williams Martini drivers finish in 3rd and 4th. Valtteri Bottas was third with team-mate Felipe Massa 4th just the barest margin behind his team-mate. This was a great result for the Williams team as they prepare for qualifying.

Friday practice for the 2014 Italian Grand Prix had seen both Williams Martini cars in the top ten. Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa had finished in fifth and ninth. There long run pace was very promising as well as their speed trap figures were amongst the highest. With the start of the final Saturday practice Valtteri would be first out for Williams with Felipe following him shortly after with everyone on the hard tyre. Both Valtteri and Felipe would pit after one lap while the news had Kvyat incurring a ten place grid penalty for exceeding his engine allocation, having being forced to change his engine unit for the sixth time. More drivers were coming out with Rosberg first out for Mercedes.

The only teams yet to send out their drivers were Red Bull and Force India. Kobayashi would set the first time with a 1m:33.344 with team-mate Ericsson setting a 1m:34.574. Magnussen would go quicker with a slow 1m:32.296 with Button moving ahead with a 1m:30.913. Kobayashi would take the top spot with a 1m:30.523 but Ericsson would also move ahead with the times very slow. The first semi quick time would come from Button with a 1m:27.076. Both Force India cars were out for their installation lap joined by Vettel and Ricciardo. A 1m:29.955 from Kobayashi seeing him second with Hulkenberg setting a time with a 1m:28.285 to be second. Button was on a quicker lap as drivers started to return to the track including Kvyat, Chilton, Vergne, and both Lotus cars. Button would finish his lap with a 1m:26.845 from Hulkenberg and now Hamilton in third, 1m:29.297. Vettel would move into fourth, 1m:29.415, as Button pitted.

Perez was now third, 1m:27.709, from Kvyat and Hamilton now fifth. Both Williams cars had made their way back onto the track as Vergne went fifth pushing team-mate Kvyat to sixth. Ricciardo was now second with a time of 1m:27.100 as the McLaren mechanics were working on Magnussen's front brakes. Valtteri was on a quick lap going fastest in sector two finishing with a 1m:26.915 to be second. Felipe would join him near the front setting a 1m:27.076 to be fourth. With just over forty minutes remaining the order was Button from Valtteri, Hulkenberg, Felipe, Ricciardo, Perez, Vettel, Kvyat, Vergne, and Hamilton tenth. Felipe was told that he could find some time braking at the second chicane. Valtteri would finish his lap setting a 1m:26.693 to be quickest.

Felipe would drop to fifth with Alonso going fourth, 1m:27.065. But Felipe's next lap would see him go second with a 1m:26.790. The track was now fairly empty with the drivers completing their first runs. Valtteri would pit first for Williams as Felipe dropped to third with Alonso now second, 1m:26.693, with a time the same as Valtteri. Raikkonen was now fifth, 1m:27.004, with thirty five minutes remaining in the session. Sutil and Rosberg had yet to set a time with just four drivers on the track. It was confirmed that Rosberg had a gearbox issue and was out for the session. Magnussen's car was back out on the track after his repairs were completed. Perez would stop out on the track with a gearbox issue not been able to select or change gears.

Ricciardo and Vettel were now seventh and ninth as Valtteri returned to the track, followed by Felipe. Both were still on the hard tyre as Perez's car was pushed off the track. Hamilton was on a very quick lap while Button would go fastest with a 1m:26.573 only to have Hamilton move ahead with a 1m:25.742 to be 0.831 ahead of Button with both Williams around one second off this new quickest time. Ricciardo was now fifth seeing Felipe drop to sixth. Button had pitted as Hamilton went faster in sector one only to see Alonso go quicker but he was on the medium tyre. Alonso would finish his lap with a time of 1m:25.931 to be second as Felipe pitted. Valtteri and Felipe now fourth and sixth. Raikkonen was also back out on the medium tyre as Hamilton pitted. Felipe would return with both drivers still on the hard tyre with seventeen minutes remaining.

Both Williams drivers would pit as Raikkonen moved up to third with a 1m:26.327. Sutil was finally able to set a time with a 1m:29.567 as Hulkenberg came out on the medium tyre. Raikkonen would pit as Alonso came back out on older medium tyres. Ricciardo was also out on the medium tyre joined by Button. Ten minutes remaining and Hamilton was also out for his medium tyre run with Valtteri first out for Williams on the option tyre. Ricciardo was on a quicker lap setting a 1m:26.482 to be fourth. Button would go fastest in the middle sector as Felipe took to the track. Now it was Hamilton fastest in the middle sector as Button went third with a 1m:26.294. Team-mate Magnussen was in ninth as Valtteri set a 1m:26.090 to be third. Felipe would go quickest in sector one with a personal best in sector two. He would finish his lap with a 1m:26.114 to be fourth behind Valtteri.

The final four minutes of the session commenced as Hamilton failed to improve his quickest time. Valtteri was able to find further pace on his next lap but would lose time in the final sector remaining third. Vettel would move into sixth, 1m:26.290 with the order Hamilton from Alonso, Valtteri, Felipe, Button, Vettel, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg and Kvyat tenth. Valtteri would pit while at the front Hamilton was able to improve with a 1m:25.519. This would see him 0.412 ahead of Alonso. Valtteri's stop was brief having completed a practice start, with both Williams cars till on the track. But Felipe would pit as the session came to an end. He would be followed by Valtteri as the rest of the field also came in. Felipe would complete the usual practice pit stop upon his return to the pits. Kvyat had moved into eighth in the closing moments of the session.

Third and fourth from the Williams pair which was a great result in the lead-up to qualifying. It was even more encouraging to see Felipe just 0.024 behind Valtteri. The top ten would finish with Hamilton fastest from Alonso, Valtteri, Felipe, Button, Vettel, Raikkonen, Kvyat, Ricciardo, and Hulkenberg. Pat Symonds would say after the session that it was going to be tight and that the second row is realistically where they are aiming for.
