The opening Friday practice session would see the Williams Martini team drivers finish in 7th and 17th. Valtteri Bottas would lead his team-mate Felipe Massa by a considerable margin but the team was confident that this would be fixed for the next session. Valtteri's performance was encouraging given the fuel and engine settings that the Williams team runs in this early session. Felipe would spend most of his session going sideways as he tried to come to grips with his car and the track.
