The results of the 2016 Spanish GP would see the Williams Martini team secure a double points scoring result. Valtteri Bottas would finish 5th while team-mate Felipe Massa was able to finish in 8th despite having started the race from 18th. This was a great drive from Felipe while the Williams team again delivered on their pit stops. Their race strategy also allowed Felipe to gain the places but overall the team is still suffering from the lack of pace of the FW38.
Spanish GP Race Review
The Williams
Martini team would see their drivers start the sixty six lap 2016 Spanish
Grand Prix from seven with Valtteri Bottas while his team-mate Felipe Massa
was well down the grid in eighteenth. On pole was Hamilton followed by
Rosberg, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Raikkonen, and Vettel in sixth. All top ten
drivers would start on used soft tyres while of those outside only Haryanto
would not start on the soft tyre the Manor driver choosing the medium. But
outside the top ten the majority of drivers were staring on new soft tyres.
The grid would move away and after their parade lap would form up and with
the grid ready the lights would go off and it would be Rosberg passing
Hamilton around the outside at Turn one. But Hamilton would crash into
Rosberg seeing the Safety Car come out. Both Mercedes cars were out with
replays showing that Rosberg had moved over seeing Hamilton take to the
grass and then make contact with his team-mate seeing both go off. Ricciardo
was now leading with Verstappen second. Valtteri was down in sixth while
Felipe was in nineteenth. Sainz was in third followed by Vettel and
Raikkonen. It was announced that the incident between Rosberg and Hamilton
would be investigated after the race.
Lap five and
Ricciardo was leading his team-mate by 1.3 seconds. lap eight and Vettel
would pass Sainz but the Spaniard would get back past. Finally Vettel would
get past Sainz using his DRS at Turn one. Valtteri was 1.1 seconds behind
Raikkonen while Felipe was only up to sixteenth. Raikkonen would run wide as
he tried to pass Sainz. Felipe would pit on lap ten changing to the medium
tyre. Raikkonen would also pass Sainz for fourth using his DRS at Turn one.
Lap twelve and Sainz, Button, and Hulkenberg would all pit taking on the
medium tyre. With the stops Valtteri was now fifth as Ricciardo pitted on
lap thirteen. Alonso and Palmer would also come in also taking on the medium
tyre.
Grosjean was now fifth behind Valtteri but they had yet to pit. Verstappen,
Raikkonen, and Valtteri all pitted on lap fourteen. This would see Vettel
leading from Grosjean. Ricciardo was now third followed by Verstappen,
Gutierrez, and Raikkonen. In his pit stop Valtteri would get past Sainz
while team-mate Felipe was up to thirteenth. He would pass Haryanto for
twelfth. Vettel was now leading Ricciardo by 16.1 seconds but Vettel would
pit on lap seventeen joined by Grosjean. Vettel's stop seemed to indicate
that he was going to do a two stop race. Felipe was now up to eleventh
behind the two McLaren's. As a result of stops he would move into tenth with
Valtteri in a lonely fifth.
Vettel was
starting to close in onto Verstappen with Raikkonen 4.6 seconds behind his
team-mate. Hulkenberg would retire with flames coming from the rear of his
car. He would stop near a marshal at Turn thirteen and would help put the
fire out. Felipe would pit again on lap twenty eight taking on the soft
tyre. He would drop to fifteenth. Valtteri was now 17.8 seconds behind
Raikkonen. Ricciardo would pit on lap thirty seeing a three stop strategy
from the Red Bull. He would take on soft tyres coming back out in fourth.
Vettel would pit the next lap also taking on soft tyres. This would see
Verstappen leading from Raikkonen and Ricciardo. Vettel was fourth followed
by Valtteri.
Felipe was now up to tenth while on lap thirty six Verstappen would pit
coming back out on medium tyres. This would see him behind Vettel
effectively dropping to third. It was looking like he was not going to stop
again but he had thirty laps remaining. Raikkonen would also pit coming back
out on the medium tyre. Perez had pitted from seventh coming back out in
tenth. This would see Felipe now ninth but he would move ahead of those on
mediums to be seventh. Vettel would pit on lap thirty nine taking on the
medium tyre and running in fourth.
Sainz would pit
from sixth on lap forty. Valtteri was stil in fifth while Felipe was now up
to sixth. Valtteri would pit on lap forty one with Alonso also coming out.
Valtteri would return on the medium tyre still in fifth. Ricciardo was
leading but running at a slower pace than those behind due to traffic.
Felipe would pit on lap forty three dropping to eleventh behind Button. He
was on medium tyres like his team-mate. Ricciardo would pit on lap forty six
coming back out in fourth. Verstappen was now leading Raikkonen but the pair
were on older medium tyres than Vettel and Ricciardo who were third and
fourth. Felipe was back into tenth with Valtteri still a lonely fifth.
Alonso would pull off the track retiring having lost power with team-mate
Button in eleventh. Raikkonen was starting to attack Verstappen now within
DRS range. Felipe was now up to ninth having past Kvyat. At the front there
were two battles with Raikkonen trying to pass Verstappen and Ricciardo
trying to pass Vettel. Felipe was now in eighth as the final laps counted
down. Button would pass Gutierrez for ninth with Kvyat then passing the Hass
for tenth. Raikkonen would drop out of DRS range but for Ricciardo he would
suffer a puncture and would have to pit. Ricciardo would come back out in
fourth . At the front Verstappen would keep Raikkonen behind to take victory
in the 2016 Spanish GP. Raikkonen was second followed by Vettel, Ricciardo,
Valtteri, Sainz, Perez, Felipe, Button, and Kvyat.
A double points
scoring finish for the Williams Martini team with Felipe having put in a
great drive to come from such a poor starting position to finish in the
points. It was a race where the Williams team seemed to deliver in terms of
their pit stops and strategy. But the team still is suffering from a lack of
pace from the FW38.
