Qualifying for the fifty three lap 2016 Italian GP would see the Williams Martini cars of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa finish in fifth and eleventh positions. Valtteri would have to start the race on the supersoft tyre but Felipe would have the choice of tyre which will help him in his race strategy. It was looking like that a two stop strategy was a possibility. Of the top ten both Mercedes cars would start the race on the soft tyre with Hamilton on pole followed by Rosberg. Vettel was third followed by Raikkonen, Valtteri, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Perez, Hulkenberg, and Gutierrez in tenth. All these drivers were on the supersoft tyre while Felipe was also on the soft tyre for the start. There was a mix of soft and supersoft tyres in the second half of the gird with Occon on the medium, starting last.

The grid would move off and reform and with the lights going out it would be Rosberg leading but with the two Ferrari's in second and third. Valtteri was now fourth with Vettel the leading Ferrari. Ricciardo was fifth under attack from Hamilton. Felipe was up to eighth behind Perez. Hamilton would finally pass Ricciardo going into the second chicane. Palmer and Nasr would make contact at the first chicane ending Nasr's race with suspension damage. Rosberg was leading by 1.6 seconds over Vettel. Palmer would pit to get a new front wing. Valtteri would go fastest in sector one but Hamilton was now 0.6 seconds behind him. Hamilton would try to get past on the main straight but the Williams was very quick on the straight.

Felipe had dropped back from Perez but the pair were on different tyres. Hamilton would rop back from Valtteri but he was on the soft tyre and Valtteri on the supersoft tyre. Lap seven and Rosberg was 2.1 seconds ahead of Vettel while Nasr would retire in his pit having made it back. Verstappen, who had made a poor start, was up to ninth 1.9 seconds behind Felipe. Hamilton would close in onto Valtteri as Valtteri started to lose grip with his supersoft tyre. Palmer would pit and retire his car on lap ten. Valtteri would continue to hold off Hamilton closing the door at the first chicane while at the front Rosberg was 4.5 seconds ahead of Vettel. Hamilton would pass Valtteri using DRS on the main straight seeing Felipe now fifth. Hamilton was now 12.1 seconds behind Rosberg with twelve laps completed.

Hamilton would say that his rears were pretty wasted. Valtteri was now coming under the attention of Ricciardo with the gap around one second. Valtteri would pit on lap fifteen joined by Verstappen and Alonso. Valtteri would come out on a brand new set of soft tyres in thirteenth. Verstappen would drop to sixteenth and Alonso eighteenth. Felipe was now seventh as Hulkenberg pitted on lap sixteen. He would come out in sixteenth running on the soft tyre with Valtteri moving up to tenth. Valtteri had passed both Sainz and Button cruising past both. Raikkonen would pit on lap seventeen taking on the supersoft tyre indicating that he will stop twice. Felipe was now in fifth ahead of Raikkonen. Valtteri was now up to eighth while at the front Rosberg was leading by 15.1 seconds over Hamilton. Vettel had pitted seeing the Mercedes move ahead. Felipe would also pit taking on new soft tyres coming back out in eleventh.

Vettel was back out on third also on the supersoft tyre like his team-mate. Grosjean was in fifth but on very well used soft tyres. Rosberg and Hamilton were still out on their used soft tyres with Rosberg leading by 14.3 seconds. Valtteri would pass Grosjean on the main straight using his DRS. Ricciardo would also pass Grosjean to again be behind the Williams. Hamilton was able to close the gap to Rosberg to be 13.1 seconds after twenty one laps. Valtteri was still fifth and Felipe tenth. Perez would pass Grosjean for seventh using his DRS on the main straight. Verstappen would also pass Grosjean to be eighth. Rosberg would pit on lap twenty six taking on the medium tyre for what would be a one stop strategy. Rosberg would come out in second ahead of Vettel. Hamilton would pit on the next lap coming out in fourth behind the Ferrari's. Hamilton was also on the medium tyre while for Williams Valtteri saw his lead over Ricciardo down to under a second.

Rosberg would set a new fastest lap with a 1m:26.599 to be 4.9 seconds ahead of Vettel. But Hamilton would match this to be 10.8 seconds behind his team-mate. Felipe was up to ninth as Wehrlein was told to stop his car immediately and switch off, seeing his race over. Perez would pit from seventh on lap thirty joined by Grosjean. Perez was back in eleventh on a new set of soft tyres. Valtteri would pit again on lap thirty two dropping to ninth running on new soft tyres. This would see Ricciardo in fifth and Verstappen sixth. The Williams team was looking for Valtteri to manage these soft tyres to last the twenty two laps remaining. Felipe was running in seventh but yet to stop again. Perez would pass Alonso for tenth using his DRS on the main straight. Valtteri was running behind Hulkenberg and was told to get past quickly which he would do on the main straight.

Vettel would pit on lap thirty five coming out in fifth behind Ricciardo. Felipe and Valtteri were now running seventh and eighth ahead of both Force India cars. Raikkonen would pit the next lap seeing Hamilton now second with Ricciardo third followed by Vettel, Verstappen, and Raikkonen. Rosberg was now leading Hamilton by 11.3 seconds. It was looking like Rosberg had the pace over his team-mate. Both Ferrari's were on soft tyres while on lap thirty eight Verstappen would pit coming back out in ninth. Felipe would pit on lap thirty eight taking on the supersoft tyre to run to the end. Ricciardo would pit from third on lap thirty nine coming out in sixth behind Valtteri. He would come out on the supersoft tyre to run to the end. Valtteri and Felipe were now fifth and tenth with forty laps completed.

Hamilton was now 10.7 seconds behind Rosberg with thirteen laps remaining. At the first chicane Hamilton would lock a break and have to take to the run-off area losing time to Rosberg. The gap between the pair was now 12.8 seconds with forty three laps completed. Ricciardo was 2.2 seconds behind Valtteri but he would close the gap to be within DRS range of the Williams. He would pass the Williams going into the first chicane getting past under some late breaking. Valtteri would drop to sixth with Felipe still ninth. Perez and Hulkenberg were eighth and tenth with Perez having passed the Force India. Lap fifty and Rosberg was leading by 12.7 seconds over Hamilton with Vettel and Raikkonen third and fourth. Ricciardo would open the gap to Valtteri as the race drew to a close.

Rosberg would start his final lap which he would complete without any issues to take victory in the 2016 Italian GP. Hamilton was second followed by Vettel, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Valtteri, Verstappen, Perez, Felipe and Hulkenberg. The Williams team would come away with ten points and Force India five seeing Williams move back ahead of their rivals to again be fourth in the Constructors Championship. Not a stunning race for the Williams team but they came away with what was probably the best result that they could have hoped for. Those in front of Valtteri simply had the pace to end any hopes of a repeat podium for the Williams team.
