The opening day of the second week of pre-season testing would see Felipe Massa out for the Williams Martini team. Felipe would take to the track early in the FW40 looking to recover lost time from the first week of testing. Quickest in the early stages would be Hamilton with a 1m:28.202 but Vettel would quickly pass this with a 1m:25.231 but would improve on this with a 1m:23.298. Felipe had pitted and it would not be until the second half hour that he would come back out. Felipe was on the soft tyre and would set a 1m:23.334. Felipe would continue to put in laps and was able to get into the 1m22s with a 1m:22.927, to be half a second behind Vettel.

Vettel would lower his quickest time with a 1m:22.235 running on the soft tyre. He would lower his quickest time with a 1m:21.912 but Ricciardo was able to set a 1m:20.964 also on the soft tyre to go quickest. He had previously set a 1m:21.233 but was able to find further time. Felipe was back in his pit at this time having completed seventeen laps. Felipe was now third but would drop down one place to be behind Vandoorne, also on the soft tyre. Vettel was seen running on a set of unmarked Pirelli tyres in his first run. Ricciardo would improve with a 1m:20.964 with an hour and a quarter of the morning session run. Hamilton was now in this with a 1m:22.063 also on the soft tyre.

Felipe would return to the track and would continue to lap the circuit and was able to improve with a 1m:21.867 to be second. Having complete thirty laps Felipe would pit ending his longer run. Ricciardo was able to lower his quickest time with a 1m:20.790. Hamilton would also improve moving into second with a 1m:21.080. Felipe was now in third with just under two hours completed. On the medium tyre Vettel was able to move ahead of Felipe with a 1m:21.321. Felipe would return to the track still on the soft tyre and would improve with a 1m:21.617. AS the morning progressed Ricciardo would improve with a 1m:20.077 while Felipe would also find time with a 1m:20.308, both on the soft tyre.

Felipe would pit and his next run would see him return this time on the super soft tyre. He would finish with a time of 1m:20.084 to be just behind Ricciardo with an hour remaining in the morning session. Felipe had now complete fifty laps and after a short stop would return this time on the supersoft tyre and would complete a few laps prior to pitting again. He would set the best final sector time but the rest of his lap would not see him improve. His next run would see him again on the super soft tyre and he was able to move ahead of Ricciardo with a 1m:19.726. This time was just two hundredths off the quickest time set by Bottas the week before. His time is even more impressive given he was on super soft's. Felipe's next run was on the medium tyre while Ricciardo would improve with a 1m:19.900 running on the ultra soft tyre. Hamilton was third with a 1m:20.456 set on the soft tyre as the morning session came to an end.

With the start of the afternoon session Vettel would be the first of the front runners to improve setting a 1m:20.387 to be third. In his first afternoon run Felipe would return on the soft tyre and would return to his pit with ninety laps completed. Vettel would also move into the 1m:19s with a 1m:19.986 to be two tenths behind Felipe but still third in the times. As the afternoon progressed Felipe would pass the one hundred lap mark showing some good reliability from the FW40. With an hour remaining Felipe would pass the one hundred and thirty seven lap mark. He would complete the day with one hundred and sixty eight laps completed. The afternoon runs would see Felipe focus on the medium tyre in what was a productive days testing for the Williams team.

Williams Martini Racing returns to track tomorrow with Felipe Massa in the morning session and Lance Stroll in the afternoon session.

It was an excellent day for the team today. We were a little on the back foot after the first test, so we modified our test programme to make up for some of the lost track time, and cover as much work as we could . We did this successfully and completed our programme on schedule. We planned for 165 laps and we’ve done slightly better than that with 168, so we’re very happy. We got some really significant testing done today.

Felipe Massa:
It was a very long day but it was definitely a great one for the team. We managed to do 168 laps so for the car, the team, and the reliability, it was definitely a great day. We did everything we were supposed to do. It’s always nice when you finish a day of testing and you’ve done everything that you planned to do, including completing a race distance. Our lap times were also competitive, which is always a good feeling. We’re still at the beginning of the year and there’s so many things to do and to understand, to figure out where we are compared to the others, but it’s definitely a very positive day. I’m happy with all of the laps that I did and the job that the whole team did today was great.
