As the ROKiT Williams Team prepares for the next round of the 2019 F1 season in Belgium there has been a lot of discussion regarding the apparent progress that was made in Hungary. The team had introduced various updates in the German Grand Prix but it would not be until Hungary that the team appeared to make progress. But even with these results in Hungary there has been a lot of discussion as to whether these steps forward will continue to see improvements in Belgium.

As the ROKiT Williams Team prepares for the next round of the 2019 Formula One season in Belgium there has been a lot of discussion regarding the apparent progress that was made in Hungary. The team had introduced various updates in the German Grand Prix but it would not be until Hungary that the team appeared to make progress.

But even with these results in Hungary there has been a lot of discussion as to whether these steps forward will continue to see improvements in Belgium. The team has been working hard to restore their 2019 season but it has taken up to the summer break to see the team make any significant progress. Up to this point the team has only see a single point scoring result and this came from another team receiving penalties.

But for Senior Engineer Dave Robson in a recent report for Autosport.com he spoke of what these improvements had proved with the Williams team. In relation to the improvements in Hungary Dave commented: "testament to an awful lot of work both at the factory and here".

"I wouldn't say everything was completely vindicated yet.

"We'll have to see what happens at Spa and beyond, but I think the progress is there."

The same report also highlighted the measures that the team had been forced to make in order to turn their season around. The team has been forced to complete an extensive review of the way they do things and start to make changes to step away from those things that saw the team have such a disastrous start to the 2019 season.

Speaking to Autosport.com, Williams' Chief Engineer Adam Carter said: “The biggest challenge I would say, is that you can continue to turn the handle on the machine that you’ve got, or effectively you have to stop the machine and reconfigure the machine and set it going again.

“In this industry things are constantly evolving, and you’re in competition, and you have to make a conscious decision to stop, rebuild and then start going again for the greater potential and opportunity afterwards.

“That, for me, is one of the hardest things.”

He also spoke of the improvements that appeared to be made in Hungary, he added: “It’s like everything in this industry; you design, develop, correlate, design, develop, correlate, and that builds the confidence for you to set your path and direction.

“It doesn’t matter how far we’ve gone down the path. It answers a few questions, raises a number of other questions.

“You set down the path of a strategy and you constantly assess your progress along it, and change your strategy as the environment is changing.”

But not only has the Williams team been looking at their 2019 season but also years ahead as they aim to ensure that firstly 2020 is not a repeat of 2019 and then secondly that they can manage the new regulations coming in 2021.

But ultimately it will be the race in Belgium that will answer the question as to whether the progress that has been made by the team continues and we continue to see both George Russell and Robert Kubica make progress and start to challenge other teams in the midfield group.

Autosport has another article today with some interesting stuff from Carter on Williams's work on correlating data from the factory with the track: Williams must "keep perspective" over rapid gains with 2019 F1 car

Needless to say, adventurous expectations, but more realistically if by Abu Adabi, George Russel's Team can show some real improvement, I think there should be some be optimism for 2020.

There is also a lot from Dave Robson
Quote:

"So now as we do these development tests and correlation tests the data quality and quantity are both off the scale compared to where we used to be," he said.
"You need the tools to process that data at the same rate as we gather it as well.
"You have to have matched gear pairs across the whole business.
"There's no point having the best rakes in the world and doing the best experiments in the world and not having the analysis tools of the same calibre to support them.
"Now we go round the whole loop a lot quicker. It's not just about designing the car, it's designing the tools to design the car."
And this sounds strange to me in 2 ways
1st: Seems as team slept last few years and now awoke looked around and.... "we need data, more data, better data!!!"
2nd: " it's designing the tools to design the car" ??? really? is Williams in position to do all this by themselves? aren't there industrial standards or proven partners, or outsourcing way of doing this? This brings situation when if sth goes wrong you will never know if you made mistake designing car or designing tools, or both... weird.

Maybe he has a bit of Ronspeak in himself. To me, he means they need better correlation between track data and wind tunnel, better job with CFD and maybe they lack a trackside genius like Mark Gillan to use all of the data they are gathering in a useful way.

None of the things above are unreachable for a team in size of Williams.

I’m looking forwards to a strong 2nd half of the season. Improving all the way home!
