August 2 2020

The results from the 2020 Britsih GP would see the Williams Racing Team again finish out of the points but despite this it was a race filled with so many positives with George Russell finishing in 12th and Nicholas Latifi 15th. Both Williams drivers would get the best out of what is still a far from competitive FW43. But even so both drivers showed a level of competitiveness which has them seriously challenging the likes of Haas and Alfa Romeo. With the enxt race again at Silverstone they again have an opportunity to acheive a better result.

Williams Racing British Grand Prix Race Review

The grid for the fifty two lap 2020 British Grand Prix would see the Williams Racing Team have both cars start from the rear of the grid. One, that of George Russell, was there through a penalty given for a yellow flag penalty. Nicholas Latifi would start from 18th and George 20th. Both would be on the medium tyre for the race start. On pole was Hamilton from Bottas. Both Mercedes were on the medium tyre. Verstappen, Leclerc and Stroll were also on the medium tyre for the start. Hulkenberg who was to start from 13th could not get out before the pit exit closed due to an issue so would see the start from his garage with the team not been able to resolve his issues with the team having to take the floor off his car. Verstappen would start from third followed by Leclerc, Norris, Stroll, Sainz, Ricciardo, Ocon and Vettel tenth. Norris was on the soft tyre joined by Sainz, Ricciardo, Ocon and Vettel. Outside the top ten they were all on the medium..

The field would complete the parade lap and with the start it would be Hamilton leading from Bottas. Verstappen was third from Leclerc and Norris. But Sainz would move into fifth from Ricciardo and Sainz. Magnussen would go off into the gravel after Albon would make contact with the right rear of the Haas. Magnussen ahd made a good dtsrt but hit a kerb allowing a gap for Albon to try to pass. Albon was running now in 12th as the Safet car came out. The Williams drivers were running in 17th and 18th. The Safety Car would finish and Hamilton would keep his lead at the restart. Albon would pit on lap eight changing to the hard. The incident between Albon and Magnussen was under investigation.

Lap fourteen and Kvyat would crash heavily and we would see a rush of cars coming in including both Williams. The Williams drivers would both switch to the hard tyre. the only driver not to pit was Grosjean who stayed out on the medium. The Williams pair were now running in 15th and 17th. George was running behind Albon as the Safety Car period continued. The Safety Car period would end of lap twenty and the race would restart with Hamilton still leading. Albon would get a five second penalty for his part in the incident with Magnussen. George was running right behind Raikkonen with twenty seven laps completed. George would finally pass Raikkonen for 15th. Nicholas was running in 17th. But Nicholas would get past the Alfa Romeo to move into 15th after we had seen Albon pit droping behind both Williams cars. Grosjean would pit taking on the hard tyre making a slow stop..

This would see the Williams drivers 13th and 14th. Albon having pitted and changed to mediums would pass Nicholas for 14th seeing the Williams now 15th. As the race drew to a close Nicholas was on the radio with his engineer looking at his advantage over Grosjean in 16th. At the front Hamilton was leading by 7.5s over Bottas, Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz, Norris, Ricciardo, Ocon, Gasly and Stroll tenth. But Bottas would have a failure on his left front with a puncture. This would see him drop down the order and be forced to pit. Verstappen would pit changing to the soft tyre looking to take the fastest lap. Bottas would return to the track this time on the soft tyre. Sainz would also have tyre problems seeing him forced to pit with a failed left front tyre. But Hamilton would also have the same problem as his team-mate on the last lap of the race. But he would be able to complete the last lap taking victory with Verstappen second and Leclerc third. Fourth would be Ricciardo followed by Norris, Ocon, Gasly, Albon, Stroll and Vettel tenth.

For Williams they would see their drivers finish in 12th and 15th with George leading Nicholas. It was definitely a race where both George and Nicholas got the best from their cars and despite not achieving a points result showed that they have a level of competitiveness that simply was not present in 2019.
