After several weeks of
speculation regarding the future of Williams Racing driver George Russell
the team via Acting Team Principal has finally confirmed that George Russell
and Nicholas Latifi will continue to race for them in 2021. The original
announcement regarding George and Nicholas's drives with Williams In 2021
was made by Claire Williams but since this announcement the team has new
owners which raised the idea that these new owners may not go ahead with the
already announced driver line-up.
The original speculation had
Sergio Perez aiming to secure a drive at Williams Racing in 2021 after his
departure from Racing Point.
The first time the subject of Russell's possible departure from Williams
Racing was brought up with Roberts he did not do the best of jobs quelling
this speculation and in some ways fuelled it.
But in interviews at this weekends Emilia Romagna Grad Prix Simon spoke on
the subject of the driver speculation.
He said: “I probably caused a bit of confusion last week, I’m sorry about
that.”
“We didn’t really want to comment on the driver position.
“Nothing’s changed and this is our driver line-up for this year and next
year. We’re very happy with them and we look forward to working with them in
a continued way.”
As for whether the Williams Team had any discussions with other drivers
Roberts would not go into this.
Also at these interviews George added his views on the matter of the
speculation regarding the 2021 Williams drivers.
George said: “It’s always nice to have stability, it’s never nice to hear
any speculation that your job is potentially up for grabs”
“I had to do the talking on the track and as Simon says, I was confident
nothing would change.”
