Austrian GP: Williams Racing so close to their goal
By Andrew Hooper
July 5 2021
The results of the 2021 Austrian GP would see the Williams Racing Team finish in 11th and 15th with George Russell leading team-mate Nicholas Latifi. But the results did give real guide as to how close the Williams Team came to securing their goal of their first points of the 2021 season. George had been running in the final points scoring position tenth but despite a tough defence over the closing laps of the race he would see Alonso get past seeing him drop to 11th. The results were on one hand disappointing to again be so close but also very promising as again the Williams team had shown that they are made gains during the course of the season seeing their improved their performances. The next race is the teams home Grand Prix run at Silverstone so no doubt the team will be pushing hard to secure a good result at this event.
Williams Racing Austrian Grand Prix Race Review
In what was their best
qualifying result of the 2021 season the Williams Racing Team would see
George Russell qualify for the seventy one lap 2021 Austrian Grand Prix in
ninth. He would start the race in eighth after drivers in front received
penalties. For team-mate Nicholas Latifi his qualifying did not go as well
finishing in 18th. Both drivers would start the race on the medium tyre with
George having used this tyre in Q2 to set his best time. On the run up to
the grid George would complain about the rear of his car but his engineer
said that the data was OK and to go to the grid. The team would assess his
car and nothing further was reported as his mechanics waited around his car.
The grid would see Verstappen on pole from Norris and Perez third. Fourth
would be Hamilton followed by Bottas, Gasly, Tsunoda, George, Stroll and
Sainz in tenth. Of the top ten those on the medium were George, Verstappen,
Norris, Perez, both Mercedes, while Sainz was on the hard. Both AlphaTauri
cars and Stroll were on the soft. Of those outside the top ten those on the
medium was everyone bar Vettel on the soft and Raikkonen on the hard.
The grid would complete their
parade lap and with the start it would be Verstappen leading from Norris.
For Williams George would drop to 12th losing places at the start after been
boxed in by Tsunoda. But the race would see a Safety Car with Ocon at the
side of the track with a damaged car with broken front suspension.
Giovinazzi would pit switching to the hard after it was his car that had
made contact with Ocon. Nicholas was running in 17th behind Schumacher. At
the front Verstappen was leading from Norris, Perez, Hamilton, Bottas,
Gasly, Tsunoda, Stroll, Vettel and Leclerc tenth. The race would restart
with Perez stating to look for a way to pass Norris. Bottas would pass
Hamilton as we saw Perez go into the gravel dropping to tenth after he tried
to go around Norris and was squeezed off the track.
George was still running in 12th and Nicholas now 16th. The cars in fifth to
eighth were all on the soft so they would be expected to start to lose pace.
Verstappen was extending his lead over Norris now 3.4s after eight laps.
Hamilton had closed the gap to Norris with Bottas fourth with the Mercedes
pair having changed order. The first of the soft tyred cars would pit with
Tsunoda pitting. George had been passed by Sainz seeing George despite the
pit stop remaining 12th. Gasly would also pit seeing George now move up to
11th. Gasly and Tsunoda on the hard were now down in 18th and 19th. Stroll
would also pit seeing George now 10th and Nicholas 13th. Stroll on the hard
was now 19th. Nicholas was now 13th matching the pace of Alonso in front.
Vettel on the soft tyre would be passed by Ricciardo for fifth. Vettel would
also pit dropping to 14th and out on the hard tyre. George was now ninth and
Nicholas 12th.
Hamilton would pass Norris for
second as Norris was given a five second penalty for his incident with Perez
earlier in the race. Tsunoda would also be given a five second penalty for
crossing the pit entry line. He was currently 15th. Gasly would pass Nichols
for 12th. Verstappen was now leading Hamilton by 11.6s with Norris third.
Bottas was fourth followed by Ricciardo, Leclerc, Perez, Sainz, George and
Raikkonen tenth. Ricciardo would pit on lap thirty two and come back out in
12th on the hard. George was now 8th as we had both Norris and Bottas pit.
Norris would take his five second penalty seeing Bottas move ahead. George
would also pit changing to the hard coming back out in 16th. Hamilton had
also pitted followed by Verstappen seeing the top four now Verstappen,
Hamilton, Bottas and Norris all running on the hard tyre. Perez and Alonso
had also pitted seeing Nicholas now 11th. George was now 15th behind both
Aston Martins.
Nicholas would pit on lap thirty five dropping to 17th and now on the hard
tyre. George was now in 14th but the Aston's in front were on very used hard
tyres. The top four were all on new hard tyres while fifth through to
seventh were on quite used hard tyres having pitted early have started on
the soft tyre. Raikkonen would pit switching from the hard to the medium to
now be 15th. Leclerc would try to pass Perez at the same corner as had the
Norris and Perez incident. Leclerc would get pushed wide but was able to
continue. Now it was Perez's turn to get a five second penalty like Norris.
Gasly was now sixth but on well used hard tyres and if he was forced to pit
would drop behind George. Verstappen continued to lead from Hamilton,
Bottas, Norris, Sainz, Gasly, Ricciardo, Perez, Leclerc and Tsunoda tenth.
George was running in 12th and Nicholas 16th with forty six laps completed.
Gasly would pit on lap forty
eight dropping to 12th now on new hard tyres and five seconds behind George.
Stroll would pit on lap forty nine changing from well used hard tyres to new
ones. He was now 17th with Nicholas now 15th. Sainz would pit from fifth
changing from well used hard tyres to the medium. He would return in ninth
but would pass Tsunoda for eighth. George would be passed by Gasly for 11th
while Vettel would pit dropping to 14th. This would see George now back in
11th. Perez would receive a five second penalty for an incident with
Leclerc. Tsunoda would pit dropping to 14th. This would see George now
tenth. Norris would pass Hamilton for third as Hamilton pitted. He would
return remaining in fourth while we had Perez in fifth with ten seconds
worth of penalties.
Fifty six laps completed and Verstappen was now leading Bottas, Norris,
Hamilton, Perez, Ricciardo, Leclerc, Sainz, Gasly and George tenth. Nicholas
was running in 17th. Lap sixty one with a big enough margin and Verstappen
would pit retaining his lead coming out on new hard tyres. Alonso continued
to follow George as the pair would both be lapped by Verstappen. But the
fight would continue as the laps counted down. But Alonso would finally get
past seeing George drop to 11th. Sainz would pass Ricciardo for sixth as
Verstappen completed the last lap on the Austrian GP to take victory from
Bottas and Norris. Hamilton was fourth from Sainz, Perez, Ricciardo,
Leclerc, Gasly, and Alonso tenth. For Williams George would finish in 11th
and Nicholas 15th. On the last lap we would see Vettel and Raikkonen make
contact seeing the pair drop down the order. A race that had seen the
Williams of George running with the opportunity of securing the teams first
points but it was not to be as the cars around him always had that advantage
of their cars been that little bit faster. But overall a great performance
to be so close.
