The last time that the Williams Racing Team secured an on the track points scoring finish was in the 2018 Italian Grand Prix. After this race the team had only seen a tenth place finish in the 2019 German Grand Prix but this came about from a penalty to another team.

So essentially the Williams Team has had three very leans years in which they finished last in the Constructors Championship. Such were the difficult times with the team that in 2020 the team would be sold to Dorilton Capital with the Williams family leaving the business. Now in 2021 the team has made several major changes including in the management side of the team. But there has always been that pressure on the team in their failing to deliver on securing a points scoring finish despite been close on a few occasions.

Now in 2021 we have the results of the Hungarian Grand Prix and in what was a race of attrition the Williams Team would see both their drivers Nicholas Latifi and George Russell secure points scoring finishes. Prior to the race both cars had qualified close to the rear of the grid so the expectations for the race must have been fairly limited but what with a race tart under wet conditions followed by a major crash at the first corner the Williams team was able to take advantage of this and bring their cars home in the points.

Give the fact that both George and Nicholas started so far back they were able to negotiate their way through the damaged cars coming out with Nicholas in fourth with this becoming third and despite losing places as the race progressed after a Red Flag as a result of the accident Nicholas was able to focus on bringing his car home in the points finishing in eighth.

In interviews after the race Nicholas commented on his race: “I’m super happy. I think coming into this race I guess it’s what we could have hoped for but was probably not what was realistic! But the start is what sealed it all, avoiding all the carnage, and then just making the right call.

“As soon as we pulled away on the restart, within two corners I was like ‘Yeah, it’s slicks, we have to pit’. It’s kind of like well if nobody else does it and you’re the only one then you give away a good starting place, but it was clear and a lot of people also pitted.

"I just focused on my own race. In the end I knew I didn’t have the pace to stick with the guys in front when I was in P3 so was just making sure I was getting my tyres to the end. In the end I really struggled with them, I got hit quite hard. So a double points finish for the team, amazing being P8 in the championship going into the summer break, I guess that’s the best we could have hoped for this weekend!”

For team-mate George he would finish immediately behind Nicholas in ninth seeing the team secure their double points.

This result was so important for the Canadian taking pleasure from seeing the Williams Team finally score after failing to do so at all in 2020.

Nicholas added: “I haven’t been in the point scoring positions this year but George has. As a team we’ve been making improvements on the car from the start of the year to now and we’ve been knocking on the door of those points, so it’s just so nice to actually get them and reward the team for that. Obviously on my side on a personal point of view extremely satisfied, and for the team even more so because they’re all working so hard.”

"It is an amazing result for the team, and I am so happy for us.

"The race from my side was very tough to manage, obviously the start in the first corner was what sealed it for me. We struggled in qualifying yesterday, so to come away with a result like this is better than anything we could have hoped for. Overall, it is a really nice way to head into the summer break."

Sharing his joy was George who in post race interviews became quite emotional with tears even been seen as he celebrated breaking the three year drought for a team that had been at the bottom of the F1 standings in recent years..

Speaking after the race George said: "So happy and quite emotional to be honest because it means so much more than just the result today, It's three years of hard work and thinking about how many times we haven't got lucky, we truly deserve this."

"I didn't think the first points for me and for the team would mean so much. For me that last stint was probably the best stint of my whole career to be honest, fending off from Danny Ric and then getting Max behind me as well.

"Incredible and just so pleased for everyone because it's been a big old slog the last two and a half years for me, and three and a half years for the whole team. It's really, really well deserved."

One of the highlights of George's race had to be his sportsmanship as he told his engineer to prioritise his team-mates race over his.

George said: "If you need to compromise my race to help Nicky, please do it. Prioritise Nicky."

He explained afterwards: "For me, that was not even a question. I'd always prioritise the team over myself.

"We don't find both cars inside the points very often at all and the points he potentially could have scored if things had been slightly different could have been absolutely massive and stuck P8 in the championship for us which is huge.

"Just really happy for everyone."

It was later announced that after a penalty was given to the second place car that Nicholas and George would now finish in seventh and eighth positions in the race with Williams Racing now holding ten points and eighth in the Constructors Championship.
