Formula One’s Official Pre-Season test gets underway between 10-11th March, as Bahrain International Circuit hosts a final three days of track time before the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship gets underway the following week. Nicholas Latifi and Alex Albon will both return to the FW44 after a successful session in Barcelona, continuing to collect valuable data and further build upon their understanding of the new machinery. |

Head of Vehicle Performance: The main objective of the test this week is to
build on the learning from the track session in Barcelona and to start to
increase the performance of the car. We got a useful preview of the FW44 in
Barcelona and although the cars were only back in Grove for a few days
before being transported to Bahrain, we were able to do quite a lot of work
on them, which should help us to exploit the best performance this week. |

Not long to go now guys.
Loooking forward to our next big test which should show us if we are in the mix.
I think i perhaps spotted some areas on the other top 4 cars where they have maybe pinched extra millimetres of aero space and pushed the rules a little more than us.
So i should imagine our guys have spotted this and will try to do the same now..

Come on Williams.
Would love to see new things on the car but reading Capito's review of the first test, he says the time is too limited between 2 tests to go and explore other teams' ideas and see which one can help our own design philosophy so maybe we will have new bits but probably things that were under our own program since some times ago.
To bring ideas from other teams, specially when our car seems too different from other designs, it takes some time imo.

It'll be interesting to see how warmer conditions affect the bodywork. Might we see some oddly placed gills high up on the airbox or larger rear ducts or whatever.
I live in fantasy land and wish the team would just come out and effortlessly put in fast laps and become the biggest topic of the test.
Most likely they'll come out 7th or 8th fastest after the 3 days, with plenty of work to do.
We'll see.

I know that the team had been updating the front wing in Barcelona so it will not surprise me that there will be more of the same in Bahrain.
Discomfort for Albon
Alex Albon has been struggling with a heating problem in his Williams, resulting in a literal hot seat.

Formula1.com: Albon has just gone second on the C2 rubber, which is an impressive lap. Six tenths back from Leclerc, the Williams is looking pretty tidy at the moment.

I’m watching on sky. It was C4 red wall tyres that fastest laps were set on. Albon put C5’s on 10 minutes before lunch set a purple time in the first sector but then VSC was deployed so his qualifier run was disrupted.
Anthony Davidson says Williams car looks right and could be the Alpha Taurus surprise this year.
Martin Brundle on a track walk said initially the Williams looked stable and planted. Then at another corner he inferred front and rear suspension weren’t in harmony.
Brundle said all cars are stable under braking (bigger tyres), all are understeery, and all cars have to be very gentle on the throttle picking up speed as they feather the ground effects in.

As usual so many contradictory statements coming from the supposed F1 experts.
May have been a C4 soft tyre run from Albon but he did finish 0.6s ahead of Vettel in third who was on the medium C3, which is a respectable margin. But the gap to Leclerc still shows that as far as the timings are concerned there is a question hanging over the performance.
But gets back to the usual issue of how much can you compare times. In testing not much.

I think the team is running the classic program of quali runs in the morning + race sim in the afternoon. Any idea of how the first stints from Albon look like?

A quick look at the top speeds: Perez and Gasly are the fastest at 326 km/h, followed by Albon at 325 km/h and Leclerc at 322 km/h. So the Ferrari can also do straight lines and not just curves.

15:41 Lance Stroll leaps up to P6, posting a 1m35.859s - both Aston drivers in the top six as it stands. Meanwhile, Alex Albon reported a steering issue, but that seems to be more problematic on his on-board. Williams will have to check the hydraulics out.

Still looks like a very solid day, more than 100 laps and a good combination of time attack + long runs. Any idea of pace in the latter?
i don't think they're coming out again. And if they are, it's probably to verify they solved the issue, so I doubt we'll see any hot laps.

AT made its runs at the end of the day, when the track was rubberd in and the temps were lower than when Williams did its runs. Hope for a trosilec (trouble) free day tomorrow and some new parts in the car.

As little can be concluded from the days times still feel that overall it was an encouraging day for Williams.
Quickest time was 1m:33.902 with Albon 1.16s behind. From what I understand the quickest time was set on the C5 while Albon was on the C4. But not sure as to fuel and all those other factors like Albon set his time early in the day while the quickest time was set in what were more favourable conditions later in the day.
Bring on Day 2 and let's see what Latifi can do.

I think we are doing ok slowly improving this new car at our own pace maybe.
still have a niggle we lack a little raw pace but seems ok otherwise.
No idea were we stand pecking order 7th ish going on time sheets.
Best part of the day is midday to mid afternoon fast times i think.
It would be a shame if this nicely designed car of ours lacked that little bit of that raw pace.
Only the team knows that.

I saw the coverage for a bit. Most comments about the Williams were encouraging. Stable through corners and driveable to those watching trackside. Good comments on Albon too. Promising signs continue.
The Merc sidepods look inspired by some ancient aliens sh*t or something. Not graceful or elegant but certainly purposeful and extreme. Hard to copy as well, as most teams have all their radiators and cooling inside of the sidepods. But man, they're ugly AF.
That Ferrari looks comfortably fast, too. That'd be great for the sport, after such a long period of RBR and Mercedes dominance.

To my untrained eyes, we had less proposing issue compared to alot of teams.I know the fuel load can be a factor there but considering Alex was on high fuel load run and not using DRS, It was the worst case scenario I think.
Ferrari and specially AlphaTauri were horrible.Mercedes was the same through the morning session but improved as the time went by.
I think we were on par with RBR, somewhat more like Mclaren.
I don't know if they can go more aggressive with the ride height and gain some performance or maybe it's our design that prevents that much of proposing.
The car looked stable, we had less lockups compared to alot of teams but clearly we were more understeery than some midfield teams.

he is out it looks like he had a moment but today it is very gusty and lots of driver seems to be struggling.
Albon made a comment about the wind after his running yesterday. Hope this is just a general thing and not Williams specific.
They are changing the floor of Lattifi’s car, he went over the kerbs / ran wide earlier on.

Williams is the only team yet to set an outright lap time, with the mechanics carrying out a floor change in front of the TV cameras. Doubt the technical bosses will be happy with it on show but it is great for the rest of us.
I would 1000x rather have Laffite in Williams team than Latifi

09:44 Latifi and a marshal rush onto the scene with fire extinguishers - but it seems the flames burst a tyre. The Canadian takes a look at the rear end to see if everything's been put out properly.

Albon rues 'compromised' session after Latifi fire
A man with a grandstand view of Latifi's mishap was his Williams teammate Alex Albon, who happened to be in the Sky F1 commentary booth at the time.

Following a fire on Nicholas’ car, the team will assess the damage and look to understand the cause of the issue prior to any further running.
I guess spare parts will come into play and we know he was already on his second floor this morning.

From initial investigations, it appears that the issue that caused the fire was quite minor, but became visibly quite dramatic.
It is not as severe as the video footage might suggest, but there is fire damage to the rear of the car that the team need to repair.
We’ll revise our running plan once we have assessed the repair work that needs to be carried out.

Geez I wish us Aussies got the testing feed! It sucks having to read about it the next morning as it is, let alone not being able to watch the morning session cause our country has 'unique' contracts that preclude testing broadcasts!

Infact Alex had a full day running yesterday.Missed not that much, maybe a few push laps.
They will give Nicky more track time if anything is going to change.
Tomorrow will be a nice day for Williams. They will repair the car and put on all the go faster stuff. Then in the morning session Latifi will do 1h and 30 min setup running, than 30 min of quali simulations and then 1h 30 min race sim. His fastest lap will be low 1:32. All in all, he will do 101 laps.
In the PM seson, Albon will do the same, only diffirence would be less setup and more quali, his best time will be mid 1:31. then 10 mins before the end of the session he will do a run when he stops on the track becouse of lack of fuel. All in all, he will do 97 laps.

With an average race Sim of a low 1.38min on hard tyres...
I was sort of half listening to Alex Albon just now live on sky sports F1, it all sounds v good for Williams. Simple as that. He’s emphasising take opportunities early in the season…sounds like we are well set up.

Not really sure i am quite convinced JUST yet.
Reading between the lines when he says there is a good car in there but they have not been
able to find the key yet to uinlock the pace so to speak.
We have not seen any REAL turn of speed yet from the 44 and long run pace is very average again so far.
If the the Haas can do a 1:33 :2 we need a low 1:32 to convice me.

Don't get me wrong i have faith in the new leadership team and engineers back at Grove but what
i see at present is that they are not quite figured out this new car design and maybe tires, but i think and hope they will get to grips with it at some point druring the first half of the season.
I could be totally mistaken and they are running full tanks maybe.
This afternoon should give us a better idea when we see a few semi qualie runs i hope.

Geez, that sounds pretty bad... Just as I go to bed. Great. Maybe the damage to the rear yesterday is causing issues today...
Hopefully we see Alex pump in some qualifying runs to help us get a feel for where we might be in the pecking order!

I think Williams are struggling today, despite the amount of laps. Having some trouble at hairpin and car doesn't look too stable... After watching 2-3 hours of the live feed and seeing the Alfa, Alpha and Haas I fear we're not that far up the order. They've stepped it up today. The commentary crew are speculating it may be the slowest car out there.

I'm intrigued why all of the sudden we're seconds behind the next-fastest car. Car was locking up everywhere so there might be some problems. I mean, it's very weird seeing all teams do their fast laps at the end and Willliams sticking to practice starts!
I sincerely hope the team was trying to rescue whatever they could today with a compromised car, because if they weren't... wow. Could be a long season.

You guys are overreacting way too much. It's clear that the team didn't focus on doing glory runs etc. When Albon did his fastest time he was lapping within 2 tenths of Vettel and both were on C3 tyres. Even today Horner said that we were looking competitive in long runs, so just chill a bit.
Recon we will be better come race day. Turn the PU up etc. if not sell the team to VW and put it out of its misery!

The team are behind on the knowledge of the new tyres and wheels you forget that we never tested them so the last 6 days of testing we are now finding out about them other teams had already the knowledge the team also stated last year it will take time to gather the information on tyres and this is a long term turn around they don't expect to see instant results maybe in the next 2 years but I'm ever the optimist and hope through out the season we will fight on merit for points

I think it is a bit concerning that Capito referred to "qualifying simulations" being done today. If so, ultimate pace was really bad. Hopefully it is a question of finding the right setup rather than outright lack of pace from the car, but still not the kind of results we all would have liked to see.
I'm always kind of optimistic after testing but today was just weird. I can't muffle the alarm bells.
Scenario 1: The had a different program and didn't actually do any quick laps (despite the boss saying they'd do just that). Frustrating because it shows the team is in disarray.
Scenario 2: They tried the quick laps and ended up literally seconds off the pace of the next-closest competitor. Frustrating for obvious reasons.
So I find the hypothesis that the team didn't try any performance runs today utterly absurd. It's absurd if true and absurd if false. It's a lose-lose equation. I can't fathom how anyone can find comfort in that explanation.

Yeah, if you take lap times at face value it almost looks like in 2019. Hopefully that’s not the case, and the team is just not yet able to fully express the FW44 potential.

1. our qualifying pace was horrible
2. we had to run compromised equipment due to yesterday's incident
3. we're so much behind schedule that we had to make last minute changes to the program and we're the only team unable to make a qualifying run today
Neither of the 3 can be taken as positive.
The only glimpse of hope is that when I compared Albon long run pace from day 1 to Mercedes long run pace from day 2, it seemed to look pretty good and that Albon's day 1 time was already better than his day 3 time, despite the fact that his fastest lap had to be aborted due to a red flag.
But yeah, I wouldn't be shocked if we're P19 and P20 on the grid next week, unfortunately.
And don't forget Haas replaced Mazepin with Magnussen, that will make quite some difference in the context of fighting whichever team they're close to.

Back from karting so I did not get to closely follow the last day of F1 testing. But based on what I have read today sort of not sure how to view Williams Bahrain test. Pace to still somewhat off but who knows when it comes to test sessions.

The team have made it clear they are struggling to understand the tyres and its my guess that they may not yet be switching on or getting the best from the softest compound tyres in quali trim. I'm not certain but williams tyre issues are backed up by Albon making a joke that latifis flaming breaks were an attempt to solve low rear tyre temperatures. This might explain the large discrepancy between christian horner singling them out for good long stint pace, and others comparing outright single laptime. It seemed to be a theme last year that red bull worked their tyres harder to extract more tyre temp and performance over a single lap relative to Mercedes before suffering worse tyre deg in the race.
Id take race pace over quali pace any day, esp given the feedback that its probably going to be easier to race this year. Albon knows how to overtake.

It may be a lot harder to get temperature into the rear tyres on low fuel than high fuel as there is less load going through them.

First and foremost i would like to say that i still have 100% confidence in the new leasership at Williams ,owners and design team and engineers ..
I now think at long last we have a bunch of some very clever people at the Williams helm and they will do us proud over the coming years.
I think yesterday Williams altered there pre planned schedule after losing all of Tuesday one 1/3 rd
of there test time here at Bahrain, and concentrated solely on the new wheels and tire learming/data gathering..
I think the only reason they put Albon in the car for 18 laps was maybe to check the car after it,s major fire damage and maybe test a setup change before Lattifi started his all day tire data gathering session.
It has now been confirmed we are behind the curve regarding understanding the new size wheel and tires and that could take us up till mid season to get a full handle on but this will not stop further development of the new package just slow it down to some degree whilst we learn..
The new car looks the part and with the Merc engine and Gearbox we should have one of the best
power and drive packages under the hood.

My guess as things stand right now: in the fight to get into q2 but probably out in q1. In the fight to get p10 in the race. But the pecking order will change rapidly as team understands their package and as each team introduces crucial updates.

I just think Christian Horners word’s hold the most weight. He said Williams could spring a surprise based on long run pace.
Let’s be honest, the journalists / technical commentators don’t have the data and analysts of the major teams. When a team principle says Williams could be the surprise of the year I take that comment on board.
In no way does that infer we are in the bottom two teams, it infers we are midfield in my opinion.

I think you are cherrypicking comments made offhand by a biased competitor. You are aware that Horner has one of his employees driving for our team?
I'm not saying he's completely wrong. I just don't think he's a realiable source at this point.
I know we missed the new wheel and tire test with a mule car ,but Pirelli have provided us with all
the relevant data from that test for our engineers to work with.
So we have not been totally blind and guessing with the new dimentions and effects.

I think hope that unless our car was lighting up the timing screens not many of the rival teams would bother checking our performance to closely..

Haas for me did glory runs ,Alfa Unknown, Aston seem to struggle, McLaren seem to be struggling in Bahrain so who knows roll on next Sunday

I'm no engineer, but based on what engineers have said in the past, to switch on tyres can be as simple as a different set up, but sometimes may need some aero or suspension changes. It's a fairly common problem.
It is pretty clear we are not top 10 and more like bottom 5 which is mega disappointing but having said that the testing fire ruined our program. Lots of work to do to recover. (Yet again!)
Yes agreed bottom 5 as we start of the new season but that is were we was expected to be if we can finish the season 7th that is the target 6th is a bridge to far this season with only maybe one decent driver.
If at some stage this season we can see promise/pace emerging from this new car and Albon able to capitalise on it then fine.
I do not expect much from Lattif to be honest all due respect.
Again we just need to see pace from this new car and not focus to much on finishing positions and points on the board. at this stage

I've made a small analysis of long run pace from the Bahrain tests and it really doesn't look good for Williams. We've had the worst long run pace by a margin.

But from all the other bits of info we have about our car you could be right, i am sad to say.

More conclusions from my analysis if anyone is interested:
- Red Bull looks the strongest team
- Mercedes have not mastered their Bahrain's package, yet
- Aston Martin fly a bit under the radar, they seem to have strong pace
My analysis might be very inaccurate because I just settled for some very rough estimates to save myself work and was happy with having a very general idea instead of running a detailed analysis.

Williams has absolutely no reason whatsoever to sandbag. I makes no sense. I think we got all the team could muster. Could be a tough year. Or maybe not. Who knows.
I'll say it again. Whoever builds a car that is responsive to updates will fare better this season. Hope that applies to Williams.

The idea was that every team would surely run with a full tank at some point (probably a lot of race simulations on the last day) so my best chance was to find that full tank run for every team and compare.
Unfortunately, Williams had a lot of laps in the 1:43's, sometimes even in 1:44's. Most of the teams would never have that slow of a stint ever. Even Bottas would keep his slowest runs in the 1:42's or below (Zhou tended to be MUCH slower than him, though). Red Bull would rarely exceed 1:39's and Aston Martin 1:40's.
I would mostly look at the day 3 but knowing what had happened to Williams, I also took a look at what happened on day 1 and Albon was still significantly slower than Bottas for example on his long runs.
Of course there could be other explanations but it doesn't look promising for Williams.
I have read and listened to so many views and opinions on the pace of the 44 and never have i been so confused on were we stand.
But if a car can light up the timing screens you usually get a glimpse at some point were as with the 44 we have not seen anything at all to indicate that.

Red Bull did a 9 lap stint in the low 38s on day 3. If Williams did representative laptimes in the 43s and 44s then that would suggest we are 5-6 seconds a lap slower than what we expect to be the fastest car out there. That would also mean the car is significantly slower than the diabolical FW42 of 2019 but nothing out there tells me it's anywhere near that bad.
We need some work to do as honestly there is a lot of lap time that we can get in this car just by having a better balance but its hard to know is it the tyres, is it the car, the stiffness of the car.

Old news, he said that through the bahrain test.Even without his words, the writting was on the wall when we were the only team to not participate in those tests.You can't miss a valuable test and get away with it.

Yeah, I think let's reserve judgement for a few races at least. Get some serious miles on the car in different surfaces and temperatures. Tyres are so crucial to get right and we are no doubt on the back foot but to me the car looks good so that will be our first task.

His answer was admirable, saying that when you are struggling, you are never 100% confident you have the best solution and they were open minded but that making a sidepod bigger doesn't require any major internal repackaging. Their problem seems to be how to solve porpoising without removing bits of floor and slowing the car down, and like williams seem to give themselves 5 or 6 races to learn and fix it. He said the key thing was not to panic.
