Austrian GP: Difficult Sprint for Williams Racing

July 9 2022

The results of the 2022 Austrian GP Sprint event would see the Williams Racing Team finish in somewhat disappointing 16th and 18th positions. Alex Albon would finish ahead of team-mate Nicholas Latifi in a race that saw both drivers start on the soft tyre. This move may have been costly for them as they did not really gain from such a selection. On top of this Alex would also get a 5s penalty for an incident involving Norris. Overall a difficult race for the team especially there was a view that Alex would be able to use his 11th grid position to advanatge, something that did not happen.

With the Williams Racing Team seeing their drivers start the twenty four lap Sprint for the 2022 Austrian Grand prix in 11th and 19th with Alex Albon leading team-mate Nicholas Latifi. On pole for the Sprint would be Verstappen followed by Leclerc, Sainz, Russell, Ocon, Magnussen, Schumacher, Alonso, Hamilton, and Gasly tenth. Alex's grid position would see him behind Hamilton for the start. As for tyres the medium was the tyre of choice with only the Williams going onto the soft joined by Vettel and Stroll.

The field would move away from the grid but Alonso's car still had its tyre blankets on it after an electrical issue with his car delayed work on it. He would have to start from the pit lane and the rest of the field would complete their parade lap but Zhou would stop his car with his engine stopped. The start will be aborted but Zhou would get his car restarted forcing him to start from the pit lane. Alonso would retire in the pit lane not making the start. The race would be one lap shorter.

The grid would form up and with the start it would be Verstappen leading from Sainz and Leclerc. Leclerc was able to get past Sainz while for Williams they were running in tenth and 17th. Gasly had spun at Turn one possibly involved with Hamilton with Alex very close to hitting Gasly. Russell was fourth followed by Ocon, Magnussen, Schumacher, Perez, Bottas, and Hamilton now tenth. Alex had drooped to 11th while Nicholas was now 16th. Alex would have a moment with Norris seeing the McLaren run wide which would see Alex under investigation.

Norris would pass Alex for 11th seeing the Williams now 12th while Nicholas was now 17th. Ricciardo would also get past Alex seeing Alex now 13th. At the front Verstappen was leading comfortably as Alex got a five second penalty for forcing Norris wide. Nicholas was now 19th while on lap twelve Vettel would go off after making contact with Albon as he tried to pass the Williams. Alex's 5s penalty would see him drop down to 18th. Lap seventeen and Verstappen was still comfortably leading from Leclerc, Sainz, Russell, Perez, Ocon, Magnussen, Schumacher, Hamilton, and Bottas tenth.

Alex and Nicholas were running in 13th and 18th as the Sprint drew to a close. Hamilton had been able to pass Schumacher for eighth as Verstappen finished the Sprint taking victory fr0om Leclerc and Sainz. Russell was fourth followed by Perez, Ocon, Magnussen, Hamilton, Schumacher and Bottas in tenth. With the five second penalty Alex would drop to 16th and Nicholas would finish in 18th. Not the result that Williams Racing was hoping for I would imagine. Now it will all come down to what they can extract from Sundays race.
