After forty
three years owned by the Williams family the Williams Racing Team would find
itself been sold to Dorilton Capital in late 2020. With the change in
ownership the team commenced on a process of pushing ahead with plans to
return the team back to their successful ways. With the departure of Frank
and Claire Williams we would move through the leadership of Jost Capito but
in 2023 the team announced the hiring of James Vowles from Mercedes as new
Team Principal.
And it was with this announcement that we would see James commence his
leadership of the team and the implementation of wide sweeping changes right
through the organisation and after just one season under his leadership we
would see the team make what were steps forward finishing seventh in the
2023 Constructors championship.
So here we are in the middle of the 2024 F1 Summer break and the Williams
team currently is ninth in the Constructors championship after what could be
described as a frustrating start to the season with just four points been
scored by the team.
But at the start of the season James had outlined his view of the future
plans for the team covering such areas revitalising the teams
infrastructure, the hiring of new staff and bringing forward the question of
the second driver for 2025. His plans were extensive and long term in their
scope. It was apparent that under James's leadership the team has a
ambitious set of goals.
One part of this was the re-signing of Alexander Albon, who committed to a
long term contract with the team based on in large part to his understanding
of the future plans that James was able to present to him.
Adding on to this was the signing of Carlos Sainz, who will join the team
from Ferrari in 2025. One would expect he was also convinced by the scope of
the plans that James was able to present to him seeing him also commit to a
long term contract. So in 2025 the team will have one of the strongest
driver line-ups of Albon and Sainz.
Speaking on the signing of Albon and Sainz James made it clear that having
such a strong line-up is how they will push the team forward not only on the
track but also off it.
“The real commercial benefit of all Formula 1 teams, is just performance,”
Vowles said.
“If you make your car quicker, or if you have drivers that push your car, or
drivers pushing each other and pushing the car, that in turn provides you
championship solutions and sponsorship income.
“That is the secret sauce of how to run a Formula 1 team, fundamentally. So,
treat it like a startup. You’ve got to put your finances into a driver, two
drivers, really, in the circumstance that you know will be pushing the team
forward.
“It’s not like you have immediately, overnight, the phone’s ringing and
someone’s offering you 20 million. That’s not how it takes place. But it is
part of the journey that makes our way through.”
The signing of these two drivers fitted into the long term plans that James
has being implementing for the team. But beyond the drivers James has also
been focusing on the development of the Williams cars in such a way that he
is looking beyond simply coming up with next years model but wants the team
to implement a structure and culture that allows them to look many years
ahead.
In interviews regarding the team's future James spoke of how the team is
starting to adapt to the idea of looking well ahead.
James said: "Our car is not a '24 car in the wind tunnel, it's been '25 for
quite a few months and that won't surprise you."
He continued: "I want to get the '26 car in the tunnel as soon as possible,
but have a sense of the '25 season. That fundamentally what we are doing,
everything we are doing is basically forward borrowing against getting
everything as quickly as possible into '26. Within our team, we've separated
the team out now with the additional resource. We have team members focused
on '24, '25, '26 and a little bit on '27 as well at the same time. And
that's a change for Williams."
"That's a change for Williams, we were more used to working one year in
advance or even on the current year. And as you can imagine, when you do
that within the organisation, it takes time to adapt.
"Nothing I've told you here is special sauce; Mercedes does it, Red Bull
does it, but for Williams, it's a large departure."
But even with James's plans for the future the remaining races of the 2024
season will be crucial for Williams as it seeks to recover from their poor
start to 2024 and build momentum for the future.
But there have been some questions as to the desire for immediate success
weighed up against James more long term plans. After what was a successful
2023 season to see the team appear to fall away in 2024 scoring just four
points has been a difficult thing for not only fans but drivers and team
members to cope with.
But this question of some short term difficulties as the team transitions to
a more long term approach is something that James is “comfortable” dealing
with and is sure that his approach will bare even more significant results
in the years ahead.
In an interview with Motorsport.com James outlined his vision and why it is
needed.
He said: “We have to go back a little bit and here’s why.”
“It’s simply because I’m investing in 2026. I’ve got to do the
transformation. To do a transformation means that I’m asking individuals to
compromise. That’s okay. I’m completely comfortable with it.
“Even in the factory the other week, there was a question over ‘are we
really happy spending this amount of time working on the future, to have to
compromise now?’ And I’ll say the same to you, I am 100 per cent sure it is
right, because I don’t want to be 7th, 8th or 9th.
“I want ’26 to be good whereas the others around me in the pit lane are
focused on ’24 and ’25. Not everyone can work on the ’26 car but so long as
we are doing the right thing to close the gap, if the worst was to happen,
I’m still okay with it. As long as I can see progress in the systems
development for 2026 taking place, I know that I can translate that into a
much higher success rate.
“Do I feel more pressure? No. Because I feel really content for this as a
multi-year plan about five years. The board knows it, the investors know and
I am very comfortable.”
But even with James's long term view of moving the team forward there is
still a degree of acknowledgement that the 2024 car is not where he wants it
to be.
He said: "I think there was more we could have achieved if the car was on
the weight limit. We're still overweight today, but there are updates
coming. We have updates coming after the summer break. I hope in Zandvoort,
and then I hope again in Baku or the race after Baku, something that brought
up, which I think is Singapore. In our worlds now, in the world of Formula
1, they're big steps."
James continues to be optimistic that Williams can achieve more points
results this season.
"What I can tell you is there's substantive numbers that should add up to us
being back in a position of fighting for points and it's achieved for a
number of things. It's aerodynamic updates, you're going to see a suspension
update, and you're going to see weight coming off the car. So it's
fundamentally three core roots whereby we're doing this we're also investing
in '25." James added.
Even though he is confident in the impact of these upgrades, James is also
careful having seen a few other teams introduce upgrades only to see them
fail to achieve the desired results.
James explained: "In the world of Formula 1 they're big steps, but my
reticence is you've now watched RB who had an update to take it off,
Mercedes had an update but took it off.”
“You don't normally see that, teams have confidence in what they do."
Coming off a successful 2023 the Williams team has been able to attract some
new sponsors such as Komatsu and MyProtein. To involve these companies in
the long term vision that James has is such an important aspect contributing
to the success of the team.
James explained the situation regarding sponsors.
James said: “What I can say is, we have existing sponsors that we’ve been
talking to for six months.” Vowles said.
“What it does show, though, to sponsors is the message we’ve been giving
them.
“They know a little bit more than you will know, for obvious reasons,
they’re part of our journey."
“But they can see now that when you give that information to others, they
join the journey, too. And actually, for me, that’s the biggest gain of
things.”
Vowles concluded on his performance-driven stance being the reason that both
Sainz and sponsors want to join the Williams project.
“You’re asking why Carlos joined. He knows more than you do, and he can see
it, and he believes in it. And that’s the main thing.
“I’ve been consistent on that message. And sponsors are the same. So, it
doesn’t change everything overnight, but it will lead to more success in the
future. I’m confident of it. But it’s a performance-driven aspect.”
So with just two weeks before
Formula One returns after their summer break the future of Williams Racing
is one of can we turn the 2024 season around but at the same time make
progress in our plans and developments for 2025 and beyond. Like all F1
teams success on the track does come down to so many factors from their
engineering staff though to their ability to react quickly to name just a
few. But I do feel that James is targeting these areas as part of his long
term vision.
There was a time where I was
uncertain about the plans that James had put forward but now with such
amazing events as the signing of Sainz and the addition of experienced and
talented staff I am far more confident that his vision of the future will be
one that will see the team again be successful. Successful not just in terms
of the occasional points but well beyond that to include podiums, race wins
and even championships. |
