Berger to leave now

It was previously reported that BMW Motorsport Director Gerhard Berger would complete his contract with BMW and leave in September 2003. Now it has been announced that he is stepping down from BMW Motorsport with immediate effect.

In the Friday Press Conference, after telling of his enjoyment of the new Friday format, Berger revealed that this Grand Prix would be his last appearance in the day to day F1 business. Berger said:  “The situation is that I have a contract until September but we decided, after this race, to go out of the daily business."

Berger will still be making appearances but in a lessening role. He added: “I'm still going to be involved in some strategic questions so, as Frank likes to talk with me and we do our negotiations together for the future, I'm still helping and I am coming from time to time to races but basically I'm dropping out after this race.”
