Substantial structural change

One member of the WilliamsF1 staff not to make the trip to Malaysia was Technical Director Patrick Head. The reason behind this was due to the fact that the team has started a process of "substantial structural change" including the laying off of several members of the teams design staff.

It was revealed that the team had dismissed two of their design personnel, Jason Somerville and Nick Allcock. Head's decision to miss the race was centred around the need to improve the performance of the new FW25, a car that has yet to show any great potential.

In Malaysia even though Ralf Schumacher was to finish fourth he was well over a minute behind the winner. The winner Kimi Raikkonen was driving an updated 2002 model McLaren where as Ralf was in a 2003 model car.

Even Juan Pablo Montoya has admitted that the car is yet to perform as expected. He said: "We expected our new car to be mega quick when it came out and it is quicker than last year's, but it's not that much quicker. The design, everything, is much better, but the performance hasn't come yet."

As for the changes at WilliamsF1 Frank Williams said: "Jason and Nick were 'let go', as the Americans kindly say. There's been a substantial structure change and it's still going on."

In respect of Patrick Head Williams added: "Patrick said he won't be coming to this race because he needs to put more effort of his own into making our car quicker. Clearly, when he's away for four or five days, he then has no direct input into the creativity at Grove."

If the WilliamsF1 team wants to challenge Ferrari, McLaren, and even Renault they are going to have to make major improvements in the new car. With the input of Patrick Head maybe the team can do just that.
