| The second
day of testing for the BMW WilliamsF1 team at the Silverstone circuit would
see Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time but for Juan Pablo his day would
be ruined when he was to suffer a major accident at the Becketts corner.
Juan
Pablo left the track at high speed crashing into the barriers, ending his
running for the day as his car could not be repaired. With the damage to his
car he will not be taking part in the final day of testing. Thankfully he
was not injured in the accident. On his official web site Juan Pablo
discussed his accident.
Juan Pablo said: “When I turned right for the second Becketts the car was
over steering a bit and suddenly it was gone. I think I was doing around 300
(kilometers per hour) when I went off and then I crashed into the tyres at
about 205-270. The HANS worked really well and actually hold my head because
the impact was very hard. I ended up underneath the tyre barrier and it took
some time for me to get out of the car. Now I’m fine. Just a bit sore in my
back and elbows.”
He added: “The car was very good. Both days I was quickest and the car is
improving all the time. Today I went to visit the factory to see how things
are going.”
The day was again dry and
sunny allowing the team to continue with its test programme of setup work,
tyre testing, and reliability testing.
Juan Pablo Montoya would only
complete twenty eight laps of the circuit, with his best lap time been a
1m21.410, this been the fastest. This was almost one second quicker than
Jordan's Ralph Firman who set a time of 1m:22.383s.
Juan Pablo was again joined by Marc Gene. Marc spent his day focusing on
tyre and chassis testing. He would set a best time of 1m:22.727, completing
forty two laps.
WilliamsF1 Test Team Manager Tim Newton spoke of the days testing. He said:
“Part of the purpose of testing is to discover the car’s boundaries prior to
lining it up on the grid for a Grand Prix. Fortunately, Juan is perfectly ok
but the car requires some work before it hits the race track again. Not
withstanding Juan’s accident, we’re happy with today’s progress. Positive
steps were made with regards to chassis and gearbox development so we’re
looking forward to tomorrow’s session when Marc will concentrate on some
long distance running.“ |
