For the BMW WilliamsF1 team a second for Montoya was a good result but it could
have been better had Ralf not gone off the track and damaged the nose of his
FW24 requiring an early pitstop. But it was a day in which neither driver Ralf
or Juan Pablo could have challenged Michael Schumacher.
The
Spanish Grand Prix was expected to be a two stop race for most drivers, with the
circuit been very hard on tyres. So as the cars would pull away for their
formation lap Rubens Barrichello was left on the grid. He would be pushed into
the pits and after a time his engine was once again running and we would start
from the pits.
The start would see Michael Schumacher leading Ralf Schumacher, Montoya,
Raikkonen, Button and Coulthard. But for Barrichello he would not get away and
Barrichello would get out of the car into retirement. Michael would start to
pull away from brother Ralf, with a gap of 2.2 seconds after two laps.
Jaguar driver de la Rosa would spin off into the gravel while under braking. So
after three laps the order was Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, Montoya,
Raikkonen, Button, Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld. For McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen his
race would finish early after he lost his rear wing on the main straight. Kimi
would retire in the pits. Lap five and Michael lead fro Ralf, Montoya, Button,
Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld, Massa. Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella would also
retire in the pits. The gap between the Schumacher brothers would grow to 5.1
seconds at the end of lap 6, with Montoya 2.7 seconds behind his team-mate.
Michael
Schumacher's lead would grow to be over 6.6 seconds over Ralf, with Montoya
third, Button fourth ahead of Coulthard. Coulthard was already 14.6 seconds
behind Schumacher. Jarno Trulli was sixth ahead of Heidfeld and Massa. Michael
Schumacher would set the first of many fastest laps with a lap time of
1m:22.299. Lap eleven and the order was Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher,
Montoya, Button, Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld, and Massa.
Jordan driver Takuma Sato would spin off on the exit of the fast right hander in
the middle sector, ending Jordan's day. We would see another fastest lap from
Michael, followed by another fastest lap of 1m:22.196 for Michael Schumacher on
Lap fourteen. Michael would continue to set fastest laps with a lap of
1m:22.045.
Michael was now 15.2 seconds ahead Ralf. For Renault's Jenson Button he was to
drop back slowly from Montoya with the gap already out to ten seconds. Another
fastest lap for Michael with a lap of 1m:21.732. The gap to Ralf was now 20
seconds. Michael's superiority in the race was plain to see.
Ralf
Schumacher and Jenson Button would be the first of the leaders to pit, followed
by Montoya, with a stop of 10.4 seconds. Michael Schumacher would pit next,
taking on tyres and fuel, stopping for 9.4 seconds. Felipe Massa and
Heinz-Harald Frentzen would also pit. Coulthard had not been in the pits and was
running second. Disaster would hit Ralf Schumacher, as we was to ran wide on the
exit of the fast right hander in the middle sector and damaged his nose. He
would pit and Williams team would change his nose. He would return in thirteenth
position.
With 35 laps to go the order was Michael Schumacher leading Montoya, Button,
Coulthard, Trulli and Heidfeld. Coulthard was right behind Jenson Button but
could not pass him. The battle would allow Trulli in fifth to close up to
Coulthard. But Coulthard would pass Button at the end of the main straight.
Michael Schumacher would lap Ralf. Michael was about thirty seconds ahead of
Montoya. Jarno Trulli would pass team-mate Button, as it looked like Button was
having some problem with his car. The order after thirty-eight laps was Michael
Schumacher, Montoya, Coulthard, Trulli, Button, Heidfeld, Massa, Panis,
Frentzen, and Villeneuve.
Nick Heidfeld would catch up to Button, who was not able to keep up his earlier
speed. Ralf would pit for the second time where his mechanics would change the
cars nose again, this time the stop was only 10.8 seconds. Jenson Button and
Nick Heidfeld would both come into the pits at the same time and Nick Heidfeld's
crew was faster and he would overtake Button in the pitlane. Jarno Trulli would
come in for his second stop. BAR's Olivier Panis would pit, a stop of 9.6
seconds, but he would park his car at the exit of pitlane with suspected
transmission problems.
Montoya would come into the pits but he would appear to leave his pit too early
hitting a mechanic and the fuel man. It looks like a mechanic was slightly
injured. A reply would show that the mechanics foot was below the left front
tyre. Montoya would stay in second while Schumacher would arrive at the Ferrari
pit. Michael would have no problems with his stop.
Michael
Schumacher would once again set a new fastest lap with a lap of 1m:20.355.
Schumacher's fastest lap was 1.4 seconds faster than Montoya's quickest lap,
such was the dominance of the F2002. The top six were Michael Schumacher,
Montoya, Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld, and Button. Michael would lead Montoya by
41 seconds. Information from the pits was that Button was having problems with
the engine. There were only twelve laps to go and Michael had already dropped
his pace now to bring his car home.
Jenson Button would continue to lose time and Massa and Frentzen would finally
go past him. Button would get even slower as he drew closer to the end of the
race. This would mean that both Sauber's are in the points now, with Heidfeld in
fifth and Massa sixth. So with seven laps to go the order was Michael
Schumacher, Montoya, Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld, Massa, Frentzen, Villeneuve,
Button, McNish, Ralf Schumacher, and Mika Salo.
But
now Jarno Trulli would also have problems and lose speed allowing Massa and
Frentzen to pass the Italian. For Button he race would come to an unfortunate
end when he would halt out on the circuit. Trulli would drop down to eighth. As
for the leader Michael Schumacher this would be his fourth win in five races. So
as he entered his final lap one could only think of his domination of the race.
Pole position, fastest lap and a start to finish win, the ideal way to enjoy a
Grand Prix weekend.
So Michael Schumacher would cross the finish line and win the Spanish GP, but
for the BMW WilliamsF1 team Montoya would score six important points to keep his
championship hopes alive. Coulthard would finish in third. As for Ralf he would
stop on the final lap with engine failure. Not that it mattered as he was only
eleventh. Out of a possible fifty points Michael has scored forty-four. The
other teams must becoming very concerned about what to do to challenge Michael
and the Ferrari team. |
