Should Ralf help Juan Pablo?

With the 2003 Formula One season having just four remaining races the BMW WilliamsF1 team has the difficult issue of who of their drivers should they focus on in their fight for the Drivers championship.

After Juan Pablo's victory in the German Grand Prix, and Ralf's retirement, we are faced with the situation of having Juan Pablo just six points behind championship leader Michael Schumacher. For Ralf he is eighteen points behind his brother. Both drivers still have a chance to secure the championship, if ever so slim for Ralf, but should the team make a decision that admits that only one driver has a chance of winning the championship. Combined into this question is the issue of team orders and the FIA's banning of their use.

Up to this point both Ralf and Juan Pablo have been able to race each other.  Does Ralf now play a supporting role in the four remaining races. Will their roles change at the next race in Hungary or does it only occur when one driver has no chance of winning the title.

If the team does impose some from of ruling to favour one driver over the other Juan Pablo has no doubt that Ralf will play the correct role.

Juan Pablo commented on his views of when any guides would be imposed by the team. He said: "If one is part of a team, you cannot be selfish. It is in our contract, and it is signed for a reason. Not to obey the contract could destroy the career of a driver.

"If I had to help him, I'd have to. It is the result of a whole season of hard work and we must respect that. Personally I hope the orders aren't given.

"For now, we are equal. While Ralf has a mathematical chance, there are not going to be any team orders."

A lot will be riding on the result of the next race in Hungary. If Ralf slips further back in the points gap to his brother and the reverse happens for Juan Pablo it will be hard for Ralf to maintain his position that while he is in with a chance the team should not play favourites.

As for BMW's Dr Mario Theissen he supports the view that at this stage it would not be appropriate to ask Ralf to support Juan Pablo, but that this may change. Theissen said: “It’s just more difficult to keep two cars at the front. Michael Schumacher is still in a great position, but Juan Pablo’s chances are looking bright too now.”

Dr Theissen added: “We want to be world champion and we have got the chance to make an end to the Ferrari dominance. Juan Pablo is ready for the title.”

As for the WilliamsF1 team it is very much the case that the team will not use team orders. WilliamsF1 technical Director Patrick Head explained: “Our drivers are free to race, yet not in a way that might threaten the team result."

As for Juan Pablo's views of winning the championship he feels that his chances are looking good.

Juan Pablo added: "The probability is good, but it won't be easy. I can't say that I am champion until I win it. If I win, yes it would be cool. And if not I can say I tried. Five races ago no one believed in me. Now I'm everyone's favourite. Yes I'm going to try to win, but there's still a long way to go."

As for the Hungarian Grand Prix Juan Pablo is confident that the FW25 will be a competitive package at this circuit.

He said: "The last two years we have had many problems with the balance of the car and the tyres. This year the car suits me much better. I'm going to approach Hungary just as I approach any other weekend, to 'set up' the car and see what happens. The chances that we do well are very high. The million dollar question is how will the tyres perform, and in all honesty they should do it well."
