Hungarian GP Saturday Qualifying

The final qualifying would see Ralf and Juan Pablo finish second and fourth on the grid. Both drivers came away from the session confident of their chances come the race. For both of them it was satisfying in that their championship rivals are behind them on the grid with championship leader Michael Schumacher down in eighth.

On a track where it is difficult to pass their grid positions give Ralf and Juan Pablo a big advantage. The only negative aspect of their grid positions is that both will start on the dirty side of the grid.

The session would not see Ralph Firman take to the track as been involved in a heavy crash earlier in the day. Zsolt Baumgartner will take his place. It will be Zsolt who would take to the track first setting a time of 1m:26.678.

Ralf SchumacherNext would be Toyota's Cristiano da Matta with the Brazilian setting a time of 1m:23.982. For Minardi's Nicolas Kiesa he would run wide into turn nine and would set the slowest time, a 1m:28.907, 4.9 slower than da Matta. Next would be Minardi team-mate Jos Verstappen setting a time of 1m:26.423, to put him in second.

Next would be Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella. He would equal da Matta's sector one time, but sets fastest sector two time finishing the lap fastest with a time of 1m:23.726, 0.256 ahead of da Matta. The next group of runners would be Justin Wilson, Jacques Villeneuve, Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen and Heinz Harald Frentzen.

Jaguar's Justin Wilson would begin his qualifying lap setting a time of 29.6sec in sector one, ending with a time of 1m:23.660 to take first position. Next was BAR's Jacques Villeneuve
who would finish fourth with a time of 1m:24.100. Team-mate Jenson Button would begin his fast lap and he would beat his team-mate moving into third with a time of 1m:23.847.

MontoyaMcLaren's Kimi Raikkonen would set the fastest time in sector one, again in sector two, finishing fastest with a time of 1m:22.742, a second quicker than Wilson. Next would be Sauber's Heinz Harald Frentzen. But his lap would be disappointing ending only seventh fastest with a time of 1m:24.569, 1.8 seconds slower than Raikkonen.

For Nick Heidfeld he would run wide into turn 2, and is 0.3 down on Raikkonen's time in sector one finishing ahead of team-mate Frentzen to move into second with a time of 1m:23.621. Now it would be the turn of championship leader Michael Schumacher. Michael would begin his flying lap but he could only manage second, 0.013 behind Kimi.

Now it was the turn of BMW WilliamsF1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya. He would show his intentions early by setting the fastest sector one time of 28.9 seconds, and would finish in pole with a time of 1m:22.180, half a second faster than Raikkonen. Coming out next would be Toyota's Olivier Panis. He would set a time of 29.1 in sector one, ending in fourth with a time of 1m:23.369. Olivier was way ahead of team-mate Da Matta.

Renault's Fernando Alonso would begin his qualifying lap and was quickly on the pace to beat Montoya. he would finish with a time of 1m:21.688 to snatch pole from Juan Pablo. Alonso was nearly half a second faster than Montoya. Barrichello was next on track. Rubens would go fastest in both sector one and sector two but would lose time in the final sector to finish third with an identical time of Juan Pablo's. As Juan Pablo set his time first he is given the higher grid position.

Ralf SchumacherFor McLaren's David Coulthard he would match Alonso's sector one time but he would lose a second in sector two to finish only in sixth just behind Michael Schumacher. The final three runners would be Webber followed by Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli.

For Mark Webber he would be up 0.1 on Alonso's time through sector one, finishing in second. This would see Juan Pablo pushed onto the second row. Now it was Ralf's turn and he would go fastest through sector one, but he would lose time in the final two sectors to finish in second, with a time of 1m:21.944. The final runner was Jarno Trulli. Could he match his team-mates time. Through sector one he would match Alonso's time but suffering from oversteer would lose time in sector two. He would finish his lap way down in sixth almost a second slower than his team-mate.
