The Hungarian GP would see Juan Pablo and Ralf finish in 3rd and 4th. The race was won by Renault's Alonso. For the WilliamsF1 drivers it was a race of missed opportunities, Ralf spinning on lap one and Juan Pablo not matching the pace of the leaders. But WilliamsF1 leads the constructors fight.

Hungarian GP - missed opportunity for WilliamsF1

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the Hungarian Grand Prix would be a race of missed opportunities. With both drivers qualifying well they were let down by what could only be described as average race performances. Both drivers were to make starts that would see them lose places, but they both were on the dirty side of the track. Ralf would spin at Turn three and spend the rest of the race recovering back to fourth. While Juan Pablo was not able to match the performances of Alonso and Raikkonen, finishing in third behind this pair.

MontoyaThe start of the Hungarian Grand Prix would see Alonso make a great getaway but the opposite was the case for both of the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers. Alonso was leading Webber, Barrichello. Juan Pablo was down in eighth.

For Ralf his race would get from bad to worse when he would spin at turn three, probably helped by another car. Ralf would drop way down the order acing an afternoon of working his way back to the front. He was nineteenth.

Alonso was quickly building a gap to the cars behind, on lap two he would set a time of 1m:25.490. On lap three Barrichello would cut the chicane while trying to overtake Webber. Rubens would slow to let Webber pass him, but Raikkonen and Trulli would use the opportunity to pass the Ferrari.

Lap four and a new fastest lap for Alonso, a 1m:24.979. His lead over Webber and Raikkonen was out to ten seconds. Another fastest lap for the Spaniard, a 1m:23.984 on lap six.

Ralf would continue to move back up towards the leaders, passing Panis. He was now behind Wilson. By lap seven Alonso had a 15 seconds lead. Lap nine and Ralf would pass Wilson for eleventh. The following lap and Wilson would pit for his first stop, indicating a three stop strategy. Lap eleven and Ralf would pass Villeneuve for tenth.

Alonso would pit from the lead on lap thirteen, a six second stop. He would be joined by Webber. Raikkonen would move into the lead. Ralf's progress back to the front would see him pass Heidfeld going into Turn one on lap fifteen. Ralf was now just behind Schumacher and Montoya.

Ralf SchumacherOn lap fifteen Villeneuve would retire in his garage, while Raikkonen would pit allowing Alonso to move back into the lead. Trulli and Panis would also stop, joined by Barrichello and Montoya on lap sixteen. Juan Pablo was to have some front wing taken off during his stop. Ralf would stop the next lap but it was a slow one seeing him come back out behind his brother. By lap twenty Alonso was still out in front with his lead back out to 23.6 seconds. Raikkonen was second.

Lap twenty one and Barrichello would slow allowing Juan Pablo to move into fifth as everyone went pass the Ferrari. Ralf was further down the order in seventh. Rubens would crash into the barriers at Turn one after what looked like a suspension failure. His left rear wheel left the car as he came up to the corner.

Lap twenty one and Alonso was leading Raikkonen, Webber, Trulli, Montoya, Michael Schumacher, Ralf and Coulthard. The following lap would see Sauber's Frentzen make his first stop. By lap twenty four Juan Pablo would be pressuring Trulli looking for away past. Ralf was also putting pressure on Michael.

Lap thirty and Fisichella would stop his car on the grass with an engine problem. On the same lap Ralf would overtake Michael. Alonso would pit, returning to the track still in the lead. Team-mate Trulli would stop on lap thirty three. The next lap and it would be the turn of Raikkonen to stop, returning just behind the WilliamsF1 drivers. Panis would retire on the following lap while Ralf would pit. Juan Pablo would set the fastest lap with a time of 1m:22.640.

Lap thirty five and the top eight were Alonso, Montoya, Raikkonen, Ralf, Coulthard, Webber, and Heidfeld. Juan Pablo would pit on lap thirty six. He would come out and on lap thirty eight set a new fastest lap, a 1m:22.095. Neither Michael or Coulthard have come in for their second pitstop, indicating a possible two stop strategy.

Lap forty and Michael would pit, stopping for ten seconds. Michael would come back out in eighth position. By lap forty three Michael would be pressuring Trulli for seventh place. McLaren's David Coulthard would stop on lap forty four, for his second and last pitstop. Jaguar's Justin Wilson would retire on the same lap. Coulthard would come out right between Trulli and Michael.

Lap forty six and Ralf would pass Webber for fourth going into Turn one. Alonso was leading by 27.6sec. Lap forty nine and Frentzen stops his car with a mechanical problem. Alonso would stop, 7.7sec, returning to the track still in first. on lap fifty one Webber would pit, joined by Michael. The next lap and it would be the turn of Raikkonen and Juan Pablo, 7.2sec, to stop. For Coulthard he was fuelled to the finish.

Ralf SchumacherWith fifteen laps remaining the top eight was Alonso, Raikkonen, Montoya, Ralf,
Coulthard, Webber, Trulli and Michael Schumacher. by lap sixty Michael was still behind Trulli. Alonso was 23.8sec ahead of the second places McLaren. With Alonso holding a considerable margin over those following it looks like he started to ease off. Even with this he was still closing in on Michael to lap him, and on lap sixty two he does exactly that. A bad day for the Ferrari driver.

On Lap sixty three Juan Pablo would spin but he was able to get back on track just in front of Ralf. A very lucky escape for the WilliamsF1 driver. As the drivers covered the closing laps both Juan Pablo and Ralf were in third and fourth but with no chance of making up any places. They were separated by just one second, with Coulthard eighteen seconds further back. lap sixty six and Alonso's lead was 19.1 seconds.

With the championship rivals running in second, third, and eighth the points gap will be just two points between Raikkonen, Juan Pablo, and Michael Schumacher. But it would be Renault's Alonso who would complete the final lap to secure his maiden victory.
