Monza Test 02:09:2003 Day One of Four

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the end of the testing ban signalled the start of another period of intensive testing with the team commencing a test programme at Monza. Both Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher were present for the test.

For Juan Pablo he was to complete eighty eight laps of the Monza circuit, with his fastest lap of the day been a time of 1m:23.163. He would complete more than 500 kilometres over the course of the day.

Ralf SchumacherIn the morning both Juan Pablo and Ralf  would focus on the set-up of their cars. Juan Pablo would also conduct further tyre testing while Ralf continued to work on the set-up of his car. He was to also complete some practice starts.

Ralf was to have one moment, when his FW25 was to catch fire in the pit lane. The cause was an oil leak. Ralf was to stay in his car while it was repaired by the pit crew. Ralf would comment on the incident by saying: "It looked more serious than it actually was. The marshals came fast enough to extinguish the fire."

But for the WilliamsF1 team the days events would be overtaken when Ralf Schumacher was to have a major accident, minutes before testing was coming to an end, when he crashed heavily into the barriers after losing control of his car and somersaulting at the second Lesmo corner. Ralf was able to get out of his damaged car but would go to hospital for further checks.

WilliamsF1 Test team Manger Tim Newton was to comment on the accident by saying: "Ralf suffered an accident at the end of the afternoon session, when he spun off the circuit at one of the Lesmo corners, and is currently undergoing precautionary medical checks. The cause of the accident is not yet known but is under investigation."

Newton said the team was nevertheless able to run its programme for the day, despite a small fire on Schumacher's car in the morning session. "Our objectives involved set up preparation for the forthcoming race here as well as tyre testing for Michelin and some brake investigation work," Newton said.

Prior to his accident Ralf would complete sixty two laps, setting a best lap time of 1m:22.424. This was the third fastest lap time of the day.

With the BMW WilliamsF1 Team leading the Constructors championship and both drivers still in with a chance for the drivers title this test is crucial to the performance of the team at the Italian Grand Prix.
