Spanish GP Saturday 3rd Practice |

The opening Saturday practice for the Spanish Grand Prix would see an
improvement from both BMW WilliamsF1 drivers with Juan Pablo and Ralf
finishing the session in third and fourth. For Juan Pablo his time was a
significant improvement from his Friday time.
With
Jordan's Giorgio Pantano first out onto the track the Saturday practice
session would commence. He would be joined by team-mate Heidfeld and
Toyota's Da Matta. Both McLaren drivers, Coulthard and Raikkonen, were
out early trying to make up for the poor Friday. For this weekend the
MP4-19 has a new-spec engine and a new rear wing. As the session
continued both BAR drivers, Button and Sato, were out completing their
second laps. Minardi's Baumgartner would be the first driver to set a
flying lap time.
Jaguar's Christian Klien was also out early and like McLaren trying to
make up for his poor opening practice when he was to beached his R5 in
the gravel.
With half the session nearly completed Jordan's Nick Heidfeld would go
fastest in an EJ14 that has several aerodynamic upgrades. Just after
half of the session both Ferrari's were now on the track. Barrichello
would be the faster early on. The arrival of the Ferrari's would single
all the other drivers to take to the track.
Michael Schumacher would improve with a lap of 1m:16.519. This was a
second of yesterday's best time. With around twenty minutes left to run
WilliamsF1 driver Ralf Schumacher would now go fastest with a 1m:16.233.
The team seems to have found some pace with their FW26. Sato would split
the Ferrari's to go third, while Coulthard would move into fifth.
Renault's Jarno Trulli would set a brilliant second sector time of 30.2
seconds to move to the top of the times. But just as quickly Button
would beat his time. Fernando Alonso would make his first appearance but
on a quick lap would run wide and lose time on the grass. It is believed
that Renault ran with full fuel on Friday in preparation for the race.
Jaguar's Mark Webber would only manage an installation lap.
With the end of the session Jenson Button would lead the times but it
was very tight at the top with the top five drivers separated by just
over half a second. |
