The BMW WilliamsF1 drivers both struggled to set competitive times in second Friday Canadian practice session. Ralf would finish in fourteenth and Juan Pablo twentieth. Juan Pablo would only complete six laps after suffering what is believed to be a technical problem with his car.

Canadian GP Friday 2nd Practice

Things would improve very little for the BMW WilliamsF1 team after the second Friday practice in Canada. Ralf and Juan Pablo would be fourteenth and twentieth positions respectively. Juan Pablo would only complete six laps indicating that he had some technical problem. But even so Ralf completed eighteen laps and still could not even make it into the top ten.

Ralf SchumacherThe opening Friday practice at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit was one where the Ferrari team dominated proceedings. The second session would hopefully see whether or not the other teams can respond to the times been set by Michael and Rubens.

Ricardo Zonta would be the first out on the circuit. He would be joined by fourteen other drivers. Davidson would set a time of 1m:15.513 to go fastest, but this time should be passed. Fisichella would move into second with a 1m:15.804 with Alonso in third for Renault.

The Spaniard would spin in the Senna corner but was able to continue. Jenson Button would join Davidson at the top of the times with a time of 1m:15.710 to see him in second. Raikkonen and Coulthard were fifth and sixth. Ralf would set his first time, a 1m:16.183, to be fifth. Juan Pablo was down in eleventh with a time of 1m:16.564. But as in the first session the two Ferrari's would quickly move to the top of the times with Rubens leading Michael. Rubens time was 1m:15.152.

Michael would have a right front tyre go flat forcing him into his pit. He ran wide and clipped a wall just before the first chicane. His mechanics would check his cars suspension for any damage. Rubens would improve with a 1m:14.838.

BAR's Takuma Sato would move into third with a time of 1m:15.347, with team-mates Button and Davidson in fourth and fifth. Rubens would again improve his earlier time with a lap of 1m:14.705. Ralf and Juan Pablo were down in tenth and fourteenth after fifteen minutes of the session. In sixth was Sauber's Fisichella with the two Renault's of Alonso and Trulli in eighth and tenth. Juan Pablo would drop further down the times to seventeenth but the session was still in its early stages.

Due to financial problems Jordan's Pantano would not take part in the Friday practice. Rubens would pit after completing nine quick laps. Toyota's Ricardo Zonta would split the Ferrari's by moving into second with a time of 1m:15.213, half a second behind Rubens. Zonta would set a impressive top speed of 342kph. Juan Pablo was able to set a top speed of 336kph with Ralf 339kph. Ralf would move into seventh with a time of 1m:15.803. Jaguar's Mark Webber was now in eleventh.

With nearly thirty minutes of the session complete Michael would return to the track. He would move back into second with a time of 1m:14.856. Raikkonen would move ahead of Ralf into seventh with a time of 1m:15.696. Juan Pablo was yet to move from his seventeenth. Alonso would improve with a time of 1m:15.496 to be sixth. It appeared that BAR was been careful with their cars as Sato and Button would return to their garages after running a small number of
laps.

MontoyaBut it would go wrong for team-mate Davidson when he lost control of his car under braking at Turn six and slid into the tyre barrier backwards. This would bring out a yellow flag in the second sector. Michael would improve with a 1m:14.775, but was still .07 seconds behind Rubens. The top eight were Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Zonta, Button, Alonso, Davidson
and Kimi Raikkonen. Neither BMW WilliamsF1 driver was in this group. Button would move into third with a 1m:15.179 but he was quickly passed by Toyota's Christiano da Matta with a time of 1m:15.146. Toyota team-mate Panis was in tenth. Ralf and Juan Pablo were now down in twelfth and eighteenth.

Last position was occupied by Bijorn Wirdheim. Back at the front it would be BAR's Takuma Sato who would take the fight to the Ferrari's by going fastest with a time of 1m:14.086. McLaren's David Coulthard would move to near the top of times with fifth fastest, a lap of 1m:15.164. He would be joined by Alonso who was now second with a time of 1m:14.426. At this late stage of the session Juan Pablo had only completed six laps while Ralf had done eighteen. Ricardo Zonta would move into fifth position with a 1m:14.871.

Michael would pass Rubens to now be third with a time of 1m:14.663 but in somewhat of a surprise Raikkonen would take third position. Ralf and Juan Pablo were in a unimpressive fourteenth and twentieth positions as the session came to a close. The session did see the other teams challenge Ferraris. With Sato securing the fastest time Saturday's qualifying may produce a different result than that which one would have thought of after the opening Friday practice.
