United States GP Saturday Final Qualifying

The final qualifying session for the United States Grand Prix would see the BMW WilliamsF1 team have their drivers in fifth and sixth positions on the grid. Juan Pablo led team-mate Ralf by the closest of margins. How the team will fare come Sundays race is down to strategy.

Ralf SchumacherMinardi's Zolt Baumgartner would start the final qualifying session. His time of 1:14.812 would see him with provisional pole, if ever so briefly. Next came team-mate Gianmaria Bruni. He would be faster than his team-mate through all sectors to finish eight tenths up with a time of 1m:14.010.

Jordan's Nick Heidfeld would starts his final qualifying lap and he would set a time of 1m:13.147 to move to the top of the times. Team-mate Pantano was next out and he was close to his team-mates times finishing with a time of 1m:13.375 to be second. The final driver in the first group of five was Jaguar's Christian Klein. He would be fastest by half a second through the opening sector with a 22.1, quicker still in the second, and he would go fastest with a time of 1m:12.170. The next five men out were Webber, Raikkonen, Massa, Coulthard, and Fisichella.

Webber would start his lap and he would be fastest in the first two sectors to finish eight tenths up on Klein and fastest with a time of 1m:11.286. He would be 0.884 ahead of his team-mate. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen would be 0.03 behind Webber after the second sector finishing one tenth in front of the Jaguar to move to the top of the times. His time was a 1m:11.137.

FW26The first Sauber of Felipe Massa was out and he would be 1.4 seconds down after sector two. he would finish in fourth with a time of 1m:12.721, 1.5 seconds slower than Raikkonen. The second McLaren of David Coulthard was next and he was 0.098 down on Raikkonen after sector one. But he would lose a considerable amount of time in sector two to finish in third nine tenths behind Kimi. His time was a 1m:12.026. Fisichella would finish is qualifying in fifth with a time of 1m:12.470, to be just ahead of team-mate Massa.

The next group would be led out by Renault's Jarno Trulli. He would be joined by Michael Schumacher, Button, da Matta, and Alonso. Trulli's problems would start even before his lap when his mechanics had to push him out of the pits. He was to have what appeared to be gearbox problems and he would limp back to the pits having not set a time. Michael was next and he would quickly set a 21.4 for the first sector to be well ahead of Raikkonen. He was half a second up after sector two and would finish his lap with a time of 1m:10.400 to be 0.7 ahead of the McLaren driver.

Button was next and he was three tenths down after sector one. But he would close the gap and as he crossed the line his time would be a 1m:10.820 to move him into second.

Toyota's Da Matta was out on his lap and he would be 0.8 down after the second sector, finishing in fifth with a time of 1m:11.691. Alonso was the final driver of this group and he would be 0.4 behind Michael after sector two finishing in fourth with a time of 1m:11.185. This would see Michael still leading Button and Raikkonen in the top three positions. In the final group would be both Ralf and Juan Pablo, with Ralf the first out.

Ralf and Frank DernieRalf would start his lap and he would be four tenths down in sector one and he would lose another three tenths to finish his lap in third with a 1m:11.106. Takuma Sato's BAR was a similar margin down in sector one. But he would be fastest in the second by four tenths only to finish his lap in second position with a 1m:10.601 to be 0.201 behind Michael. Panis would be half a second down in sector one, picks back one tenth in the second, but would lose more time in the third to finish in a disappointing sixth.

The final two driver were Juan Pablo and Rubens Barrichello. Juan Pablo would be 0.4 down on Michael in sector one, one tenth up in sector two, and he would finish in fourth just ahead of Ralf. With Rubens left to run it looks like Juan Pablo and Ralf will qualify in fifth and sixth positions. Rubens would be slower than Michael in sector one but he would pick up time in sector two to finish his lap with a time of 1m:10.223 to take pole position.

So again we have an all Ferrari front row with the two BAR's on row two and the two WilliamsF1 cars on row three.
