Difficult start for WilliamsF1 at Magny-Cours
Montoya
By Andrew Hooper
July 3 2004
It would be a difficult start for WilliamsF1 at Magny-Cours for the French Grand Prix. As well as having to contend with the variable weather the team would also have to repair a damaged FW26. The team would finish the second practice session in 13th & 14th, with Montoya leading Gene.

The second Friday practice for the French Grand Prix would see Juan Pablo
and Marc would finish the session in
thirteenth and fourteenth positions.
It was only through the efforts of his mechanics that would see Juan
Pablo's FW26 repaired after his crash in the earlier Friday session.
With Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello setting a time of 1m:15.487 in the
earlier rain affected practice session, the second practice session
would get under way. The track was still damp with overcast conditions.
Jordan's Timo Glock that would be the first driver onto the circuit
joined by McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, who had not set a time in the
earlier session, and Jaguar's Mark Webber. Webber would set a time of
1m:31.079. Toyota's Ricardo Zonta would set the third fastest time with
a 1m:36.288. Glock would go fastest with a lap of 1m:30.287. Team-mate
Nick Heidfeld set a time
of 1m:34.098.
Jaguar's Bjorn Wirdheim sets a time of 1m:31.541 on his quick lap. Glock
would improve his time with a 1m:30.219. With the cars drying the track
times would start to drop. WilliamsF1's Marc Gene would take to the
track joined by BAR's Anthony Davidson. Gene would be half second
quicker in the first sector, a second faster in sector two, finishing
the lap with a time of 1m:28.368 to go fastest.
But BAR's Anthony Davidson would quickly beat Marc's time with a lap of
1m:27.873. He would improve on this time with a lap of 1m:25.644 to be
fastest by over two seconds. Gene would improve his time with a lap of
1m:27.699. Davidson would again improve his time with a lap of
1m:24.960. Toyota's Ricardo Zonta would move up into second with a
1m:25.089. Glock moves
into third with a 1m:26.877.
With Minardi's Leinders the only driver on the track Jaguar's Mark
Webber would come out. Webber would quickly move himself into the first
position with a very quick time, given the conditions, of 1m:20.525.
With the conditions improving Mark would improve his time with a
1m:19.307. But this was still a considerable margin away from
Barrichello's first session time.
Gene would respond to the times been set by Webber when he finishes his
lap with a time of 1m:18.085. A time of 1m:18.061 would see Mark back on
top, but his time would be passed by Toyota's Olivier Panis who would
set a time of 1m:18.022. As the times continued to fall Gene would go
fastest with a 1m:17.742.
Driving the McLaren MP4-19B Kimi Raikkonen would set a time of 1m:18.765
to be eleventh fastest. With nearly half the session run BAR's Jenson
Button would go fastest with a time of 1m:17.207. Raikkonen would better
Button's time with a lap of 1m:16.794. Kimi would improve with a time of
1m:16.786. But Alonso, Button, team-mate Coulthard, Michael Schumacher
and Jarno Trulli would all set better times than the Finn.
Trulli would go to the top of the times with a 1m:16.206, with Button
second, Michael third, with Alonso, Coulthard and Webber making the top
six. Raikkonen and Barrichello made up the top eight.
WilliamsF1 drivers
Gene and Montoya were in eleventh and thirteenth positions.
Juan Pablo had set a time of 1m:17.556. With the sky getting darker the
rain would start to fall again seeing the drivers return to the pits.
Jordan's Timo Glock was still out but was struggling, eventually
returning to his pit.
As the rain continued to fall and with only ten minutes left in the
session little was expected from the drivers. Despite this Marc Gene was
back in his FW26 looking ready to go out. Button was also in his car.
Gene would return to the track but would return after only one lap. He
had gone out on dry tyres only to find the conditions still too wet.
Davidson would also go out, joined by Zonta and Wirdheim. But in a great
piece of driving Toyota's Cristiano Da Matta would record the session's
fastest time. His time of 1m:15.518 would see him six tenths ahead of
second placed Trulli. Davidson was able to find time also to move into
third. Juan Pablo and Marc would finish the session in
thirteenth and fourteenth positions. |
