Day two of testing at Jerez and the BMW WilliamsF1 team was faced with even warmer conditions under which to conduct their test. The second day of testing would once again focus preparing the FW24 for the European Grand Prix, which will take place on July 23rd at the Nürburgring.

Part of this preparation was further testing of tyre compounds for Michelin. Fast lap-times were not a priority for Gené with the emphasis been on successfully conducting extended runs. These extended runs were part of an evaluation of engine reliability. Gene would finish the day in seventh place, with a best lap time of 1m:21.448.

Tim Newton, BMW WilliamsF1 Team Test team manager, explained: “This morning we ran tyre tests over both a short distance and on endurance runs. In the afternoon we undertook a scheduled engine change before completing a race run, 108 laps or just shy of 500 kilometres is a useful mileage to complete in a day.”

McLaren, Renault and Williams were all in action on Tuesday, with Toyota, Jaguar, Ferrari and BAR joining the testing today.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen would set the fastest time of the day with a lap time of 1m:19.236. Raikkonen's time was a new lap record for the circuit. Kimi would complete seventy five laps.

Mika Salo would end second with his Toyota, but already far more than a second off the pace. Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa, Renault's Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli completed the top five. Yesterday's pace setter Wurz was down in sixth. With the nature of the setup work that Alex was conducting he was not able to compete for the top time.

For Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa he was to try out new suspension parts which will be part of the new package set to be introduced at Silverstone.

Ferrari's test driver Luciano Burti worked with Bridgestone tyres and finished eighth, just ahead of the BAR drivers Davidson and Lemarie.

Juan Pablo Montoya is going to take over from Gené on Thursday.
