The opening qualifying for the British GP should hae been called the 'Who can be the slowest qualifying'. Drivers deliberatly went slow to make sure they run in the first groups in case it rains during the final qualifying at Silverstone.

British GP Saturday Pre Qualifying |
| |
| With the
threat of rain in the final qualifying session the pre-qualifying
session became one of who could go the slowest. It was like the
qualifying session where no one wanted to qualify.
Michael
Schumacher would be first out and he would set a time of 24.9 through
sector one, but his pace would drop off in sector two, and to everyone's
amazement would spin in the final sector. He would recover to set a time
of 1m:30.293. Next out was Renault's Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard would
set a time of 1m:21.923 to go fastest.
Rubens Barrichello up next and his lap would seem him suffer from
understeer in the second sector but would recover to end with a time of
1:24.817. Jarno Trulli would start his lap in the second Renault and
would be 0.3 down after sector one. He would lose further time in sector
two but was able to pull back time to end with a lap of 1:21.496 to beat
Rubens time. making up the first group would be BAR's Jenson Button. He would be the first driver to drop into the 1m:18 seconds with a time
of 1m:18.872. Now it was the turn of the first of the McLaren's. After
setting impressive times in the first two sector she would run wide in
the final sector losing four seconds to finish with a time of 1:23.521
to be fourth.
Now it was Raikkonen's turn. In a lap that would see him lose time in
the final sector he would finish with a time of 1m:21.639, good enough
for third but some 2.5 seconds slower than Button. Now for Juan Pablo.
After setting quick times in the opening sectors the last would again
see another driver lose time. He would finish with a 1m:23.386 to be 1.5
seconds off the pace. Mark Webber was next out in his Jaguar.
Like the drivers before him Webber would slow in the final sector. It
would appear that with a threat of rain drivers are trying to make sure
that they run early in the final qualifying session. Felipe Massa
finished his run to be just four tenths down on Button, to finish
second.
Gene would complete his run with a time of 1m:34.981 to finish in
sixteenth.
Jordan's Giorgio Pantano would move into fourth with a 1m:21.350.
Minardi's Bruni put his Minardi into ninth with a 1m:22.529. Team-mate
Zsolt Baumgartner would finish his lap in tenth putting the two
Minardi's in the top ten.
The final man out in this session was Takuma Sato. He would slow in the
final sector to finish in thirteenth. What a strange session with
drivers setting slow times to affect their position in the final
qualifying. |
