Jerez Test 14:06:2002 Final Day

The BMW WilliamsF1 team completed their four day test at the Jerez Circuit in Spain. Juan Pablo Montoya and test team driver Marc Gené spent the four days preparing for next weekends European Grand Prix. The team focused on race-specific mechanical and electronic set-up work, as well as ongoing tyre development work with Michelin.

Juan Pablo MontoyaAfter the fire that cut short Juan Pablo's first day of testing  his damaged car was repaired by his technicians, in time for testing today. Juan Pablo completed sixty three laps, with his fastest time been 1m:20.657 good enough for fifth fastest on the day.

Sam Michael, WilliamsF1 Chief Operations Engineer, had the following comments: "After a good start to the test on days one and two with Marc Gené driving, we had a few problems with reliability issues, particularly yesterday when we lost the whole day. However, we completed some useful work for Nürburgring relating to electronics and mechanical setup. Juan-Pablo took over driving duties for days three and four."

Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport Director, added: "The Jerez test was very productive from a BMW perspective. While the general focus was on suspension and tyre development, we have been working on further improvements of traction control system and engine mapping. Even though we lost some time on Thursday due to a fire which was caused by a leak in the fuel supply system, we have made good progress towards our targets.

We have also managed to identify the reasons for the engine problems we have suffered in Montreal. It is one disadvantage of the overseas races that equipment is returned a couple of days after the Grand Prix. On Wednesday we dismantled the engines and found out the following: Juan Pablo’s engine stopped in the race due to a broken valve. On Ralf's car, a problem with a piston appeared after he had crossed the finish line. It actually was not a failure of the piston itself but of the operating conditions."

But it would be the McLaren's David Coulthard who would set the fastest time on the final day of testing at Jerez. After the four days of testing it was the McLaren team who dominated proceedings in terms of outright fastest lap times. On the final day Coulthard was backed up by McLaren test driver Alex Wurz in second.

In third and fourth came the Renault and Ferrari test drivers, Alonso and Burti. Juan Pablo Montoya set the fifth fastest time. Toyota test driver Ryan Briscoe followed ahead of Eddie Irvine, Jarno Trulli and Patrick Lemarié in the BAR Honda.
