Hungarian GP Saturday Final Qualifying |
| |
| For the
BMW WilliamsF1 team the final qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand
Prix would produce a some what disappointing result that would see
Pizzonia and Juan Pablo in sixth and seventh positions. Pizzonia would
finish just ahead of the Colombian answering any concerns that were had
about his qualifying after his poor performance in Germany.
Both
drivers were over a second behind the pole time and Sundays race again
will end up with the team looking to score points rather than challenge
for a win.
The opening qualifying
session would see the Ferrari team the one to beat with Barrichello
leading team-mate Michael Schumacher. They were followed by the Sauber's
of Felipe Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella. But now it was down to the
final qualifying to make up the grid for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
First driver out would be Minardi's Zsolt Baumgartner. His lap would
finish with a time of 1m:24.329. Next was Gianmaria Bruni is up next in
the second Minardi. The Italian would finish with a time of 1m:24.679.
Jaguar's Christian Klein was next out and he would easily beat the times
set by the Minardi's to take provisional pole with a lap of 1m:21.118.
Team-mate Mark Webber was next out and the Australian would go faster
with a time of 1m:20.730.
For McLaren's David Coulthard his lap would see him lose time in the
final two sectors to finish with a time of 1m:20.897 to be behind
Webber. The next group of drivers were Giorgio Pantano, Oliver Panis,
Nick Heidfeld, Ricardo Zonta and Fernando Alonso.
The Jordan driver Pantano would start his lap and would set a
disappointing time of 1m:22.356, to behind Klein in fourth. For Olivier
Panis since Friday he has struggled and his lap would be no different
just beating Klein for third with a time of 1m:21.068. For Nick Heidfeld
his lap would see him ahead of Webber after sector one, but after sector
two he would drop to be eight tenths behind. He would finish his lap in
fifth just two tenths ahead of his team-mate. His time was a 1m:21.180.
Now it was Ricardo Zonta. Like Heidfeld he would be up on Webber after
sector one but lose time in the second. He would finish in fifth behind
team-mate Panis, with a lap of 1m:21.135. The 2003 race winner Alonso
was next and the Renault driver would set the fastest time sin the
opening two sectors to go fastest seven tenths ahead of Webber, a time
of 1m:19.996.
Raikkonen would start the next group of drivers. His lap would see him
set a time of 1m:20.570 to move into second behind Alonso. Pizzonia was
out on his lap and was fastest in sector one, finishing his lap just one
tenth behind the Renault to finish in second. Now it was Jarno Trulli's
turn. The Renault driver would be up on his team-mate in sector one, but
like so man others lose time in the final two sectors to move in third
with a time of 1m:20.411.
With
a few spots of rain now it was Jenson Button who would take to the
track. The BAR driver would see him pick up time in the final two
sectors to go fastest, a time of 1m:19.700. The second FW26 was next out
and Juan Pablo was ahead of Button's time in sector one but would lose
time over the rest of the lap to finish in fourth, behind team-mate
Pizzonia. Now it was down to the final group of drivers. The first was
Takuma Sato. The BAR driver would be three tenths up after sector one,
four tenths up after sector two, to finish his lap in provisional pole
with a time of 1m:19.693 and beat team-mate Button by seven thousands of
a second.
The Sauber pair was next
followed by the Ferrari's. First out was Fisichella. He would be seven
tenths down after sector two, and would finish his lap in sixth with a
time of 1m:20.324. Team-mate Massa was meant to be the next out but the
team has decided to start him from the back of the grid.
So now it was down to Michael Schumacher and Barrichello. Michael would
start his lap and he would be fastest in the first sector by two tenths
even with a small error in Turn one, three tenths up after sector two
and he would finish his lap with a time of 1m:19.146 to go fastest by
over half a second. Any hope that BAR had of retaining pole was simply
shattered. Now it was the turn of Rubens. He would be ahead of Michael
after sector one, a tenth down after sector two, and he would complete
his lap with a time of 1m:19.323 leaving Michael in pole position. The
Ferrari pair had again demoralised their opposition. |
