BMW may leave F1

The FIA recently announcing a set of measures aimed at reducing the speed of Formula One cars, including the introduction of a 2.4 litre V8 engine compared to the current 3 litre V10 engine.

This has seen a quick response from engine supplier BMW. Comments from BMW's Burkhard Goeschel in an article in the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper indicate that the company could leave Formula One if they end up been dissatisfied with the new regulations. This may see BMW return to other forms of motorsport to promote their brand name.

Goeschel said: "Racing is important for our image of sports cars makers, but if the regulations of the Grands Prix change in a penalising way, we may even decide to put our efforts on other categories."

"By going from 3,000cc V10s to 2,400cc V8s we would get very close to the performance of some road cars. As for saving money and improving safety, it would be better to research them elsewhere: the usage of carbon fibre, the aerodynamics, the tyres."
