Juan Pablo Montoya continued his impressive showing at Monza when he was
to set the fastest time in the pre-qualifying session. He was followed
by Antonio Pizzonia in a BMW WilliamsF1 one-two.
The
first qualifying session for the Italian would see McLaren's Kimi
Raikkonen out first and Jordan's Giorgio Pantano would be last.
Raikkonen was out on the track and with a quick final sector he would
cross the line with a time of 1m:20.501. Michael Schumacher would start
his lap after picking up time in the second sector would finish in
second with a time of 1m:20.528. Rubens Barrichello was next out and his
lap would only see him go third, a time of 1m:20.552. Sauber's Felipe
Massa was next in the order. He was a tenth up on Raikkonen through the
second with a 27.5, but in the final sector he would lose time and drop
to fourth with a time of 1m:20.571.
Massa's Sauber team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella was out and his lap would
see him lose time to Kimi. But his final sector would see him cross the
line with a time of 1m:20.357, the fastest time of the weekend.
For Jaguar's Christian Klien his lap would only be good enough for
sixth, a time of 1m:22.114. McLaren's David Coulthard would be fastest
in sector one, again in sector two, but would lose in the final sector
to finish in second with a time of 1m:20.414. Now it was the turn of
Toyota's Olivier Panis. His lap would see him finish eighth with a time
of 1m:22.169.
Renault's Jarno Trulli would be comfortably fastest through sector one,
drop three tenths in sector two, but he would lose a full half second
through the third to finish his lap with a 1m:21.011 to be seventh.
Ricardo Zonta was next in the second Toyota but his lap of 1m:21.829
would see him only in eighth. For Jordan's Nick Heidfeld his lap would
see him have problems and he would head back to his pit while Montoya
started his lap. Montoya was nearly half a second up through Sector two
with a 27.0.
Montoya would smash Fisichella's time, recording a 1m:19.525 to go
fastest. A brilliant lap from the WilliamsF1 driver. The second Williams
of Antonio Pizzonia was next and his lap would see him three tenths up
on his team-mate through Sector one, with a 25.7. But he would lose time
over the rest of his lap to set a time of 1m:19.671 to be second.
Now it was BAR's Jenson Button. His lap was good enough for third with a
time of 1m:19.856. It certainly looked like the Michelin supplied teams
have the advantage. Minardi's Zsolt Baumgartner was next and his time of
1m:25.082 would see him fourteenth. Way down the order was Renault's
Fernando Alonso. His lap would see him lose time in sector two and
finish with a time of 1m:20.341 to be fourth.
Now for Jaguar's Mark Webber. His lap was good enough for twelfth, a
time of 1m:21.783. He was to struggle for straight line speed. Now the
second BAR was out and Takuma Sato would see him finish with an
excellent third, a time of 1m:19.733. The second last driver was
Minardi's Gianmaria Bruni. He would finish in seventeenth. Now it was
Jordan's Giorgio Pantano, the final driver out, to take to the track.
His lap would see him in seventeenth with a time of 1m:23.264. |
