2nd Practice |

| The final Friday practice
session at the Shanghai International circuit would see the BMW
WilliamsF1 drivers finish in seventh and fourteenth positions with Ralf
leading Juan Pablo in the times. After their earlier encouraging times
they dropped down the order but the drivers were confident that there
was more time to be found in the car and there practice had given them a
good basis from which to work.
The
morning practice session would see BAR's fastest with a 1m:35.369. He
was followed by the BMW WilliamsF1 pair of Ralf Schumacher and Juan
Pablo Montoya. Early in the second session the Jaguar's of Webber and
Wirdheim would be first and second. Toyota's Ryan Briscoe would move
into second with a 1m:38.024. These drivers would be joined by the
majority of the field. With all this activity Toyota's Ricardo Zonta and
Renault's Fernando Alonso would move into first and second.
There would be a yellow flag
for BAR's Anthony Davidson who went off in the hairpin. He was able to
keep his engine running and the marshals were able to help him get out
of the gravel to return to his pit. Alonso would move into first with a
time of 1m:36.814.
It was later found that Michael Schumacher had an electrical problem in
the morning practice session that would see him lose a considerable
amount of track time. At the front the top three positions were now
occupied by Jenson Button, Juan Pablo, and Michael Schumacher. But
Rubens Barrichello would move into second with a 1m:36.157.
Ryan Briscoe was now in tenth with a 1m:37.219. Michael would move to
the top of the times but Felipe Massa would take the top spot with a
great time of 1m:35.508. For Takuma Sato his weekend would turn sour
when he was to suffer and engine failure that would see him lose ten
places on the grid as a result of the required engine change. Both
McLaren's would come out early in the second practice. Raikkonen would
be sixth with a time of 1m:36.274. While
team-mate Coulthard would be eighth with a 1m:36.517.
Mark Webber would go seventh but it would be Raikkonen who would go
fastest with a time of 1m:35.370, the quickest time so far. Toyota's
Oliver Panis would move into the top five with a 1m:36.093, while Alonso
was now third with a time of 1m:35.514. Rubens Barrichello would take
first with a 1m:35.045. Team-mate Michael Schumacher was in sixth. But
Briscoe would takes sixth with a 1m:35.728.
As the session progressed the times would start to fall with Jenson
Button becoming the first driver to ever break the 1:34 bracket with a
1m:34.787. Jacques Villeneuve was down in seventeenth position.
Raikkonen would be on a quick lap and he would finish with a 1m:34.648,
.139 seconds faster Button. Coulthard would move into the top five with
a 1m:35.291. As in previous races the McLaren drivers were limiting
their track time.
But
Button would respond and would go fastest by nearly half a second, with
a 1m:34.177. Rubens would go out on a quick lap but was not able to beat
Button finishing in second 0.271 seconds behind Button's time. Team-mate
Michael would move into fourth, but brother Ralf would take this spot
with a time of 1m:34.714. With ten minutes of the session remaining
Panis would move into sixth with a 1m:34.870. But he would be pushed
down one place by Zonta when his team-mate seta time of 1m:34.868.
Raikkonen would be about a tenth off Button with a lap of 1m:34.289.
Juan Pablo would spin at the long right hand first corner but was able
to return to the track. Fisichella was now in fourth with a time of
1m:34.680. As the final minutes of the session counted down Button would
improve his time with a 1m:34.174. Coulthard would move into third
putting McLaren second and third. But with all the cars out on the track
it would be Anthony Davidson who would return to the top of the times
with a stunning time of 1m:33.289.
So with the session coming to an end the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers would
finish in seventh and fourteenth positions with Ralf performing better
than team-mate Juan Pablo. |
