HANS mandatory for 2003

It has been announced by the FIA that the Head and Neck Support System (HANS) will be compulsory in Formula One next year.

At the meeting of the World Council in Paris it was decided to make this decision . There had been some reluctance, on the part of drivers, to use the system due to comfort and movement problems. But changes have been made to eliminate these problems making it possible for the FIA to allow their use.

Drivers will have to wear it during time in the cockpit from January 1, 2003. Formula One will follow the lead of the US based CART series where their drivers have been using the HANS system for some time.
